Temporary Companion  by Edoraslass 16 Review(s)

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Strider and a puppy!

And an extra squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for Strider becoming reluctantly attached to the critter, and for finding him what sounds like the best home in Middle-earth.

(Note to dog owners - the story illustrates the importance of brushing one's dog's teeth, beginning when they're puppies (very lightly and gently to start with, especially with teething youngsters) - if they're accustomed to it when young, they'll always let you do it, and there are varieties of canine toothpaste and toothbrushes available now.)

Author Reply: Hee heeee..it's hard not get attached to enthusiastic little puppies, isn't it?

and yes, I firmly believe that everyone should brush their dog's teeth, cause, ooh, what a smell that can be!

Thanks, Raksha!

Ah HA!! I had a feeling the birthday hobbit was Pippin!! How perfectly fluffy and adorable this is. Strider and a puppy...Sigh!! He would miss the lil guy too. But as he said, a Ranger just can't have a puppy. No matter how much he would want one.

What a wonderful thing to read on a very chilly night. Thanks Edoraslass!! :o)

But now he's King, and he can have all the puppies he wants! Huzzah!

Thanks!

I enjoyed this very much. Of course it would have been impossible for Aragorn to have a dog in the wild, especially a puppy, but it was nice that he got to enjoy one for just a bit. Nothing warms the heart like a puppy - unless it's a kitten! The people of Bree got to see him in a bit of a different light too. I loved the fact that Pippin ended up with the puppy! That was clever and you just know the dog will be spoiled. :) Thanks for sharing.

Pippin and his dog are going to terrorize everyone, I just know it. No pie will be safe now. :)

Thanks!

Okay Strider with a puppy seems ridiculously mawkish and silly until you actually SEE Strider with the puppy and find out that it works perfectly. I loved your description of the wriggly bundle of energy. I think the puppy really showed the side of Aragorn that we see when he dealing most gently with the Hobbits - I could imagine him side-tracking to find a home for a puppy.

Also liked the comment about never meeting so many dog-lovers who don't want a dog. You'll never meet so many people ready to cuddle a puppy for five minutes only as when your trying to give one away.

Yes, I think he greatly enjoys looking after those who need to be looked after; it's just not always evident when he's hanging out with capable Rangers.

Thanks!

This was really sweet while keeping Strider wonderfully in character. I was glad to see him so determined to find the pup a good home, and I felt sorry for him that he couldn't allow himself to think of the dog as his own. I also laughed at Strider finding so many dog-loving people who didn't seem to need a dog! I've been in a similar position and the smiles and nods and lack of an offer were right on target!

I have to admit, I will stop and snuggle free puppies, but I've never taken one. It's just impossible to not snuggle them!

Thank you!

This is a darling story, giving Strider a few moments of warmth and companionship he rarely knows. (And letting eyes see that can that *he* is a man of compassion, himself.)

"I think this little fellow would find a good home there among all them mad, dog-loving, child-spoiling Tooks.”

How lovely. Perhaps someday Strider will meet this dog again, and they will remember one another with fondness.

Yep, he is - he just can't always let himself be, if that makes sense. And a puppy certainly doesn't expect much from him. :)

Thanks!
