Moments in Time  by Larner 20 Review(s)

*LOL*
That was fun! It's fascinating what Bodkin's little chapter (Reflections 71) triggered off!
To be honest, on the one hand I feel quite protective of Aragorn and the twins and want to warn them, but on the other hand it is much more fun this way. And Aragorn is right, it is worth an injured finger to see Frodo laugh so! And I fear even *I* could handle a hammer a bit besser as our beloved King *grins*

It was the perfect compensation for the last chapter here - I've only now realized that I had forgotten to review it. This was so sad, to see Frodo do something like this, to see his own part in the quest as complete failure, and I was glad the others reversed it. In comparison this new chapter was very comforting.

I wonder now if I should still trust my dictionary :-D

Author Reply: Depression is such an insidious disease, and can destroy us while we still live. But I can see Frodo overreacting like this, shocked at Lotho and Timono being struck from the Bracegirdle book and thinking of himself as being even more of a traitor and doing the same to himself in a fit of pain.

This one was fun to write. Once I'd read the first chapter of Discretion my mind started churning out possible phrases they might have been taught by the Dwarves, and when I started actually reading Bodkin's own translations, the old "Kick Me" sign just came to mind and I had to write that one in somehow. Add in the Hammer story and the idea that Bilbo might have been similarly treated by Fili and Kili and corrected by Balin, then have shared that knowledge with Frodo--and there was the story, just waiting to be put together. And now and then Frodo just deserved to laugh in spite of himself!

Thanks for the double review here.

Oh, and thank you for mentioning my little on-going hammer tale. I loved that you mentioned Pippin's lessons in the story. Sorry to leave this review in two parts but I pushed the wrong key and the wrong time and the other review was gone before I could finish. LOL Is it any wonder that I have trouble formatting? I can't even review properly. Excellent story!

Author Reply: I'm a lousy typist, and go through my stories repeatedly before posting them--and STILL find typos!

I have tried to include allusions to many of the stories that I've incorporated into my vision of ME and the Shire into my stories, and yours and Bodkin's were just asking to be expanded on WAY down the line somewhere. It was a pleasure to work the two ideas together into one story.

Not that was funny! I loved every word. I can just imagine how much Aragorn would need to sneak out from time to time. I love that Pippin and the others made bets on when he would do it.

Author Reply: Yes--when there is no football to wager on, what kinds of betting pools might have been set up?

"Let me see, Imrahil, we have you down for a week from Thursday; I give him three days tops, Pippin has given him a week and Eomer has him for a week and a day. Come on Legolas, are you in or out?"

Oh I just loved this from start to finish Larner and the cross-fertilization of ideas between you authors is great. I would end up quoting the lot if I started to try and pick my favourite bits!

Author Reply: Yes, we do start setting one another off, don't we? Now when do I get to read YOUR story?

So glad you enjoyed it, as it was fun to write.

BodkinReviewed Chapter: 3 on 9/14/2005
Oh, very funny. Of course Bilbo would have been exposed to dwarven humour - he's one of the few non-dwarves we know spent a lot of time with them - and of course he would have warned Frodo of the dangers of taking them at their word when they offered to teach him a few phrases.

And Aragorn would probably accept the information quite gracefully at the moment - in the sheer delight of hearing Frodo laughing his head off.

What a delightful twist on the Khuzdul cussing gag. Which seems able to run and run! Every time it seems to have reached the end it takes a turn and brings out another delight.

And combining it with Frodo's - er - practical carpentry skills (thanks GW) is a wonderful idea.

Great story.

Author Reply: Except that I left Aragorn still in ignorance of what he'd actually said, you certainly have it reasoned as I did. I know that Bilbo and Balin appear to have become closest of the group, and figured that Balin would have been most likely to have corrected Bilbo if he was using a phrase improperly or was being used as a patsy in this way.

And I wanted to give Frodo a moment of pure, wicked pleasure at the King's expense here.

I warned you my mind was going into hyperdrive figuring out phrases that the Dwarvish might have translated to, didn't I? So I didn't go with the nursery phrases as I'd first envisioned, but with another more in keeping with wishing to become a lapdog or kneel naked to perform duties as a footstool--although I think the one in which they begged permission to lick the Dwarf King's armpits has to be the best of the bunch!

Thank you for putting my poor brain into a churning madness figuring out more such phrases!

I just had to review. I really enjoy your stories and find myself checking if you posted something nightly. Your stories always have a calming and happy or contented aura to them. Thank you so much and keep up the wonderful work.

Larner:

Yes, please do leave the story titles at the top! I just found out about "If I Had a Hammer" from reading the other reviews. Now I'll go check it out!

G.A.

Author Reply: Have changed that now, Apprentice. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Hi Larner

I haven't laughed so loud in rather a long while. It makes a delightful complement to Bodkin's series. Why don't you include a reference to send other readers that way?

Thanks so much for all your kind comments on my drabbles and such!

Gandalfs apprentice

Author Reply: That was why I referenced both Bodkin and Grey Wonderer. Had to work If I Had a Hammer as well as Discretions and Reflections into this one somehow. Do you think I ought to have written the titles of the stories in my reference?

Anyway, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I've been outlining in my head driving to work and back all weekend.

This was an absolute gem,I just loved it was great to see a difeent side of Aragorn and learn there is something even he can't do !
I also enjoyed a chance for Aragorn and Frodo to be together.

Author Reply: Glad you liked it. Try Grey Wonderer's "If I Had a Hammer" and Bodkin's "Discretion" to find the inspiration.

What a delightful scene between King and hobbits! I love their easy familiarity with one another, and the fact that Pippin simply wouldn't let his King slip away alone, into who-knows-what mischief.

Looking quickly to Lord Frodo, he realized that the slender Hobbit was not trying to deal with distress so much as struggling mightily not to laugh out loud, and that his eyes, which were too often sad and distant, were full of a mighty delight and humor.

Wonderful!

Author Reply: Glad you like it. I love to think that now and then something happened in Minas Tirith to get Frodo laughing, and that all were mightily glad of it. And after reading Bodkin's and the Grey Wonderer's latest efforts this one was just waiting to be told--the inexperienced trying to put together a simple bench....

You ought to read the chapter on archery practice and Shire cooking in my new story--I think that you will appreciate what Pippin and Isumbard come up with for dinner.
