The World Below the Mists  by Thundera Tiger 12 Review(s)
CalenharnReviewed Chapter: 1 on 12/11/2009
This is a wonderful, thoughtful story. I loved that it was told from Glorfindel's point of view; no one else in Imladris would have been so affected by the news of the Balrog. I loved the interaction between Glorfindel and the Eagle, too. (Just how *does* one respond to such an opening as the Eagle gave?) And also all of the tip-toeing around that matter of which it was forbidden to speak...

The thought of Narya in the Balrog's clutches is surely dismal - though to be honest I would fear the thought of Narya in Sauron's clutches (so to speak) more. (Of course, if the Balrog joined up with Sauron... *shiver*)

I liked also the little object lesson Erestor had for Glorfindel. Glorfindel was dismayed at the (over)use of Nenya and Vilya, yet Erestor pointed out quite effectively that Glorfindel was too dependent on foresight.

All around a wonderful story.

Author Reply: Thank you so much for the review! I'm glad you liked the Glorfindel perspective. The original plans for the story called for Erestor to have the POV, but the more I worked it, the more I realized that I needed Glorfindel. The switch added in the scene with the eagle (Landroval originally came straight to Elrond) but made Erestor much more of a minor character. I think that change was worth it, though. Besides, Erestor did get to point out the hope he saw on the mountain's peak, so I'm glad you liked that part. It was one of the last things added to be added to the story. Thanks again!

I rejoice I am not the only one who realized that had Gandalf survived the fall from the Bridge, so would have the Balrog, as both in the book did so and climbed the stairs to the top of Zirak Zigal. And the thought of Narya within the Balrog's hands.... (SHUDDERING!)

Well done!

Author Reply: Thank you for the review, Larner! I'm glad the thought of Narya falling into the Balrog's hands made you shudder. That idea was the basis for most of the story, and I really wanted to make sure that I wasn't the only one who thought that such a development might be a bad idea. Thanks again!
