This whole story is so wonderful and plausible that I feel I'm reading all the bits the Professor left out. I've been meaning to review more often but RL keeps getting in the way at the moment.

Love our wonderful resiliant hobbits, irrepressible Pippin and caring Aragorn, and Boromir is so believeable. The ring is so subtle in the way it has hooked him, but I love his protective feelings towards Frodo as well as the other hobbits. I never felt much pity for book Boromir but Sean Bean made him so human and real that I feel more grief at his death than I used to.

I really enjoyed the exchange between Legolas and Gimli. Their friendship is already growing.

I SO love your presentation of hobbits and how they affect those around them.
Pippin truly is growing up here, and you show us these things so beautifully and naturally.

Plus, I am always a sucker for those who appreciate Frodo's innate goodness and understand the toll being taken on him.

Hope - it's what hobbits bring!

That was perfect, Shirebound!

"Perhaps you had better take a few hobbits home with you." That's a very good advice. I'd love take some hobbits with me :) ... and show them the way to my company to start an invasion, that would be funny!

Little Pippin is growing real fast into adulthood. To share his lembas with the others, who would have thought of that! But, no matter how old a hobbit is, they will always detest willow bark tea. That stuff must be awful!

What a sweet chapter!

The Elf said nothing for a few moments. "I have never seen or heard of anyone enduring so much. The evil of the Ruling Ring must tear at his very soul, yet he refuses to listen. I would not even jest about the destiny of such a one." He looked toward Frodo, lying asleep as close to Pippin as he could get. "He shines, sometimes, Gimli. On occasion I see a clear light that..." He shook his head, unable to explain it. "I have seen the way Samwise looks at him; I believe he sees it as well. We have been greatly honored to be in this Company."

I love the way Legolas, too, has seen Frodo's light...

Then Gimli's eyes twinkled.

"Perhaps the Black Lands will seem less dark when hobbits have invaded it!"

Legolas laughed and clapped Gimli on the back. "Indeed, that would be a sight worth all our troubles."

Why does this remind me of a certain invasion of the fluffies? *wink*

"He's growing up, Merry."

"I know. I wonder if his family will even recognize him. It might be difficult for Pip, when we get back... get back to..." Merry stopped, his smile fading. "Strider," he said quietly, "do you think we'll ever get back home? Is there any hope?"

Aragorn put the packets down and folded Merry in his arms. "There is always hope," he said just as quietly, “although we are attempting something very difficult. I don't know how, but Gandalf seems to have chosen the four finest hobbits in the Shire for this quest." He knelt down and looked into Merry's eyes. "You've been very brave; you never let Pippin know that you have any doubts or fears. I'm sure it hasn't been easy for you."

Merry gazed at him solemnly. "It's what you're doing for Frodo."

"Yes it is," the Ranger agreed. "Let's keep being brave for awhile longer, all right?"

What a sweet moment between Merry and Aragorn. There just aren't enough of those around!

Thank you so much for this lovely chapter.

Too quiet."

"I see," Legolas smiled. They were checking the boats for any damage. "No hobbits talking, pestering, eating, stirring things up, running about..."

"That is exactly what I said. Unnatural."

I could quote the whole chapter Shirebound but I had better not. I love the mutual appreciation society going on between them all. All earned of course.
And Merry trying to get a full piece of lembas made me crack up! I'll bet that Frodo and Sam won't see Lembas as a treat by the end of the quest!

A delightful chapter! I like the conversations between Legolas and Gimli, and Aragorn and Merry (it's so rare for those two to have any interaction!). Your Pippin is so sweet and unselfish, I loved the bit with him sharing the lembas, it's just the sort of thing such a good-hearted hobbit like him would do! *hugs Pippin and you*

I love the little scene with Legolas and Gimli at the beginning. Their newfound friendship seems to have given them both a reason to hope for a future, which I'm sure they sorely need right about now.

And good ol' Pippin. One effect of a long, dangerous journey is that he's learned both how to conserve food and how to share it. What a change for someone from such an abundant land as the Shire.

Absolutely wonderful, Janet. You have such a gentle way to portray them - the gruffiness of Gimli, the elvish foresight of Legolas (and you are one of the rare authors who give him a delightful, gentle humor!) and of course the hobbits and your very special Aragorn. I love this story, very much.
