Till We Have Faces  by Antane 148 Review(s)

It is good for both of them to know this respite before the final confrontation. Thank you!

Author Reply: Yes, very good. They did it, especially Frodo. I don't know how it will go for him as he returns to the Fire. I thought I did but now I don't. It may be more hopeful than I originally thought because of the strengthening he is receiving here, a chapter I did not know I was going to write until it started and just came out.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

I wonder if somewhere deep down, he also had a vague feeling of what would be asked of him and so sought to find out more ways to strengthen himself and found walking under starlight the best way to do that.

I love the marvelous insights and speculations in this story. They make me think.

Author Reply: Le hannon, my dear! You are most kind. I read recently thoughts of others about Frodo's trip West and that it was not just because he was tormented so much by PTSD but needful for the Elven nature of his soul to be there. I have no idea if Frodo really did have these thoughts as Bilbo speculates. We know Bilbo himself did as Gandalf muses in The Quest of Erebor. But Bilbo knows his lad better than any of us could so it could well be. I like how much he himself has grown spiritually from his contact with Elves. Hobbits really are amazing creatures. :)

To walk to such a death open-eyed was such a great feat, one whose full worth he still cannot appreciate, unfortunately. I rejoice he is not alone now, even as he was never alone then, either.

Author Reply: It was indeed. How many of us could do that? I hope he will realize his worth in the end. That's what I think will happen.

It just occurred to me that Frodo was reduced to seeing only a ring of fire before him, that all else was blotted out, except for the knowledge that Sam was there by his side, or bearing him up, all the way.

I'm glad Boromir is able to offer his heartfelt support and understanding.

Author Reply: Glad to hear back from you, Lindelea! The Ring met its match in Sam as far as a powerful force in Frodo's life, even though it overcome even him in the decision to go West. Scary that the damage done was so deep that not even Sam's love could heal it. Only the Chooser of Frodo could do that. But yes, he is here bereft of all else but not Sam - yea!

I knew I could not part with the Ring. I knew that even before I began.

What a realization to have, and to travel with for so many months and so many miles. Your writing brings me a new realization of this inner and outer struggle, and courageous resistance.

Author Reply: Le hannon, my dear! I knew I wanted to get into Frodo's head at this moment but did not prepare anything ahead of time, just let the story tell itself. So sad but gives you even more admiration for his endurance of that hell.

Oh, I'm glad he was able to look Galadriel in the eye at the end. This was a healing conversation for Boromir as well!

This is a good thought to contemplate:
Our lad was always given the guardians he needed at the times he needed them.

Author Reply: I'm glad too! I'm impressed and touched that his love for Frodo and wish to do whatever he could to help him heal was enough to overcome his anxiety and receive some healing himself. I knew I wanted to do something with the two of them but Boromir wasn't the only one nervous. I didn't mind being around her but wondering if the words coming from her were right.

What a lovely chapter, so filled with wisdom. And this is quite interesting:

Frodo has received a wonderful and terrible gift for one of his kind: a share in our memory, grief and wonder. ... Frodo has received this blessing from the Powers, so his cherished memories are always before him to comfort him

Author Reply: Le hannon, my dear! I am glad that you enjoyed it. :) I have done little writing with Galadriel so was rather nervous about doing her but I wanted Boromir to have some contact with her.

Once again a song has brought him the companion he needs at the moment. And the Lady's light has indeed saved him once more.

Author Reply: I liked the idea of a song too. And the Light too. Le hannon!

Oh my, this chapter is heartbreaking, but so exquisitely written. You take us into the depths with Frodo, and back outwards to the light. I appreciate how you wove Frodo's experience with Sam into his experience with Boromir.

there was little he could do but raise his voice to join the song.

I find this line truly beautiful. It speaks for our lives as well, doesn't it?

Author Reply: Le hannon, my dear! Glad you enjoyed it. I think sometimes it must take great strength to sing amidst such ruin. I liked the way it came out here, so close to the hell it might have been for Frodo at that time, but also the loving presence of a rescuer also. I hope to continue that theme of past and present mingling.

Oh, yes, the "You are a greater hero than anyone else!" argument. Heh! But they must pass the tower to reach the mountain, after all. I'm glad he's not having to face it alone.

Author Reply: Me too. :) I fear it will not be an easy time and the Fire will be the worst, but it will a little help from friends, mortal and otherwise, will be wonderful. Yes, the never ending argument appears again and Sam is not here to refute Frodo's words about not being a hero so Boromir must. :)

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
