The Sell-sword and the Prince  by Lady Bluejay 58 Review(s)

You capture the brutality of warfare well. Imrahil's men kill when they have to too, but their prince, at least, draws the line at harming children. Go, Imrahil!

Author Reply: Well, my Imrahil has to be honourable. And his compassion will be put to the test.LBJ

Nasty cliffhanger - in more ways than one! :) I'm glad Imrahil and Thorongil were able to talk out their differences. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Author Reply: LoL. I never thought of it as a real 'cliffhanger' until a couple of people mentioned it.LBJ

Hi LBJ -

I like how you've left us with a true cliff hanger--Imrahil and his cohorts practically hanging off a cliff. You move the story along well with physical challenges for Imrahil and his men and engaging descriptions of ship board life. The character moments between Imrahil and Thorongil were well drawn, though I wonder if Imrahil is 100 percent on Thorongil's side as of yet? I'm sure we'll find out soon.

Author Reply: Thanks.

We have to leave room for a little doubt. Imrahil will need to be convinced. LBJ

I really like the detailed sense you give of understanding sailing and tactics, not to mention the relationship of men fighting along side one another.

Author Reply: I do know a lot about sailing - but not much about tactics, so I am glad it sounded OK. I can only say it's an enjoyable challenge to write, LBJ

I like reading about a younger Imrahil here and especially enjoy his easy rapport with Thorongil and with a younger Sergion. I'm looking forward to more action in the next chapter.

Author Reply: The action starts in the next chapter and continues for a few more - so I hope you enjoy, Thanks for taking the time to review. LBJ

Lady Bluejay, I am rubbing my hands together with glee after reading the first chapter of your story. A pre-Ring War story starring Imrahil in his youth, Aragorn, Denethor--the mind boggles. These are some of my favorite Tolkien characters, and you've gotten them off to an excellent start. I'm eager to read your next chapter.

BTW, you use the term "sell-sword." The author George R.R. Martin uses that term in his series "A Song of Ice and Fire." Have you ever read "A Game of Thrones" and the other books in that series? If so, did you know that HBO/BBC are creating a miniseries based on those books, starring Sean Bean and Jennifer Ehle? I'm so excited.

And I am quite excited about your new story.

Author Reply: Hi Stefania.

I do hope you enjoy the rest of the story - thanks a lot for reviewing.

I don't know the books at all, but have now looked them up. Will order the first one to read and see how I get on. Anything with Sean Bean in is usually good - so I shall look forward to that. LBJ

I like the spirit Imrahil shows here, and the self-awareness. And he's shrewd, which is good. It can be difficult to write two strong characters in the same story without shorting one of them, but this is nicely done.

Author Reply: Thanks - there will be more about Imrahil but I hope I have done justice to Thorongil as well. I always write my grown up Imrhails much the same - enigmatic and strong, so I had to reflect that for his youth. LBJ

I'm looking forward to following this one, LBJ. A young man having to follow a mercenary doesn't sound comfortable--but I suspect Captain Thorongil will surprise him!

Author Reply: Well, I have always had this feeling that they must have met before - because Imrahil - Gondor's highest vassal - accepted Aragorn's claim as king so quickly.

There just had to be a story in it.

Thanks for reviewing.LBJ
