Gamesmanship  by Raksha The Demon 15 Review(s)
CeleritasReviewed Chapter: 1 on 10/17/2008
This was a lovely action piece, Raksha! Whenever I encounter him in post-War fics, I tend to forget that the scholarly Faramir is actually still able to kick butt in battle--his breaking "Rat-face"'s neck with his bare hands was a powerful antidote to that! *chills* It seems Eomer was making the same assumptions I was!

And the duel at the end was lovely, too--the scamp's taunting immediately brought to mind all the old swashbuckling films and possibly a bit of Monkey Island. : )

The discussion on the battle count ("You think too much!") was a good coda. Thanks for reminding me why I love these characters so.

Author Reply: Thanx for reading and giving such a lovely review, Celeritas!

Faramir would not have been able to immediately settle down in Fourth Age Emyn Arnen and enjoy nothing but scholarly and princely pursuits. Tolkien implied in HoME that Faramir would spend some years in the Fourth Age clearing out Minas Morgul and Ithilien's eastern border, as well as occasionally riding to war with Aragorn. I deliberately had him kill Rat-face with his hands, to remind Eomer how strong those hands would be; it's highly probable that Faramir was a very skilled archer as well as an outstanding rider.

Doesn't every pirate story have to have a duel on the railing at the end?

I'm glad you enjoyed the story, Celeritas; I had fun writing it.

wonderful story, and your acion is very smooth you should write it more often. the piece fowed and surged and ran all over the computer screen keepng the entertainment level well within bounds, not too much blood not too much guts but very believable. thank you for sharing.

Author Reply: I find writing fighting scenes to be very difficult, or at least not easy; because I want it to be credible, and I have very little (almost none) knowledge of combat, martial arts, swordsmanship, etc. I'm delighted that you found the story entertaining. Thanx for reading and reviewing, nancylea!

I love Eomer in this story, especially how he feels naked without his horse and likens Faramir to one at the end, which I assume is Eomer's greatest compliment!
A very exciting story. I'm sure Eomer will look at Faramir differently in future. It must be hard to be both a great warrior and a compassionatate and thoughtful man.

Author Reply: Well, poor Eomer would feel naked without his horse, he's the Horse-lord of horse-lords; and he's got his boots, sword, but no horse; of course he'd feel a certain lack...Thanx for noticing that line. I'm pleased that you found the story exciting; I think Eomer found the experience quite a rousing one.

I do think Eomer respects Faramir; but it's a bit difficult to understand someone who doesn't enjoy boasting about his battle-count.

I think one can be a great warrior while being a compassionate and thoughtful man; but the compassion would be more difficult to handle; Faramir probably learned fairly young to turn it off during battle. Though I doubt he'd ever be a willing party to the deliberate killing of non-combatants. Faramir's been lucky in that he's never been in a situation where the lines between soldier and civilian get confused, hasn't he...

Author Reply: Oops, forgot to thank you for reviewing, and also for the help in the editing process. Thanx much!

Marvelous, Raksha! And a worthy pair the two of them are, the young King of Rohan and the thoughtful Steward of Gondor, Prince of Ithilien.

Author Reply: Thanx for reading and reviewing, Larner! I would certainly not like to be a Corsair facing either Eomer or Faramir; and if I saw both of them, I'd take my chances in the sea...
