The River  by Indigo Bunting 17 Review(s)
LarnerReviewed Chapter: 3 on 10/21/2005
The need to rest so as to be ABLE to do something in the morning seems cold yet was so necessary; and to find the relics of their friends' passage but not themselves is heartbreaking. Not that either Legolas or Sam was in much condition to retain pack or bow intact.

Superbly written.

Author Reply: Yes, exactly, Larner! The Fellowship didn’t have much choice but to sit tight and wait for morning, difficult as it was. They didn’t want to do it any more than Sam or Legolas wanted to lose their prized possessions. And thank you very much for your kind compliments. You seem like a person with a pleasant sort of disposition.

Sensible conclusions about the bow and the pack but, oh how hard not to give up hope. But we know they got out of the water so how hard can it be to find a soggy elf? *g*!

Author Reply: Breaking the bow was a hard decision to make, even though it was a perfectly logical thing to do. I thought it very unlikely that it would have survived the trip, being made of wood and protruding from Legolas’ body as it surely did. The hard part of it was the simple fact that the bow is now ruined. Sam’s pots are intact, so having him lose it was more a wrench to him than to me. With regards to the soggy Elf and hobbit, the question now is: how far downstream did they travel before escaping the river? That will definitely affect how long it takes for them to be found.

Wow.

I am enjoying this story more than any I've read in a long time. Well written, very visual with clearly-drawn characters, and suspenseful as well. Thank you for posting so swiftly, as this is a story that makes it hard to wait for updates.

Eagerly awaiting the next chapter!

Sayre.

Author Reply: Thank you very much, Sayre. There are a lot of good stories out there, so if you’re enjoying the story as much as you say you are, then I’m extremely flattered. I’m doing my best to post quickly. There are eight chapters fully written at the present time, and I’m working on the ninth. I plan to post a new chapter every other day until I run out. Then I’ll have to slow down, of course, but nine chapters is more than halfway.

Well, you have me hopelessly hooked now. I think you have captured the characters very well and I am very anxious to see how Sam and Legolas will manage to survive the night. Good story! ~TF

Author Reply: Thank you so much for your comments on the characterization, Tithen! It’s good to know that you think the characters are realistic and true to their “Tolkien” selves. In fact, I think that “good characterization” is one of the highest compliments that can be paid. More on Sam and Legolas in the next chapter.

I love this fic ,(is it on fanfiction.net?) I was reading it and had a feeling of deja vu. Please update.

Author Reply: Thanks, SilentEagle, and welcome! I’m glad you’re liking the story so far. Yes, I’ve been posting it on ff.net, too.

That must have been just the hardest night - to cook and eat and sleep, knowing that Sam and Legolas had been battered by the river and could be freezing to death downstream. I don't know how they could!

And then to find Sam's pack - and Legolas's bow! Two things that speak of their bearers.

I hope they find them soon. Even Legolas's elven endurance must be at its end.

Author Reply: Yes, that was meant to be a hard night. There wasn’t much else they could do; Sam and Legolas were traveling much faster in the water than the Fellowship could go on foot, and the day was ending. What’s more, Gandalf was right – Frodo is more important than anyone else, and he had to be warmed and dried. So they were forced to sit and eat their hot food and feel useless.

Just keep searching! You'll find them! (Too bad Legolas and Sam don't have Boromir's horn with them.)

Author Reply: Hmm. Yes, that horn would have come in handy, wouldn’t it? Maybe it’s a good thing I didn’t send Boromir down the river with Sam; then the story might have been over too soon. :-) The sad thing about the search is that what remains of the Fellowship can really only look so long. Despite the fact that they want to look, they have to be practical. Gandalf is the one who – lucky him – is the voice of pragmatism for the Fellowship. It's not an enviable job.
