More Dangerous and Less Wise  by daw the minstrel 29 Review(s)

What a wonderful surprise to see another Daw story! I love your characters so much, I'm very glad to get another glimpse into their lives.

I particularly enjoyed the little touches of humour all the way through the chapter, especially the comparison of Beliond to a bossy Noldor lady :)

Now, with the tantalising offer of a tale of Thranduil's younger days, all I can do is echo Legolas: "Tell."

Author Reply: LOL. Poor Beliond. He wants you to know that he doesn't think that's funny and Legolas is going to pay for thinking it!

I miss these guys so it's nice to have a chance to write about them once in a while. The story won't be very long and will be mostly light-hearted. We all need that sometimes!

Thanks for the review, Naledi.

Ack! I'm so excited you're posting another story, it's been so long! I hope all is going well with you and your writing outside the Woodland Realm.

This chapter is such a wonderful tease, I can't wait to hear about our three greatest protectors' youth!

Author Reply: Thanks, Rede. This story won't be very long, but it's a lot of fun to write about these guys again.

My other writing is going all right, I guess. I have an agent now and she's submitting my stuff to publishers who are looking at it. But publishing is suffering in this economy, like everything else is. In October, bookstores had their worst month ever. So publishers are reluctant to take on new books. Bad timing on my part. Buy books! Give them for Christmas!

*huge sigh of delight* Beliond. Maltanaur. Eilian. Legolas. What a treat to see this posted, daw! And what a beginning! How did I love it? Let me count the ways...All the little telling grins and glances that Eilian sent Legolas' way every time Beliond snapped at him or treated him like a particulary backward elfling! What a brother! LOL Legolas and his description of Beliond as the bossy, little Noldor lady whose family had shipped her off to see Namo during the kinslaying! *g* And the great Wood-elf who fell from a tree! Beliond's reaction to the collapse of the river bank (what WERE those combinations of words he was using? *vbg*) And Legolas and Maltanaur left behind...I can only begin to imagine what Eilian will put Beliond through on their little trip (or should I worry about Eilian instead?) Now, a story about Thranduil...I mean, really daw, can life get any better? *rubs hands together in anticipation* Thank you sosososososo for posting this!

(afterthought: I will miss older brother, though...)

Author Reply: I miss Ithilden too! I actually planned to write about him as a young elf but this story popped into my head in the middle of the night and I decided to do it instead. As I look at it now, there's more going on than I bargained for and I'm a little worried I won't do justice to the Eilian-Beliond part. But we'll see, I guess.

Thanks for the review, Linda.

Daw, you are back! Thanks!!!. Love the first chapter, I can't wait to Maltanaur to tell...I liked all the details, the part when Legolas remember the dragon with a flash of fire in his memory was very good, it made me remember the whole dragon adventure and the death of the dwarf and his family, and all Legolas' anguish, well I don't need to say that you are great. Waiting for more...

Author Reply: Sometimes it's tricky to write for people who have read the other stories and so will remember the dragon, but also in a way that's comprehensible for new readers too (if there are any). So I'm glad the flash of memory pleased you.

Thanks for the review, Fantasia.

OoOOoO!!! I am excited!!! =D Yay for more stories!!!

Author Reply: LOL. This won't be a long story because I have other fish to fry, but I'm enjoying these guys too. Thanks for the review, Faith.

Ah! Very nice indeed. I am intrigued by Meltanaur's comment about Beliond. I truly think that Legolas must learn a little respect for his guardian!

Author Reply: If I were Legolas, Beliond would drive me crazy, but he truly does care for his charge and he's sacrificed a much more exciting life to babysit, so Legolas probably does need to see him as more than his keeper. Maltanaur is going to make the effort. :-)

Thanks for the review, Agape.

Oh! This is gonna be good, I always wanted to hear the goods about Beliond! LOL! Very good story Daw and it was more than one little slip now wasn't it?? Hugs The Imp

Author Reply: I'd say a lot of slipping was going on there! LOL. We'll see what I can dig up about Beliond, and Maltanaur and Thranduil too. You can't possibly want to hear this more than Legolas does. :-)

Thanks for the review. Hugs.

Oh God, I missed these guys.

Some parts I particularly liked (loved):

"There were days when Legolas suspected Beliond of being the re-embodiment of a bossy, little Noldor lady whose family had finally had enough and shuffled her off to see Namo during the kin slaying."

--THAT is...Legolas has quite a creative imagination! :)

"Can you really climb?" Legolas asked.
"I am a Wood-Elf," Eilian said, which would have been more reassuring if he had not just fllen out of a tree.

"Beliond was already sliding down the rope, saying words in combinations wholly new to Legolas."

--and that is saying something, seeing as Beliond has been his keeper for about 50 years!!

I thought the chapter was shorter than usual, but it's just so good seeing these guys that I don't care! Of course I love Beliond as always, and I always wanted to read the brothers finding out about some of Ada's youthful antics!

Too bad Ithilden's going to be missing out! (or WILL he?)

And while Maltanaur is sharing stories with Legolas, maybe Beliond will be forced (or not so forced) to spill some to Eilian? XD

Ahh, can't wait until the next chapter!!! Update asap!

~nessie~

Author Reply: Thanks, Nessie. I missed these guys myself. This chapter is about the minimal length I like to get to, but it seemed a good place to break the story because the set up is done, more or less. I guess I have a little more to do with Eilian and Beliond. But then we get to the fun stuff. :-)

No Ithilden, I'm sorry to say.

I'll try to keep the chapters coming. The story's all outlined. I'm just slow these days.

I love seeing those parts you love!

I am so pleased you're back! Ok, my favorite line is: "I am a Wood-Elf," Eilian said, which would have been more reassuring if he had not just fallen out of a tree.

But the things I like most about this, as I mentioned already, are the use of voice and POV. You are very much in Legolas's head. The POV is tight and the opening is fast moving and engaging. I want Maltanaur to tell, too. I am very curious to know what happens next, so I guess you'll have to set aside your current manuscript and entertain us for a while instead. :>)

Author Reply: You don't know how good it makes me feel to have you comment on voice and POV. Maybe I've learned something after all.

I hope the rest of this goes well. I have a general idea of what I want to do but somehow the story on the page never lives up to the one in my head.
