In Darkness Bound  by Fiondil 11 Review(s)
AzureSkyeReviewed Chapter: 84 on 6/20/2011
I've decided the only good thing about getting up this morning was reading this. Its a very interesting chapter, and one that's hard to wrap my head about for some reason. It surprised me to see Namo taking such a role with Arafinwe, is that because he has the most experience with this sort of thing, or is it because he's too much fun to leave out of the story? :) I do have a question on your use of thralldom, is it a common practice in your version of eldarin society, or is it mainly used for punishment? If so, where did the practice start? Arafinwe's protection of Glorfindel in EI is making more sense now...did you already know that this is what happened, or is this a later idea? Rereading this review, its just a bunch of questions....But it was a lovely chapter, and I'm waiting with impatience for friday...'cause Arafinwe's going to rebel sometime. After all, he burns Nienna's cottage down. LOL.

Author Reply: Hi AzureSkye. Well, I'm glad I provided you with a purpose for getting out of bed this morning. *grin* And Námo is involved because, as you've guessed, he's too much fun to leave out and his own background (as it's described in "Wars of the Valar") allows him certain insights that Manwë may not have.

As for the concept of thralldom... I do not hold that it was ever a common practice among the Eldar, yet I take my cue from Fëanor's accusation against the Valar about the Elves being their thralls. I'm sure he meant it metaphorically rather than literally, but who really knows. And of course, we know that some Elves did end up becoming thralls to Morgoth and Sauron, so the concept is there. In Arafinwë's case, he's taking Fëanor's accusation literally and is acting accordingly.

As for this part of the story concerning Arafinwë, I actually had a backstory with Arafinwë becoming Manwë's 'thrall'. It was actually the germ of this present story, which I greatly expanded to include more than just Arafinwë's story of what happened after he returned to Tirion.

And we will see in the next chapter how the Valar plot to get Arafinwë to rebel. I hope you find it amusing.

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I really appreciate it.
