Face of the Enemy  by Linaewen 15 Review(s)

Oops! The situation is frightening and tense. I am with Gondorian soldiers and THE brothers with all my heart.

Speaking of heart, I like your description of Harad people. I like when things are not described black/white, and your writing is great: the enemy is not a heartless and mindless beast, but people with their own hopes and ideals; the only problem is that they are not aware of being deceived by evil leader.

Of course I want Gondorians to win this battle, but at the same time I am not indifferent for the other side. You did a great job!

I find I admire Heera. She recognizes the cost in lives and wounds and maiming, while her father and the rest of the warriors see it only in terms of land taken, slaves and booty to be garnered, and increased power and prestige.

I hope they do beware of this other warlord.

As for Boromir--here he is at his strongest!

Nice to see the two brothers sticking together, even if their father fails to recognize Faramir's contributions as strongly or well as those of Boromir.

A beautiful view of all they hold dear, and a necessary conversation between the two of them.

I really like the atmosphere in the chapter: the bond between brothers is so special. And later, you switch to darker tones very smoothly. I am really curious about what Denethor saw in the palantir. :)

P.s. Just a small comment related to physics (now this is an astronomer speaking, not the LotR fan any more :) ). Yes, I know that Tolkien mentioned something about seeing the sea from Mindoluin. But I think this is not possible. I have to check in some books - there is the formula for calculating the visible horizon depending on the position of the observer (the heigth above sea level). If you are curious and want to know more about it, I can send you an e-mail with more details. ;)

Author Reply: I would love to know more about that kind of formula! I think I might have seen something like that online, in my attempts to discover if it really was possible to see such a distance. I do like to have things be true-to-life if possible, so I am interested in anything you can share with me on that score.

Do you need my email or is there a way to send mail via this website?

Thanks for reading and reviewing!
