More Than Meets the Eye  by shirebound 40 Review(s)

A wonderful blend of movie- and book-verse Balin here. He was right not to dismiss the apparent youth of their reluctant host, but if Thorin underestimates Bilbo somewhat, Balin overestimates him.

Author Reply: Balin showed his confidence in Bilbo -- or at least not as much suspicion of him -- several times in The Hobbit -- such as when he was the only dwarf willing to enter the mountain with Bilbo through the hidden door -- and it was fun to anticipate that a bit.

Again, such a vivid glimpse at the natures of both Bilbo and Thorin.

Author Reply: Thank you so much for reviewing here as well. I really enjoyed expanding on this scene.

“Of course he would not be entirely honest. He is a burglar, after all.”

LOL! He is indeed a little misled, but he does his best to convince Thorin that Bilbo is the right person for the job. From my POV Balin was from the beginning on Bilbo's best friend among the dwarves.

PS: Happy belated birthday to you and many happy returns :-)

Author Reply: Thank you, Andrea. What a joy that no matter how many birthdays come and go, I continue to be inspired by hobbits. And to have folks with whom to share these wee tales... that's the best part of all.

Balin does seem very supportive of Bilbo in the book, and it was fun to expand on that a little bit.

I enjoyed listening in on this conversation between Balin and Thorin. It's interesting hearing their thoughts on Mr. Baggins. I'm glad you are continuing on with this.

Author Reply: You'd be amazed at how many of my stories were written by "listening in on conversations". I'm really pleased you're enjoying these snippets. *beams*

I really like this little scene. Balin was my favorite dwarf and I always knew that he was fond of Bilbo, but to see him so supportive, if a little misguided, in the face of Thorin's doubts is wonderful.

Author Reply: Thank you. I really like Balin as well; he seems very wise and kind.

Ooooo, I love this gift of sight that Thorin has. Very interesting! And it's such fun to think of Bilbo as so young and just starting his adventures. Great beginning!

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm only writing small stories now, but they bring me just as much joy as the longer ones.

Oh, I like this glimpse of Bilbo through Thorin's true seeing. True seeing, indeed, truer than even Bilbo knows! (Though obviously Gandalf knows...) (Is 'true seeing' canon or fanon? It's been awhile since I read up on the dwarves.)

Author Reply: Thank you. The 'true seeing' as a gift of the royal line of Durin is my own invention.

Whoohoo! Another story from you! This promises to be very interesting. Love the descriptions in this chapter and Thorin's thought process as he rethinks Bilbo's worth. Looking forward to more, Shirebound. Getting to read another tale from you is definitely the highlight of my week so far.

Author Reply: What a lovely compliment! Your kind comments really made my day, and I'm so pleased you like this premise. I enjoy getting into the heads of these characters.

Very nice! That must have been one of the first times when Bilbo's Tookish side suddenly took hold of him. It is good that Thorin was aware of it, too.

Author Reply: Thank you! I love seeing hobbits through the eyes of other races. I'm looking forward to writing additional scenes.
