harrowcatReviewed Chapter: 5 on 3/5/2008
And I get to be first to review! Crying at work - again Larner! But happy tears though. It is great how things will work themselves out for the good.

(Mum - Back home and only a little worse for the experience but with a pressure sore that is going to take another time healing! Dad - Had broncosopy and CT scan. now awaiting results. Jet - bouncy as usual and sends you a depp and loud WOOOOOOF!)

Author Reply: Crying at work once more? Oh, dear! And am glad this brought joyful tears this time.

Another pressure sore! Poor thing! And am praying for the reports. And Yogi sends a bark Jet's way.

oh, I'm so relieved he sailed! (Frodo). Lovely chapter!

Author Reply: So glad you approve! Thanks, Claudia!

Larner, you are amazing!

There I had thought, you would continue the story in Minas Tirith with Frodo struggling to make it to the ship. But you decided to continue in the Shire when the three travellers came home again - accompanied by the King himself! Wow!

Beeing confronted with Aragorn, the elves and even Gloin Paladin and his wife could no longer deny the truth! At least this turn of events is an improvement to what would have happened, had Frodo returned to the Shire in the first place.

I'm glad that Frodo made it to the ship and I believe he'll make it to Tol Eressea! Elrond's draughts are powerful indeed :)

But the best part was at the very end of this chapter:

“Can you forgive us, Pippin?”

The first, rather watery, smile they’d seen on Pippin’s face that day lit his expression. “Oh, Da!” was his answer as, forgetting his dignity as one of the King’s own Guard, he hurried to throw his arms about the two of them.

Lovely! Thank you very much!

Author Reply: I felt that this would best not be long and drawn out--only one more chapter, and then the author's notes, such as they might be by the time I post them. But who better than the King himself to counter the denial of Eglantine and Paladin Took? Am so glad you approve! And thank YOU.

Oh, I am happy for Pippin. :o) Your description of Frodo losing his privacy reminded me of nursing homes.

They can't undo what's been done (Frodo not returning to the Shire earlier), but in hindsight I think it would have made Frodo's remaining time on M-e the more pleasant to know that he was *needed*, back in the Shire. We all need that, I think.

Author Reply: Oh, I agree--knowing that I'm not only needed but that my work is appreciated is all that keeps me in it! Frodo's being able to contribute to the life and recovery of the Shire was necessary to him, I'd think, in the time after the return; this way he was helpful to Aragorn, but must have felt helpless not being able to see his own land and people restored.

Today is my day of reviews, then – this is the twelfth, if I have counted correctly ... ;-) This week was too busy to get much reviewing done; never managed more than skimming the updates, if at all.

Ah, good – you spared me another heart-rendering farewell, keeping it short enough that it was bearable with only a few tears and I did *not* end up crying my eyes out as usual. Though I am glad Aragorn got to say Goodbye properly this time, and not only he, but all the others as well.

Ha, I got my wish another time – Aragorn visited the Shire! Yay! It’s great that he decided not to only send Lord Halladan into the Shire to convince Paladin and Eglantine, but to go himself. Frodo would have been so glad, had he known it! And these two truly could not deny anything any longer, after been told by the High King himself, with his foster brothers and Lord Glorfindel as further witnesses ... I absolutely love that!

Author Reply: Am so glad I didn't get everyone all soaking wet this time. Hee! And I, too, am glad that this time Aragorn did get to say his goodbyes properly, as well as the other, more relevant folk. And you're right--it's rather hard to disbelieve this kind of witness!

Somehow, I'd expected Frodo to die in Minas Tirith. So he took ship on the Anduin instead!

Author Reply: Aren't you glad? And I'd think that Frodo would be horrified to think of being laid in a tomb in the Hallows, myself! Heh!

It is no good Larner. I really must remember to save this until i get home. Crying at work always provokes difficult questions!

Author Reply: I'm sorry, Harrowcat! Don't mean to get you all weepy!

Hope your folks are better, and that the pressure sore is healing.

Oh, you didn’t forget that in this AU there has to be another way how Aragorn gets his new steed! :-)

You know, it is touching to see how much the people of Minas Tirith care for Frodo and are concerned for him. And I was shaking my head as Frodo woke up and his first thought was how exhausted the others had to be. It’s about time he quit worrying about others and thinks of himself first!

So Frodo has only waited to see his friends again? Well, it seems to strengthen him, and sleeping surrounded by all his loved ones has to be good for him. It was interesting that he questioned everyone available about what they thought he ought to do now, but Legolas is right – Frodo has to make the decision for his own sake, not for the wishes of others. (Not that I doubt their common acceptance of him sailing helped him to finally accept the gift!)

Frodo truly did think of everything, didn’t he? To make sure all these papers were prepared and that Pippin is bringing them with him to Gondor ...

Hm ... from what Sam tells here, I believe Will and the others may think of him as a good Mayor rather easily, after he took over things Gordolac should have done. No Frodo there this time in whose shadow Sam could be hiding ;-)

Author Reply: "All things work to the Good..." goes the scripture, and I like to think most would turn out well in spite of the incompetence of Gordolac Whitfoot. So, how would things change in this instance? And without Frodo there, Sam's own abilities shone out the more as you've pointed out--at least for those who truly know what all the Mayor ought to see done. And I agree that the common acceptance of his going undoubtedly helped him accept that it was right that he accept this grace.

Am so glad you had the chance to read it--and now the next chapter is up.

Good set up of your AU elements so far, Bonnie. Frodo has had a heart attack? Yikes. That's terribly upsetting. I'm eager to see how Frodo's life in Minas Tirith has unfolded, Gondor babe that I am.

- Steff

Author Reply: Am so glad you like it, Stefania. Hope you've been following it and have seen some of how I've envisioned Frodo's acceptance within Gondor. Many of those who send flowers to Frodo in the Citadel are described in The King's Commission, The Ties of Family, The Acceptable Sacrifice, or some of my short stories in the Moments in Time collection. The peacock feathers refer to events in Iridescence and Unbelief. I love Gondor, also; but love the Shire at least as much.

I really really like this. A lot. I ADORE any and all Frodo and Aragorn friendship fics, and I had actually been thinking of some time doing one post-quest. This is so sad and angsty and I love it!

Author Reply: I hope you continue to do so. Thank you.
