Forging of the Ringbearer: Part 1: A New Life  by Frodo Baggins 46 Review(s)
Queen GaladrielReviewed Chapter: 3 on 7/21/2006
Made it over for a bit this morning. I love this! I love this! Byut that is an EVIL CLIFF-HANGER, Frodo Baggins! How could you? More please! Plllleeeeeeeeease! You make Hobbiton seem so very real. Oh, but our poor dear! Yes, indeed tbat healer had better get there on the double, or s/he'll have more to reckon with than Bilbo! Now, in case no one eles has...

Then: First I washed the dishes, then I went to the market.

Than: I bought a great load of vegetables, but Mrs. Smith bought more than I did.

Just some examples, hope that helps. Off to read "Healer" now! Hoooray!
God bless, ammelda nilde!

Author Reply: Oh...oh you don't know how, well, surprised I am to get a review from *you* of all people! I can't believe it! I'm so happy that you could read this. I know, Ellie already told me the cliff hanger was evil, but I'll get around to it when I can. *elusive smile* THanks for the then/than tips. It was late, my brain was dead, and well...yeah. Hannon le! See you in two weeks!!!! Namarie!

THEN

Then has a variety of meanings and is used primarily as an adverb but can also be used as a noun. An adverb is a word used to alter the meaning of another word or phrase (either a verb, adjective, adverb or prepositional phrase) and there are a variety of ways then can be used as an adverb.

1. to indicate a certain time (The parties were wild back then.)
2. next in order; soon afterward (I drank the whole bottle, then didn’t feel very well. The order of the first four planets is Mercury, Venus, Earth then Mars.)
3. in addition to (My dislocated shoulder was really hurting, then the pain doubled when the doctor yanked it back into place.)
4. in that case (If the phone rings then answer it.)
5. on the other hand (She has nice features, but then, she is only a line drawing)
6. As a noun, then has only limited use. Primarily it’s used to refer to a specific time. (Before then, there’s no point trying.)

THAN

Than is primarily used as a conjunction and sometimes as a preposition. As a conjunction it is typically used together with an adjective as a way of comparing two things. e.g. I am taller than you are. The mood in here is much different than the mood outside.

Somewhat confusingly than can also be used (as a conjunction) in much the same situation as then might be used to indicate a point in time, with the resultant meaning of the sentence being different in a subtle way. Consider the following two sentences.

I had scarcely taken my first sip than the wine went to my head.
I had just taken my first sip, then the wine went to my head.
The first of the sentences uses than in a very specific way which (as far as I know) always involves one of the words scarcely or hardly. To make the second sentence a little bit nicer I have also changed scarcely to just but that need not have been done. The second sentence uses then as in definition/example two above.

As well as being used as a conjunction, than can be used as a preposition. Although its usage as a preposition is wide spread, especially in speech, many hard core grammartarians still regard the use of than this way as incorrect.

Hope this helps.

Author Reply: Wow. Thank you very much. That really helps. If you don't mind my asking, are you a teacher? :) That was a very thorough answer question. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I love grammar, but sometimes English can be so very confusing! Namarie!

Ooooh that Lotho!!!! *growls* Good chapter, hope Frodo gets better soon! "Then" is used when talking about time, as in "Then Frodo did such and such" whereas than is used in sentances like a comparison, as in "Frodo is different than most hobbits" Does that help any? Please update soon, I don't think I can wait much longer to see if Frodo is all right!
God bless,
Ellie

Author Reply: Oh, hannon le! I know, I can't stand Loatho either. Ah, you'll just have to wait to see if Frodo gets better. And thank you so much for the help. Actually, I was laying in bed waiting for my mom to get off the computer and I was thinking about it. I figured it out. But you confirmed my thoughts. Thanks. Namarie!

I'm glad Sundays are exempt from Lenten sacrifices as I have been looking forward for days to be among my hobbits again! :)

This is continuing to be a great story. My favorite line: Somehow, the two seemed to belong to one another. Lovely and loving, my dear!

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

This was great, Frodo! I LOVE your Little Sam. He's so sweet and caring! The start of such a beautiful friendship! I can't wait for the next chapter!
God bless, Elanor :)

Author Reply: Oh thank you, Ellie! I imagine Sam would have been such a sweet little child! I can't wait to post the next chapter, but you may just have to wait a while!! Sorry!

This is a nice little vignette, and I do hope that you expand on some of the possibilities here. There are some lovely touches that add depth to the scene -- Bilbo fiddling with something in his pocket, the Gaffer reminding Sam of the social difference between him and Frodo. I do hope to see that relationship develop over time. It's good to see Frodo so optimistic about his new life at Bag End.

Author Reply: Hannon le! It is hard to optimistic, especially about moving, but sometimes one just needs a change. Thanks for the encouragement!

Awww! This is such a sweet chapter! And I see our meeting between Sam and Frodo doesn't differ much-except this one happened three years later than mine. :) (Speaking of, you have "I just turned six." Should be "I just turned nine.") Aging systems can complicate things, can't they? :) i'm constantly getting figures mixed up. And I loved Bilbo's remark about Bag End needing someone with so much spirit and liveliness! Yes, that's what both he and Bag End wanted. He's such a wonderful uncle! :) I have a feeling something is going to happen when they go into hobbiton. I hope it isn't a meeting with those dreadful S.B.s...
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Hannon le, my faithful reviewer!! :) Yes, to be frank, the meeting was pulling from several different stories that I really liked. I know, it wasn't my best, but I was tired and half brain dead. Thanks for correcting that slip of the pen...or fingers. :) Very perceptive, mell min. Something is going to happen. I hadn't thought of a run in with S.B.'s though. I can arrange something, however. *wicked grin*

Despite the aura of sadness that hangs over this, I found it very sweet. It's lovely to see how naturally Saradoc and Esme fall into taking care of Frodo, and Bilbo seems very much in character -- genial and loving, he clearly would like to adopt Frodo now, but he's waiting until it's a more appropriate time to do that.

Author Reply: Yes, there is an aura of sadness. But how can a young lad losing his parents not be sad? How can anybody dying not be sad? But worry not, mellon nin, though this story has some rough roads ahead, there are sweet and happy moments as well. Thank you for your encouraging words on how the characters are all in character. I try to stay book cannon, though sometimes I am apt to stray. :)

Nice beginning. I love Primula's last crow, "We're parents!" I shall read further.

Author Reply: Hannon le, French Pony. I thought I had answered this ages ago...don't know where my brain got to. So sorry! Do you mind my asking, where did you get your name? I love it! :) Namarie!
