The Ranger and the Hobbit  by Cairistiona 197 Review(s)

Awww...but eventually, of course, Butterbur and the others will come to realize just how useful the Rangers had been--once they are gone! Then perhaps he will feel a bit embarrassed to remember how he had treated them.

This has been a very lovely story, one I enjoyed immensely. I do hope that one day the twists of the Road will bring Ferdinand--or at least *news* of him, back into Strider's life...

Author Reply: Thank you, Dreamflower! I'm so glad you enjoyed this tale. I do think eventually news of Ferdinand or even Ferdinand himself will pop back into Aragorn's life, even as he surmises at their parting. Ferdinand's too much the wandering spirit to stay home where it's safe for long. (Although there will *not* be a 10th Walker story featuring Ferdinand! LOL)

Thank you again for all the reviews you've left for me!

What a wonderful ending to a wonderful story. I so enjoyed seeing Ferdinand's fiercely hug a surprised Aragorn. It felt very much in character. I also enjoyed Aragorn and Barliman's dialogue. You did a great job of showing how the Rangers were treated by the very people they protected, and how that kind of treatment must have grated on them.

It was good to see Halbarad fussing over Aragorn again. LOL

Author Reply: Thank you, Estelcontar! Isn't it fun to picture that hug Ferdinand gave Aragorn? And yes, I don't think Halbarad ever really stops fussing over Aragorn. He sees it as his calling, after all. :) Thank you for your help with this story and for all the reviews!

I have so enjoyed this story of an encounter that may have been.

As always it is so beautifully written, the characters all so well drawn, and the whole thing totally canon compliant(!)... Such a pleasure to read.

Author Reply: Thank you, curiouswombat! I'm so glad you enjoyed this flight of fancy... and for the extra reassurance that it was indeed canon compliant. :) I appreciate this and all the reviews you've left! Thank you again.

. . .Okay, someone needs to beat those fools up - no joke. *mutters about mean bar men.*

Eep. . .The ending? O_O; Are you ALLOWED to do that? o_O; Hope there is more to read of another story, maybe with Elrond and the twins?. . .Hint, hint, nudge, nudge. Gives chocolate. :3

Awesome as always (hahah your threats for the rangers are always amusing to visualize) and I loved it! Great job, my evil author friend! :D

Happy Holidays,

MP

Author Reply: Thank you, MP! I'm so glad you enjoyed this, and glad that you're looking forward to whatever I have coming along next... which, um, at this point I'm not really sure. I have a couple WIPs that could be next, or who knows, I might get an idea for something completely new. I know one of the WIPs will include the gang at Rivendell. :)

Thank you for all the reviews and support!

Author Reply: ps - Happy holidays to you too!

Butterbur never, never learns...*sighs*

Loved Aragorn in this, along with his banter. :)

Author Reply: Thanks, Cal! I'm glad you enjoyed the story... and yeah, I don't know that Butterbur ever really learned, until King Elessar showed up asking for some ale. *g*

Thanks again for all the reviews!

I enjoyed this to the end! Even though i felt in my old bones that the Southron would reappear, your twist on it really surprised me. I enjoy your Rangers, and hope to have Ferdinand return in another adventure.

Author Reply: Thank you, BeeGee! I'm glad despite expecting it, that Southron still caught you by surprise. I do think Ferdinand will show up again someday.

Thanks for all the reviews!

So, what to say in the end? I love humour, hope and bitter tones in the last chapter, you made a good combination of all that. And for the whole story... more or less, I've already told you everything - I LOVE your writing style, characters and characterization. Your characters - both OC's and canon ones - are much better than so many characters in so many published books.
Thank you for this wonderful story.

P.s. We want more Ferdinand and especially Denlad. *sweet puppy look*

Author Reply: Thank you, Ellynn! Fear not... there will *definitely* be more Denlad and highly likely that we'll see Ferdinand again. I doubt I can leave Ferdinand truly behind... he'd likely just wander back after the Rangers, knowing him! I'm honored that you rate my OCs as highly or higher than ones in published books--I do try to aim for that level of development, to the best of my ability. Thanks again for the reviews and the support!

Two other customers had joined him and stared up at him with suspicion darkening their eyes. He thought then of Ferdinand Took, of his many small kindnesses and encouraging words and selfless bravery

What a great story, full of suspense, humor, hope, and lovely h/c. Denlad and Halbarad are wonderful characters in your hands.

I suspect that it's the small moments, like meeting Ferdinand, that contribute towards Aragorn holding to his lonely, difficult path.

Author Reply: Thank you, shirebound! I'm so glad you liked the story and how I handle the characters. I just love playing with these folks... it's nice to hear that others enjoy it as well. :) I do think you're right in that it was those small kindnesses that tipped the scales at times in Aragorn's life between staying on the path and chucking it all and heading back to Rivendell.

Thank you for all the support you've given this story and for the reviews!

I would still like to know who it was who sent these Southrons here after Aragorn, and how they knew what signs to seek to know him, for it is obvious he was their primary target. And an excellent introduction to the capabilities of Hobbits meeting Ferdinand had proved. Yes, I do believe it would be very wise for him to get himself back to the Tooklands! Heh!

Wonderful story!

Author Reply: Thanks, Larner! I'm glad you enjoyed the story... and I actually am with you in wishing to know who sent the spies, but at this time in the storyline, it's more than likely they never did find out who. It can be frustrating if this weren't a gapfiller fic... but as a gapfiller, where the reader does know how it all turns out, the tension of leaving the characters a bit in the dark to me is rather fascinating to play with.

And yes, our Ferdinand needs to stay home where it's safe... although I do wonder how much to heart Ferdinand will take Aragorn's wise counsel!

Thanks for the review!
