Let Him Eat Cake  by Grey Wonderer 18 Review(s)
LarnerReviewed Chapter: 1 on 7/1/2007
Too much cake even for poor Pippin? And Diamond helping load him up on it? Oh, how wonderful! Poor, poor lad!

Now--he can pretend to be just a lad and have his mum hold his hand and love him as mum's do, and relax--and by the end of the week he'll be loving cake once more! I suspect his mother's right on that count!

Thanks for the laughs.

Author Reply: So glad you enjoyed this one. I thought it was a bit different then allowing Pippin to get drunk with Merry for his coming of age. And I could see this happening to Pippin. Thank you for reviewing.
As to Eglantine, I think this let her know that her youngest would always need her. : )

This is such a sweet story, and I mean that in all it's meanings.:)

I knew fairly early on that poor Pippin was in trouble, but it was interesting to see how his difficulty unfolded.

I felt so sorry for him when Merry found him. I'm glad, though, that it was Merry and not some other well-meaning relative offering him more cake.

The last bit with Pippin and his mum was so loving. Just what a young adult needs most, his mum to be close when needed, but willing to let him be as grown up as he wants to be.

Great job GW.

Author Reply: It was pretty clear where this one was going, wasn't it? LOL
When I read Dreamflower's story I thought it would be funny if rather than getting drunk from drinking the toasts to his health at his coming of age party if Pippin just ate too much cake like a much younger hobbit might have done. I didn't want it to be for childish reasons so I had to give him an adult reason to over-indulge, not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings. Thank you for reading and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Oh dear, poor Pip! Even the legendary Peregrin Took's appetite for cake has been defeated! And how typical of Merry to go out and tell the assembled guests that Pip is drunk rather than beaten by cake. At least Diamond won't have to be offended.

A lovely story and so typical of our Pip.

Author Reply: Yes leave it to Merry to cover up things well. He has had a bit of experience so he should make a fine show of it. As to Pippin's appetite for cake, well I guess everyone, even Pippin has a limit! LOL

Oh, I liked this! And I wonder if anybody will ever believe that Pippin ate all that cake just to make other people happy. Well, I think he's going to make a lovely a grown-up and I hope his mama's potion works quickly!

Happy Birthday to Dreamflower!

Author Reply: Thank you. Pippin might have trouble making anyone believe that he was only eating some of that cake for the sake of others. LOL And I am certain that Eglantine might have believed it. Glad you liked this one!

This is a darling story, and what a wonderful gift for Dreamflower. Pippin certainly is learning "Watch out what you wish for, you might get it!"

But I especially loved this...

did enjoy the cake. The truth was he enjoyed making her happy far more than he enjoyed the cake. That was a bit troubling

Awwww.

Author Reply: Thank you. I suspect that any time a hobbit thinks of anything or anyone before they think of food then it's a sign of something important. LOL

LOL! This is very funny and sweet. I especially liked the bit where Merry says that in his mind, Pippin will never be older than ten years old. And the last bit with Pippin and Eglantine was just adorable!

Author Reply: Merry's line comes from something that happens to me. I seem to have trouble realizing that younger family members are all grown up at times. I have an age for them and for some reason when I think of them they are always at that age when I picture them in my mind. LOL

Glad you enjoyed this and I do hope that you have a bit of time to write more yourself soon. I miss your lovely tales!

Aw that last bit was so sweet!

And I gave up trying to count....

Oh, GW, this was adorable!! I do love the fact that Pippin was *planning* to not really eat all that cake, but he just couldn't stand to hurt anyone's feelings! That's such a Pippish thing to do.

And Merry was perfect in this, figuring out what had happened, and giving Pippin a good excuse to be sick, and teasing him just enough to get his mind off his misery, but not enough to really upset him!

And I am quite sure that somewhere on Tol Eressea, Frodo and Bilbo were looking in a palantir, and chuckling over Pippin's birthday, and drinking his health.

*grin* I love it very much, and it's a lovely birthday present! *here's a big hug!*

Author Reply: Awww, thank you for the big hug and thank you for sparking the idea that resulted in this story. I do hope that you had a lovely birthday.
I didn't want Merry to actually admit that he would NEVER tell any of this because I can imagine him telling it to Pippin's children at some future date when they've had too much cake. I did think that Merry could be trusted to keep quiet about it for a few years though. LOL
As to Bilbo and Frodo, that is one of the many reasons I enjoy your story that inspired this; Frodo has a future among the hobbits in it! : )
