Vows  by French Pony 45 Review(s)

A Good Thing for the whole of Middle-earth that Maglor took Earendil's children to his heart - and this his brother loved him enough to let him have his way.

Oh dear. More oaths. But for a better cause this time. All three of these poor lost people need someone to trust and look after.

Blooming Feanor - destroyer of his own family and of many others.

I'd never noticed the symmetry of Elrond and Elros being taken in just as Amrod and Amras die. Tolkien was good at that sort of thing, leaving it understated but suggestive. I suppose he may not even have been consciously aware of it sometimes.

Someday, we will recover Father’s jewels

I think I've had a little too much caffeine because suddenly I'm reading the Silm as a story about castration fears. :-)

Just getting time for reading...

Holy Cow! The battle between Feanor and the balrogs was really well done and his death! Everytime I read how he spent his last moments in this world all I can think is how tragic and what a waste. That must have been a difficult scene to write and you did a great job with it. The whole of this chapter must have been difficult to write--so heavy with grief. The ending, therefore, was perfect. The song was perfect there--an attempt at normality, hope, lightness. It was the saddest part of all to me, really. Great chapter.

I was able to print out these first five chapters and read them all last night. I had wondered how far into his life you were going to take this and felt horrid when I realized you were going to take your readers through the curse and the oath... not happy about that - but so well written that I must continue to read - IMHO this is the blackest spot in Elvish history!

Feanor - such a selfish ... person. Maedhros - what a mug. Maglor - yet more being dumped on him. They are all in such a trap, with nowhere to go but down.

They now realize that Morgoth is indeed the father of lies, and will learn all too soon that Sauron, as his second, will be the same.

Liars both, and served by the Balrogs.

Ah, the grief of it, losing all that had meaning to him to follow his father's words elsewhere, never siring the child he so desired. I grieve for him, and for his eventual fate.

The "Whoop whoop whoop" song! *happy dance* What a way to end this chapter!

The leadership of the Noldor has just crumbled, hasn't it? You show it all happening so fast, with no time to adjust...very well done!

What an incredibly bleak life and what a contrast to the life they once had.

You capture the oppressive darkness at the beginning of this chapter very well--how it must have felt to these elves that knew nothing but the beauty of Valinor previously. And you capture the rage of Feanor and the way he kept everyone driven perfectly. I am glad Calimë did not go, because this will only get worse, but how incredibly sad for both of them.
