What a beautiful expression of brotherly love.

Author Reply: Thank you. It's that deep love that I so like to see between the twins.

Jeez Jay,
I don't know whether to be happy or sad. Every time I read these letters I end up as crying mess. My husband and sons run for cover every time (humm, wait a minute, this might not be so bad after all.)
Well done, I'm glad Elrohir came to his conclusion, I too can't imagine them apart.

Author Reply: This should be happy. Elrohir realised that he would never be content or happy if he and Elladan chose different fates, so although he'd rather sail in the end, he'll accept whatever Elladan decides.

I'm sorry you end up crying - should I take it as a compliment?

Wow. Now that's putting your fate in someone else's hands.

Author Reply: Yes - but he's trusted his life to Elladan so many times before, so is this really any different?

I just can't imagine them being parted.

Jay

Definitely a case of being all too able to read between the lines. What was truly being felt is being so diplomatically hidden beneath platitudes. I grieve with them.

Author Reply: I think it helped Elrohir to put his true feelings into words here - even though he knows no-one will never read them.

The challenge for me was to contrast his emotions with what he actually told Celebrían.

Oh my! *shivers in sadness*

I do love the feel of the strike-outs, though I'm sure Elrohir rewrote the whole thing before sending it off to Cirdan.

Very well written - I wonder how much of the 'hidden' message I would have gleaned if you had only shared the 'revised' letter.

Thank you for sharing this poignant insight into the confines of Rivendell after Celebrian's sailing.

Author Reply: Like the letter to Elladan, this version was never meant to be read. The one eventually sent to Celebrían was the edited, bland rewrite.

I think readers would have been able to read between the lines a bit, but the strikeouts show the depth of Elrohir's sense of pain and loss.

Thank you for reviewing these letters - I have four more to go!

What a delightful little letter. It seems plausible, with the comings and goings of the Dwarves, that one or two would be befriended by our beloved Elrohir. Nice job.

Author Reply: Ori learned the Elvish script somewhere, most probably in Imladris. So why not from Elrohir?

but they’re just Nana and Ada. I told her it’s not the same.

ROTFL - the wisdom of a child.

As for the rest, I found it quite bitter-sweet. I am surprised Elrond was not more supportive... I know why he sent Elrohir off, but a little more 'support' from his dad might have helped.

Author Reply: Elrond probably was more sympathetic and supporting - Elrohir's just feeling hard done by, and imagines he's the only one in the world who has someone he misses!

It is my sincerest hope that Elladan is NOT reading this. That we are just being shone it as it is written - to be stored away - just in case.

Author Reply: No, thankfully Elladan will never have to read it. It's one of those 'To be opened in the event of my death' letters.

The Elladan on my flist read it though, and said it would give him nightmares :(

Another thought: one of the things that is most eloquent about these letters is what is not said... it's unusual to actually see the missing text in this one!

Well done, Jay!

- Barbara

Author Reply: Thanks - I wanted to show the contrast between the pain he feels, and what he felt able to tell Celebrían. He wouldn't want to burden her further with the weight of their grief. The strikethrough font was very useful here.

Oh, how heart-rending, Jay! *sniffles*

- Barbara

Author Reply: Poor Elrohir. His pain is very raw here.
