Lovely! Lovely! Lovely! I was about to give up on some new fic to read with my lunch, when this popped up! Lin, your timing is impeccable! Poor Merry! The more he tries to keep things from Frodo, the worse it gets! I do hope bedtime intervenes soon, or they *will* have to break their agreement about telling of their Orc captivity! I love the way that Pippin cuts straight to the point. Frodo would have done much better telling Merry to hush... And Sam is *very* observant, isn't he? Author Reply: Sam is *very* observant, and when he's had a little wine he tends to blurt. At least, there's a precedent, when Faramir was interviewing Frodo...

‘The Riders of Rohan attacked,’ Frodo repeated, seizing the strand and pulling with all his might, in the interest of untangling the tale. Pippin decided to go straight to the point. ‘Frodo only got up for the first time today,’ he said, turning his head to crane up at Gandalf. ‘Oughtn’t he to be going to bed, soon?’ Poor Frodo, trying to make sense of this garbled story! :D Author Reply: Poor Frodo. Perhaps he ought to have hunted up the minstrel and got the story from *him*. Author Reply: Poor Frodo. Perhaps he ought to have hunted up the minstrel and got the story from *him*.

I am glad that I know the story well Lindelea or I'd be getting more confused than Frodo. This is brilliant. and the reactions are absolutely great. Author Reply: Thanks! Had some extra writing time today and finished this. Whew!

Oh this was wonderful! I can't wait to see what Frodo's reaction will be. The characters are very well done and very book cannon. I love to think of how poor Frodo would take the news of his cousins'....hm, how do we say, misadventures? I bet he would feel horrid for even allowing them to come along. Goodness, though, you sound like me! Ideas springing to life in the most absurd of places! A doctor's office waiting room. Yes, and the car, moving truck, sibling attacks...the works. Hannon le for a wonderful story. God Bless! YOurs Truly, Frodo Baggins Author Reply: Goodness gracious! I never saw this review, I think, until now--for there is no "reply" here, and I don't remember reading it before. So very belated thanks for stopping by and leaving a note.

This chapter is so funny, as Merry and Pippin are trying so hard to still keep Frodo in the dark--their attempts at distraction in the face of his Baggins persistence are like the little boy with his finger in the dyke--doomed to failure. ‘Why, no!’ Pippin said, in perfect honesty, all wide-eyed innocence. But Merry sighed, for Frodo knew that look as well as he knew the fur on the top of his feet. Yep. Frodo knows, and the jig is up, even before Pippin starts to spoil it all by nearly passing out. But in spite of his pain and general wooziness, he continues to try--with his diversion about the Ents very nearly working. But Frodo's not buying it. Gandalf knows, and it is *he* who has decided to "out" the Conspiracy: ‘Drink that now,’ Gandalf said with a nod to Frodo. ‘Your cousins ought to have known they couldn’t keep all their absurd exploits and ridiculous feats from you.’ Frodo thought back to his awakening at Rivendell, and Gandalf’s use of “absurd” at the time. ‘They’ve been doing all sorts of heroic things, I’d imagine,’ he said. And then, so funny at the end, where Pippin just assumes he's going to be the one to tell--only to have Frodo pin poor Merry down! I really look forward to his rendition! Author Reply: Poor Merry. I'm afraid his rendition is not going at all well. Gandalf should have got them all roaring drunk, to begin with, and then perhaps it would have gone a bit smoother. Or something.

Well - they seem to have got past his ostrich phase of wanting nothing bad to have happened and Frodo is now willing to listen. I don't think he'll much like what he hears, though, so I hope he manages to keep quiet as a difficult tale is told. I love Gimli's muttering. The dwarf is a star. Author Reply: Well, they're doing their best to muddle the tale. Seems to me they should have got the minstrel to tell it. Much easier that way.

Oh this is just great Lindelea. The more they try to spare him the more worried poor Frodo is going to get. Out with it lads and do try to be coherent for the sake of the notes that Frodo is going to have to make for Bilbo! I am quite surprised that Gandalf hasn't stepped in more yet. But maybe he is enjoying the confusion! It seems strange to laugh but the bottom line is that all four of them are together again and, mostly, fairly hale and, sort of, whole! Author Reply: Well, it seems that Gandalf made something of a rash promise to Merry and Pippin. It really is better to tell the truth, don't you think? I mean, tell the truth and be ready for the consequences, even if they think it might make Frodo faint or something. After all, they can catch him, and fan him, and ply him with wine. But he's proved to be made of sterner stuff than that, so I really don't know what all the fuss is about. Sometimes the anticipation is so much bigger than the actual problem.

Oh, yay! Updated again! This scene continuation is great--if Pippin collapsing did't give everything away, I don't know what would. And I'm glad it sounds like they've stopped dissembling and Merry's ready to launch into the tale--Frodo was about to pop from trying to figure everything out with just their dark little hints to work on. The question is now...is Merry strong enough to tell it? I know that Pippin's physically unSTEADY ;-) right now, but I think Merry's lack of sleep and prolonged worry makes him more emotionally unsteady. Yikes! Can't wait to see how this plays out. Author Reply: Updated again, and little more than a month later. *hugs*

Yes, the first of the tale ought indeed come from Merry at this point. Well, well done, Lindelea. Author Reply: Thanks! Yes, considering that Merry was unconscious for the first part of the captivity with Orcs, he'd be the logical one to avoid the issue... *g*

And he learns at last that his cousins went through their own baptism by fire and the sword before he was fully across the lake above Rauros. Lovely characterization of Frodo--exactly right! Author Reply: O thank you! I'm always worried about doing the characters justice, so it's nice to have a reassurance from one who writes him so well. ...and you have started a new story! I just saw it, and littlest is still asleep (she's slept, on and off, for most of the day and I even got a two-hour nap myself--so much for school today, but as we school year-round we can take a day off here or there and I was a wreck trying to correct their maths this afternoon, I can tell you!) - anyhow, if she doesn't waken in the next few minutes I'm going to sneak a peek! Nice news that you might be coming down. Perhaps if the weather is like today we can have a picnic tea. Would that suit? Author Reply: oops, I just heard a waking-up groan from the bedroom, so it'll have to be the next time I'm online, if I time it right.
