That was so sad,I wish he didnt have to die but its Tolkiens world and the way of war I suppose I liked the puppy part,I like puppies better than spiders althou those stories were so good. Well Ill be waiting to enjoy anymore of these birthday presents, they just never seem to stop coming!Happy Birthday again Daw!!!!

Author Reply: I was trying really hard to work in a spider but Alagos didn't want any part of it. He also likes puppies much better. And I wish Halbarad didn't have to die, too. It's amazing to me how a character who only gets a few lines in Return of the King can make such an impression on us.

Ah lovely. I welcome angst done as well as this. Angst is part of Arda too, and it always lurked there for Halbarad. Was this hard to write or have you already come to terms with that?

As I read the part about Halbarad's father dying at home, I thought how sanitized death is for us. We usually keep it out of our homes and in some clean place where someone else does the tending and all we can do it wait. Then the body gets cleaned up elsewhere. Of course, most of us don't see that kind of violent death either. For these folks, it was all much closer.

What a strong woman Eirien is. Shows that you don't have to be a warrior to be heroic.

Did Alagos die at Sarn Ford? I can't remember. He's as unreasonable as children can be when Big Things scare them and they need reassurance.

I see the kittens are being immortalized here, and they share a name with the spider Karen wrote about. :-)

like some great, multi-limbed insect

What a fabulous comparison. I can just see it.

Thank you for this gift, Meckinock. I've been checking for it regularly and got all excited when I finally saw it. This has been a great birthday.

What was hard was trying to come up with a story idea that would not be a total angst-fest :-) Failed at that! It's not really hard for me to delve into Halbarad's death, although I think it was at one time. Three years ago when I was writing a largely comedic portion of "Hands," Windfola posted "Betrothal" and it killed me to read the part where Halbarad's pack is found on the battlefield at Pelennor. I think that might have been what started me working to come to terms with it.

Yep, Halbarad mentions in "Hands" that his son is Captain at Sarn Ford, and in "Honor" he's the son Granna Nelaer is supposed to be living with when she shows up in the Angle. It's never specified but he's still posted there in 3018.

I couldn't resist borrowing the name "Spike." And if you noticed, I sort of borrowed the title of your birthday story for me.

Sorry this was late - between kitten emergencies and work and houseguests I couldn't get it done on time. I hope you didn't mind extending the big birthday bash a few days.
