How nice that the picture put a smile in Sam's heart just when it was needed. I enjoy reading loving glimpses of Sam and his family life at Bag End. Thanks.

Author Reply: Yes, the picture has been passed on, and comfort is found when it is truly needed.

And I love to think of Sam finding the happiness in Bag End Frodo intended for him. So glad you liked it, Cookiefleck.

That piece of comfort came for Sam at just the right moment. It does seem to be that kindness is repaid with kindness and care with care.

Author Reply: Yes, the first Yule without Frodo's presence must have been a bit difficult, or so I'd think; and that the Creator would nudge others to see to it that both Merry and Sam were comforted just seemed right to me.

And when the kindness and caring can't fully be returned, to see it passed on to others to their needs is the greatest sign of thanksgiving we can give, or so I think.

Thanks to you for your note, Bodkin.

Aw this is lovely Larner. I read and was moved by Dreamflower's tale last night when I got back from my Parents. To find it's conclusion by you this morning is a wonderful treat. I love the way that Authors are inspiring each other and sharing the gifts of their characters and story-lines with each other. More gifts going round!

It hadn’t been able to totally take him till the very last, and even then Gollum had taken It so quick It hadn’t been able to make certain of Its victory, praise to the Powers and Creator for the mercy of it. /

I hadn't really thought about this. The idea that Sauron would have had complete victory over Frodo if Gollum hadn't stolen the Ring back so quickly is frightening and depressing. Just what would have become of Frodo if Gollum had taken longer to wrest it away or if he hadn't been there at all? It doesn't really bear thinking about. Another thing to be thankful to Gollum (and the Creator ) for! A small parallel with the Morgul Blade in a way. It was removed in time to save Frodo from becoming a wraith but not soon enough to prevent him suffering on-going effects. Links between Elrond and Gollum? Surely not! Working for Good or Evil from a little distance? I'm rambling again, sorry!

Good News from Home! Mum's pressure sore has healed enough to begin to think about getting up again for short periods. So no Christmas around the hospital bed this year thank the Lord! But this then means that Dad will have to hoist her alone two or three times a day! Not good but getting carers for this would be impossible. Jet is suffering from the very wet and muddy weather. A bundle of energy with little outlet. Did you get my e.mail or, with all your computer problems is it floating somewhere in the ether? Anyway, Happy Christmas to you and Yours.

Author Reply: Now and then I have to add to someone else's story line, and that one of Dreamflower's was just begging to be followed up upon. So glad it gave delight to so many. And in it the gifts do continue to be shared further.

Gollum may not have shared the blessings of Elrond; but I think that as the Creator used Aragorn, Sam, Bill, and at last Elrond to aid in bringing Frodo where he needed to be in time and removing the shard, so He sent Gollum as a far more rough but as effective surgeon this time to relieve Frodo of the Ring before it could destroy him forever. As for what Frodo might have become--Tolkien's own imaginings that the Ring would lead Frodo to think he could command the Nazgul and would end up being taken by them to Sauron himself is itself more horrible than I wish to imagine.

So glad to hear about your mother's improved health, and will be sending your father good vibes as well as offering prayers for both of them. As for Jet--I can understand the poor beasty's frustration.

Have a windstorm working its way through, and hope we don't lose power lines again. It happens so often....

BTW, the note you sent appears to have gone to the old email address. Send it to the same at @hughes.net instead of @direcway.com, and I should get it. Direcway has been subsumed by Hughes now.

What a lovely Yule story, Larner. Frodo's legacy burns brightly in the hearts of all who remember him.

Author Reply: I had to answer the story Dreamflower wrote...it called to me. And you're right--Frodo's legacy remains.

Aww...Larner, I am *so* touched! That my little story inspired this one of yours! How lovely to know that Dahlia's gift had been treasured all those years, and that it eventually came to brighten up Sam's Yule! That was just beautiful!

Thank you! *sniff*

Author Reply: You're welcome, Dreamflower. And I found I didn't need to borrow Dahlia myself--just her daughter managed to walk up the steps to Bag End and introduce herself and tell more of the story. So glad I made your day. Now, will I have the laptop back again as of tonight, or will I have to rewrite what I had done on there? The wondering keeps going on.
