Christmas at Edhellond: An Elf Academy Tale  by Fiondil 19 Review(s)

Oh, it's over, sniffle! I want more!

The Sword Ceremony was beautifully done, Findalure's statement that he wasn't ready does prove that he is. Loved Dereks comment to him to stop sniveling!

So Glorfindel finally gets to deliver his Letters to Finrod, hey, that would make a good title for a set of stories about life in Middle Earth after the Great Ice Age. (Yeah, as if you need more Bunnies, that cage must be getting over crowded, time to weed out a few!)

Waiting for E.A. 3.

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Hi Lynda. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter and the story. And I'm doing my best to weed out the hutch, but I can only do what I can do. Obviously I'll never run out of ideas at this rate. *grin* Anyway, thanks for your comments. The've been much appreciated.

I need Finrod, so I can start weeping in his embrace as well. Beautiful Foindil, just perfect.
It was a nice surprise that the two of them didn't fight about Finrod decision to tell Derek and Alex parents, those two were fighting too much and they really need to start working together. Very touching the scene of Glorfindel's letters
And glad that we have a sequel. EA3, Hurrah!
Thank you.

Author Reply: Wouldn't we all like that, Fantasia? LOL! I guess now that the air's cleared a bit Glorfindel and Finrod are being a bit more realistic about their relationship and not have certain expectations about each other. We'll see how this goes when we get to EA3. Thanks for all your reviews, Fantasia. I've appreciated and enjoyed every one of them.

I suspect too that it is time to recognize the growing maturity of the three lads, now that they are beginning to listen and think clearly. And love the letters that Glorfindel has prepared for his brother. Delightful end to the tale!

Author Reply: Thanks, Larner. I'm glad you enjoyed this and I appreciate all your reviews.

And to all a good night.

I almost teared up at Glorfindel's gift. Of course he would have thought about Finrod all the time, but deciding to write things down and having the dedication to keep up with it for literally Ages...what a friendship they have. It's so good to see them reunited, both physically and now, it seems, spiritually.

I like Anne. She must be a remarkable woman. I'm sure she and Alex have a lot of catching up to do. I hope they're able to strengthen their relationship through the big reveal that's coming in EA3, and same with Derek and his dad. It was good to see how much the Three Amigos have grown in such a short time. I'm glad they have their swords back.

What a lovely addition to the EA 'verse this has been, Fiondil! Thank you so much for the beautiful Christmas gift. :) I'm eagerly anticipating EA3 whenever you get around to it, and I'm dearly looking forward to seeing what this new multi-chapter endeavor you're soon to post is going to be about! Any hints as to time period, focus, etc, or do we have to wait till Monday to find out? ;) Discovering your writing has been good for my soul, dude. You make me anticipate Mondays...that in itself is a miracle!

I've been browsing back through your other stories, most notably Elf, Interrupted, and came across the chapter where Finrod comes to grips with never being allowed to come back to Middle-Earth again. I know they're not entirely the same reality, precisely. But all the same, juxtaposing that Finrod with this one, I can't even imagine what his reaction must have been when he was told he was coming back and reuniting with Glorfindel. To be a fly on that wall...!

Also, this completely doesn't belong here, and it's a silly question, but I can't help asking...in EIf, Interrupted where the Valar are discussing genetics, what language did you imagine them using to describe things like DNA and mitochondria? Are they using words in their own language, are they making up corresponding words on the fly in Sindarin or Quenya...are they "cheating" and using English words that hadn't actually been invented yet at that point? *giggle*

Have a great weekend and thanks again.

-Kevana

PS: Here is a video of parakeets running in slow motion. http://youtu.be/Tw7WIsXHkuI

Author Reply: Hi Kevana. To answer your question first, the Valar were speaking Valarin when using the scientific terms that made no sense to the Elves. Of course, I have no idea what that would've sounded like, since we have only bits and pieces of the language. Being the scientists that they are, they would've had words in their own langauge and wouldn't need to "cheat". *grin*

Glorfindel's letters to Finrod are mentioned in EA2 and it made sense for him to give them to Finrod now that he was there to read them. I'm sure Finrod will be spending many an evening poring over the letters.

I'm glad you like Anne. We don't see much of her here but I think her personality comes through loud and clear. I'm sure she and Alex will have much to discuss once she learns the truth.

FInrod in the Elf, Interrupted series says that he would not go any further east than Tol Eressëa UNLESS the Valar bid him to. I imagine that when he made that statement he thought it was a fairly good bet that they wouldn't so I think he was both shocked and pleased when they asked him to go and lead the first group back.

Anyway, thanks for reviewing and I'm glad you enjoyed this story and look forward to EA3. And thanks for the parakeet thing. Too funny.

Nice finish - this was really a good place for this particular story to end. :) And it certainly leaves the way open for EA3!
Nice to see Anne flirting with Glorfindel and Finrod - she doesn't seem completely stunned by their gorgeousness as you have described some women to be. And I also liked the way she compared notes about pregnancy with the ellith. I'm sure she would fit right in in Wiseman and with the Elves! (That little chat means that this story passes the Bechdel test, too.)
And speaking about flirting, do I smell an upcoming romance between Alex and Nell?
Anne definitely seems like an interesting character. And when she has gotten the Big Reveal - and recovered from it enough to think straight again - I'm sure she will soon realize that here she has a house full of sitting ducks, full of information about what _really happened_ throughout history - and I'm sure she won't be shy about grilling them! And if she does decide to move to Wiseman, I am sure she could be very useful when integrating new arrivals into mortal society. She is a teacher, after all, and she could as easily tutor Elves as work with mortal children.
The little ceremony with the swords was very nice, and the fact that the youngsters felt that they aren't ready yet for the responsibility to have the swords, shows that they have acquired enough maturity to be trusted with them.

Author Reply: Hi Sunny. I thought it was a good place for this story to end and we'll pick up EA3 where this one leaves off. I'm glad you find Anne an interesting character. I think she's a hoot and you're right that as a teacher she would be a great asset to the Elves. I'm glad you also liked the sword ceremony and the three ellyn have certainly matured in a short amount of time, probably because they see Mortals who are only in their twenties and thirties being given the respect of adults by the older Elves and realize thay have some catching up to do. Anyway, thanks for your reviews. They're much appreciated.

Thought of this after I finished the first review and read the other comments. You have a habit, knowingly or not, of tossing out tidbits of stories that should be told. Glorfindel's letters would make a great series of short stories. His studies under Thomas Aguinas are one example that we know.

Anyway, know that I am eagerly, but not impatiently, waiting EA3. Had I not had this wonderful Christmas story, I would have been frantic for reading. With deep appreciation and love.

Author Reply: Hi again UTfrog. Another author referred to those kinds of tidbit as "red slippers" in reference to a Sherlock Holmes story in which Watson mentions a case involving a red slipper. You never learn the details of the case, you only know there was one, but the mention of it provides historical depth and that is what I do here with my red slippers. We will probsbly never learn the details about things, we only know that they occurred and that they somehow help shape a certain person's character. But, you never know. The Muse may decide some of these red slippers deserve to be told in their entirety. In the meantime, I hope to tackle EA3 later this year after I've completed a couple of other multchapter writing projects, one of which will be available for reading beginning on Monday, so keep your eyes open for a new story.

Wonderful ending to this story! Whenever and wherever you go with EA3, this tale is a wonderful bridge. You did a great job with the sword ceremony. The Three Amigos do deserve their swords for all the maturity they have gained. Your gift exchange is perfect for a large gathering of friends. Glorfindel's letters were the perfect last touch. I do think that Finrod now understands so much more. Again, thank you so very much.

Author Reply: Hi UTfrog. I'm glad you liked the ending and the sword ceremony and everything else that happened in this chapter. I enjoyed writing this story and I thank you for giving me the inspiration and I thank you for your reviews. I appreciated each and every one of them.

I am greatly saddened that this story is finished. I will have to continue reading it until the third part of Elf Academy is published! I had hoped to see the Elves reveal themselves to Anne and Andy in this tale, but i am sure you had your reasons for not doing so. I have recently started learning to speak in the manner of mortals, so the next time I review, I will not sound as formal as this! Namarie, mellon nin.

Author Reply: Hi Ilya. There are a couple of reasons why I did not show the "Reveal" here. For one thing, that deserves its own chapter and for another, I had a specific goal in mind when I began writing this: describing Finrod's state of mind after being shot and his struggle to reclaim his joy and, of course, the ceremony surrounding the swords, which was the original impetus for the story. Elf Academy 3 will pick up where this one leaves off (more or less). Thanks for reading and reviewing. It's much appreciated.

I have really enjoyed this story Fiondil - and will now be waiting impatiently for Elf Academy 3. It was interesting watching Finrod discover what Christmas means - and I have to admit I am now waiting to see Anne & Andy's reaction to the 'Great Reveal'

The way the swords were given back was so appropriate but I can just see Anne & Andy's mystification about why there were swords. Looking forwrad to seeing this story go forward now.

Author Reply: Hi Arwen. I'm so glad you enjoyed this story and I'm glad you found that the way the swords were given back was appropriate. Anne and Andy are certain mystified, but when all is explained to them, perhaps they will understand better. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it very much.
