The Tenant from Staddle  by Larner 346 Review(s)
SunnyReviewed Chapter: 37 on 1/14/2009
Angrapain hasn’t learned a thing, has he? Halladan is certain to have gotten a report from Aragorn on him and the terms of his punishment (and if he hasn’t, I am certain Alvric knows more than a bit). And the company he is keeping now isn’t more likely to see much mercy from a judge either.
I _do_ hope Holdfast comes out of this more or less intact. Well, whether or not he _does_, rescue is already on the way. :-)
And I expect both Angrapain and his newfound “friends” to find out just _who_ those ragged-looking Rangers, and the even more suspicious Strider, are.

Do you think your muse is likely to heed any prodding toward _Stirring Rings_? I know there is likely to be quite a few chapters before you get that far, but I am interested in finding out what will happen with Maglor, and I won’t find _that_ out before those intervening chapters are written…
Not that I mind her Dol Amroth distraction, though ;-)

Author Reply: If you remember, Halladan was there when Angrapain received his judgment from Aragorn, so he knows what's what with the fool. And you're certainly right about the company he's keeping as well, and how all of them will have quite the lesson about those raggedy Rangers.

Will be working on Stirring Rings again next, I think. But the plot bunnies and nuzguls are multiplying around here so! Heh!

Ooh Larner, I am very glad to see this updated. I knew that we hadn't seen the last of Angrapain & co. Please don't leave us too long to find out what happens next!

Author Reply: Now to find out what these three have earned for themselves! Am working on the next chapter to Stirring Rings, first, then this one, I think--unless this one grabs hold and won't let go, of course!

*grin* Oh wow! We get to see Angrapain finally get his real come-uppance, and Bill Ferny as well! *grins some more and rubs hands*

Looks like Angrapain hasn't learned a thing. Not that I *really* expected he'd learn much except what it was like not to be able to tell people what to do. I'm glad he decided not to kill his mistress, even if for selfish reasons.

And the idiot still has not figured out yet that not everyone is motivated by the same things that he is. A lot like Sauron, or Saruman. It really leads to underestimating others--especially those percieved as "lower" than himself. (And to that sort of mentality, almost everyone else qualifies as "lower".)

I forgot about your disposal of Bill Ferny, and I'm afraid I don't remember who that other man is. So it'e interesting to see them enter into this escape attempt.

Author Reply: I had never detailed the disposal of Bill Ferny--I just figured that once the folk of Bree realized that the Rangers were the King's folk they'd denounce Ferny, particularly if it were known he'd been hiding out in the Shire. They might not be certain what Bill had done there, but they had to be certain, knowing him, it was nefarious, so of course he'd most likely end up on a road gang.

I never introduced the other man--just one taken by the Rangers for highway robbering and intending not to learn from the experience or accept the chance for redemption, who instead will go for about anything nefarious!

I just hope that Holdfast doesn't end up getting hurt along the way!

Oooh! A cliff hanger!

I love how you bring strands from your other tales into the current one, weaving such an intricate storied web. :) I do hope that this time around Ferny does buy it... but, so far, he's like a bug that no amount of stomping seems to kill.

It was good to see the alert for this chapter come up, as this is one of my favorite stories! Another well-deserved "Well Done!" for this one!

Author Reply: Am so glad you're continuing to follow this, Rhyselle. And you know me--I'll always weave them together, I think.

I suspect this is the last chance for Ferny, although once it's realized what he did in the Shire he may be in for a true awakening.

And, yes, a cliff hanger in this one! Heh!

What a lovely wedding!

Author Reply: Again, thanks so very much! I love writing weddings, I find!

Those gifts are all so beautiful and perfect - and gifts from the King and the Steward too! What a lovely wedding. I'm so pleased that Alvric asked Barti to stand with him.

Now if only Barti could get over his loathing of Frodo..........

Author Reply: I'm so glad you appreciated them. I'd think that this tangible proof that her husband is so honored by those who sent him to Bree would help Denra realize just how big the world is as well as the importance the King places on her new husband's errand!

And I agree about Barti and Frodo! Heh!

Sweet! Love the description of the wedding gifts!

Author Reply: Thank you so, Lume! Love to see characters I've come to love getting some of my favorite things from the days my late husband and I had an antique store. Lithopane pottery and figured lace, and silver trays....

Finally got time to read and savour this chapter Larner.

Love your different takes on polystyrene packing materials *g* And the velvets will be useful too.
I am glad that the dog and cat are getting on so well. Trust them both to find a good spot to watch from.
The pottery sounds beautiful - hope that cat is careful though! You can keep the punch set though I want a piece of the volcano glass!!!!

Ah! More OCs to grow to know and love; our wonderful Ranger's wives.
Barti continues to be touched and changed by the people and events around him. I am glad that Alvric asked him to stand for him.

The wedding ceremony was lovely. Methinks foresight came into play over the wedding gifts!

*big satisfied sigh* as I come to the end and glad the Muse is moving this on.

Author Reply: If I am ever able to come to England again I shall bring you some Mount St. Helens glass, if that would be acceptable.

When my father died and Mom had to return Stateside from Costa Rica they packed her dishes in great pasteboard barrels, with straw as the packing.

The reeds and rushes from the swamps and ponds on our property had a thick, spongy pith, which would do well, I'd think, as packing. I used to wind it into helmets for when we pretended to be knights in armor, and we had alder shoots trimmed of branches as spears.

Now that Sauron is cast down, I'd think that the Rangers would finally begin showing those in the Breelands and similar settlements that they, too, are family men; and of course they'd wish to share a wedding with their wives!

Glad you enjoyed the ceremony. Thanks so!

Awww! So lovely! Nice wedding gifts - Delphie certainly knows how to do things properly.

And Master Alvric seems to know how to deal with dear Bartolo - just a little kindness, a little well-deserved attention, and he's uncurling and not bristling his spikes anymore.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love this story?

Author Reply: Oh, yes, Delphie definitely has taste. And both she and Alvric have learned how to deal with Barti by now. It's helped him release some of his resentment--at least for the moment.

And I'm so glad you do! Now, to finish with the editing of that last chapter....
