Neath Anor, Ithil, and Gil  by Larner 14 Review(s)
Raksha The DemonReviewed Chapter: 13 on 11/28/2007
One of your most lyrical and poetic pieces yet; and a tale that echoes the best parts of the Silmarillion in style.

I love the image of the three Valar helping Nerdanel in the forge. The concept of her using the necklace that Feanor had given her, fruit of a love now darkened by sorrow, to make new works that would bring hope and help to the people of Middle-earth, is wonderful. And I can see that Nerdanel, a she-elf who, I believe, needed to be useful, was helped by her labors; in bringing forth such needful things. I love it that she made the stone that Arwen eventually gave to Frodo.

A lovely story! I've written my own take on the fate of that necklace, but I think yours is outstanding.

Author Reply: I am so grateful for your comments, Raksha. As I explained to eiluj, I've been wanting to have some specific item present in my last chapter for "Stirring Rings," and this allowed for that need. And who better to help with the bellows than Tulkas, Aule himself, and Manwe, eh?

And am so glad the fate of Nerdanel's own necklace here worked to marvelously for you. Thank you!

I had two very vicious plot bunnies assault me as Gandalf approaches the Barrow-downs in my current chapter of "Stirring Rings," both of which are tied to a vision Gandalf knows there, and I've written both out, and now one is posted. Hopefully the other will be posted shortly.

Thanks so much again. Nerdanel needed something to help her feel she is useful, rather than wandering the seashore listening for echoes of her son's singing as I've seen elsewhere; and we needed SOME source for Arwen's pendant.

I'll have to find your take on her necklace, if I haven't read it already.

This is my first Nerdanel fic, a thing I'd never dreamed I'd write. I'd wanted to write her contributing somehow to the forging of the Elessar and the Evenstar pendant; at least I COULD write her actually creating the latter.

This was a very interesting take on things--I like the idea of Nerdanel once more being able to practice her craft for the benefit of all.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Dreamflower. I, too, like the thought of Nerdanel actually DOING something to help make things better rather than wandering the shores of Aman as lost as is her remaining son.

Lovely. Beautifully done. This bit took my breath away.

Oromë lifted his head proudly. The ability to follow the trail of evil and the craft to stalk it quietly will be needed.

Thank you for including the author's note. I'm always a bit at sea when reading of the Valar. I really need to read the Sil again; I read it too many years ago now, to remember all but a few bits.

Author Reply: I hope this response will post now--Hughes has been being difficult for the past week, allowing me on for only a short while at a time, then cutting me off again. And I have to leave for work all too soon as well.

The ability to follow the trail is a necessary one, we know, and it would be what Orome could give to the blessings. I noted I left out Ulmo, but suspect that he had his own way of adding to the blessing. After all, it's said he was the one least likely to attend on the others in Aman.

The stories of the Elessar are recounted briefly in Unfinished Tales, which I went through twice looking to try to figure out what precisely Nerdanel MIGHT have crafted herself, and how she might have added to the forging of the Elessar.

I myself tend to read the Simlarillion much as I do the Bible, a bit here and there as I feel moved. It's not necessarily the type of work one reads from cover to cover, I find. I am finding myself liking stories of the Valar more and more as time goes on.

Thanks for the feedback. I plan to be down the week after the sixteenth, and hope to see you and the family then.

This story is as exquisitely and intricately crafted as the gems themselves. Beautiful, Larner.
