The Eagle's Gift  by Raksha The Demon 14 Review(s)

"Did the Ecthelion's eagle have to stick his beak..." was hilarious. Denethor's wish to check if the eagle can fly was priceless. I like the way you portray Denethor nervous, impatient, but still shrewed and calculating (and miscalculating). Very funny.

Author Reply: Thanx for reading and reviewing, phyloxena!

I'm glad you liked the tale; I did have a little fun with Denethor's dark thoughts about the Eagle. And Denethor was, for a change, easy to write. He's always shrewd, even when angry!

A splendid mixture of comedy and seriousness. I love the idea of old Ecthelion trying to out-drink Adrahil Iron-Gullet.

The way the conversation evolved is fascinating, especially the way the two rivals reach a sort of fragile amity which is genuine, but doesn't affect the underlying resentment. There's clearly a lot of this story that remains untold; I hope you're going to tell it!

Horn-charm indeed! I hope nobody tried offering Faramir one.

Author Reply: I visualize Ecthelion as a John Wayne type; macho, brave, also perceptive, and probably the only thing he feared was growing old and infirm.

I was trying to bring the two rivals to a fragile truce and moment of almost-brotherhood, but it wasn't easy; Denethor was seething and Thorongil wanted to fly away but had to carry out the errand.

Not sure how much more of this story I will tell; or when.

I can just see Faramir going through his father's belongings and finding the horn-charm; he'd probably be amused, slightly embarrassed perhaps, and wonder that Pops was actually so human.

I'm glad the comedy came through; and thanx for reading!

Wonderful chatacterization of Thorongil as 'the eagle'. Lovely to see the birth of Denethor's antagonism to his future sucessor. Very well crafted and thought out.LBJ

Author Reply: I really felt bad for Denethor at the intrusion of the nosy Eagle; but Thorongil had little choice in the matter, though he did warm up enough to give a blessing.

Thanx for reading and reviewing, LBJ!

A fascinating confrontation between this complex man and the one whom he perceives as his rival. You have captured both Denethor's anxiety and arrogance so well.

Author Reply: Thanx for reading and reviewing, harrowcat! I haven't attempted anything like this before, and was quite nervous writing it, trying to create the right level of tension and the subtle interplay of power. Yes, Denethor is quite the intriguing blend of anxiety and arrogance. I'm glad you liked the tale.
