"Third Age Alliances of Men and Elves?" That must be a very thin book. . . .

Good ol' Daeron and Legolas. All the stories they could tell that would begin with "It seemed like a good idea at the time." I'm sure their parents probably wished they'd just let the kids have a puppy to begin with. But they were very responsible. They knew what the spider liked to eat, they fed it regularly, they poked air holes in its box -- presumably, they cleaned the box if it needed it. They just weren't old enough to comprehend that a spider big enough to want a robin for a meal probably wasn't something they were prepared to take care of in the palace.

But it looks like the grownups recognized their good intentions in the end, and that's what counts. And they did end up getting the puppies after all.

LOL! The only requirements I had for a book for Daeron to read was that it must be BORING. I figured the elves weren't safe from the pundits who could dissect every word said, every word written, and every delegate's meal choice during the pow wow, and spend hours (or pages) rewording what you already knew. Dull is dull. :>)

Oh, so true. I bet many of us have a satchel of those stories we could tell.

But they were very responsible

They really were. Too bad they chose a pet that looked on them as if they were crickets.

And they did end up getting the puppies after all.

Yes, they did. Later. When they knew the difference in pets and spiders that ate elflings for snacks.

Actually made me want a puppy. But I broke up a squabble between two of the ones I have and got over it.

Thanks, FP, for reading and reviewing.

Thanks, Karen, now I'm going to have nightmares! LOLOL, you did a fantastic job with this. I can see why Daeron is scared of spiders, I would be too. 'Mine'... wow, who knew that one word could be so menacing. That little spider had a big appetite.

And Daeron is as hilarious as always. He really shouldn't be a warrior, you know. He should be a minstrel or court jester, given his way with words!

I really enjoyed this. I read it fast and now I'm going to go back and read it again more slowly.

Oh, you will not. You'd have been right in the middle trying to make a pet out of the poor spider baby. In fact, I should have included a little elleth named Nilmandra who thought up the entire idea. She could have been an outcast from the Fluffy and Flouncy crowd so she hung out with the guys. Hm.m.m.m. I think a new character has just been hatched. Perhaps she grows up to be the eccentric elf woman who lives out in woods and all the kids take the wounded animals and the baby birds and squirrels to her. An elven Dr. Dolittle.

Oh! The review. I got distracted there momentarily.

Thanks, Nilmandra. I enjoyed writing this and pondering why Daeron was afraid of spiders. Thanks for your help in batting about ideas. And thanks for reading and reviewing.

Oh, this one should come with a "don't have liquids in your mouth while reading this" warning! I was laughing so hard about Daeron and the spider that I was almost crying. He is such an irrepressible scamp. It seems such a typical adolescent boy thought that by adopting a spider one could prove that they were old enough to take care of a puppy. I can just see the explanations and restrictions the next time the terrible twosomes make a request for something like camping in the woods or rafting down the river.

Author Reply: LOL! Thank you, Rikki. I'm so pleased you enjoyed this tale. Daeron is a fun character to write. It is kid logic to think that adopting a spider will prove they can take care of a puppy. And it's Daeron and Legolas's luck to come home with a dangerous spider that will one day be the size of a Volkswagen.

I bet you're right about the rules and regulations given to these two the next time they make a request.

Thanks again. I appreciate you reading and taking the time to review.

Oh man, I've missed Daeron. I didn't realize how much until I started to read this. As always, your language, his language, is a huge part of the fun of reading. Holy jumping warg spit! LOLOL

Daeron has such an irreverant view of the world. I laughed when he assumed Legolas was drooling in his sleep and hoped the book would dry out by the time he had to read it. The boys are so funny together. None of this palsy walsy mellon nin crap. They annoy one another and let it be known. You must have two sons!

For once, Daeron is the one with the most sense. Although Legolas does make him keep Spike under his bed so maybe that's a point for the Thranduilion. I can't imagine how scary it was to wake up wrapped in webbing. No wonder all the relatives went mad. Poor Aldamir. For that matter, poor Seregon, having to sleep with a terrified little brother.

This was a great story, Karen. Thank you so much!!!

Author Reply: I'm sorry I was late getting this up, but you know how I love to celebrate a birthday for a whole month!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I certainly enjoyed hooking back up with Daeron. I've missed him too. He's always a fun character to write. And...uh...no...he and Legolas are not always palsy walsy. They're together sometimes only because of proximity. But I wouldn't want to be the sucker who tried to pick on one or the other of them. A united front would form pretty darn fast.

For once, Daeron is the one with the most sense.

Daeron thanks you for seeing this important point. But if you asked me, I'd say he was always just a tad squeamish about creepy crawlies and hoped to talk Legolas out of the spider as a pet. But yes, absolutely, the Thranduilion knew when to delegate responsibilities. His daddy didn't raise no fool.

I felt bad for Seregon too. I imagine the king's displeasure trickled down to those under Aldamir's command. And on top of that, poor Seregon--he who will make a terrible parent someday--had to sleep with his little brother for a month. You'll note that big brother also reads regularly to the little brother. Poor Seregon gets a bad rap at every turn. At least we know in a few years when Seregon comes to Daeron's rescue in 'Serious Trouble' that Daeron gains new insight into his brother.

Again, happy, happy birthday!
