At Tharbad's Greenway Spring Faire  by Dreamflower 72 Review(s)

What a sweet little story!

"Biggest Brother" is a likely name among cats as it indicates the position among the other cats. And our "Biggest Brother" lives up to his name.

I also like the name Elanor gave the cat. And of course it has to do with food, what else ;-)

Author Reply: Thank you! And that was my reasoning exactly for his "cat" name!

Elanor, like Pippin before her, names her animals after food!

I love that rough draft from Bilbo! It's nice to know he has to go through these as any scribe. I wonder if there are any of Frodo's around? :)

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: I think all poets must go through that process of getting the words just right!

My Frodo didn't write very much poetry until after he'd been living in Aman for several years.

Frodo the gardener appears before Frodo Gardner :) Gotta love it and Bilbo's words to the Gaffer when he first notices what Frodo is doing.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Yep. Well, he kind of knew that's what Frodo would be doing, didn't he? I'm sure it forestalled the Gaffer's planned complaint!

Hurrah for Frodo! Children pay attention to the most wonderful things, don't they? I wonder how old he was when he watched the process in his old home?

Delightful, from the birthday present, to the gaffer twisting his hat in his hands, and everything in between.

Author Reply: Probably when he was quite young, maybe even before he lost his parents. But certainly once he became Saradoc's ward, he would have helped to do it, since Old Rory was a firm believer that no one is exempt from hard work. In my 'verse, Frodo has done all sorts of chores around Buckland whenever they needed all hands to help.

I'm so glad you liked it!

Frodo certainly does a fine job! I wonder who taught him--Sam?

Author Reply: Nope. In my 'verse, Brandybucks all pitch in during planting and harvest, even the Master's family. Frodo has weeded gardens, harvested apples, and certainly helped with various crops. Old Rory believes the best way to oversee someone else doing something is to know how to do it yourself. While Frodo's not going to usually be helping in the garden in Hobbiton, doesn't mean he doesn't know how.

Sam would not know how to plant corn, since the Gaffer never did it. But he knows all about it NOW, LOL!

Lovely conversation! I'm so glad that Merry and Sam were able to continue their friendship. Good on the Brandybucks!

(I imagine it would be the people like Lobelia who's be scandalised.)

Author Reply: Oh, Lobelia, for certain, though she'd maliciously just use it to bolster her already formed prejudice against Brandybucks.

I think I've told you many times, I've always envisioned the Brandybucks as less formal and hidebound to social conventions than the rest of the Shire.

Yes! I always wondered if what Hal saw was an Entwife. (Or maybe an Ent, looking for the Entwives...)

Author Reply: I was on the fence until I started writing the prompt--and then suddenly it came to me that it was an Entwife!

Someone needs to be hasty and tell Treebeard she was sighted - quick!

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Well, no one from the Shire has met Treebeard yet--and I don't think Merry and Pippin overheard that particular conversation.

I read another fanfiction story in which Hal's sighting of a tree turned out to be a possible Ent-wife; it was written by SlightlyTookish. That would be a happy ending for the Ents, if the Ent-wives all turned out to be in the Shire!

Author Reply: I've seen a few--I'll have to check and see if I've read that one before. Probably, since I think I've read all of hers.

Yeah, some else who thinks Hal's moving tree had something to think with the Entwives! I recall when reading LOTR for the first time, I kept hoping we would find out something about them residing somewhere near the Shire.

Author Reply: Well, I certainly think that it may have been one.

That's just one of the loose ends I think JRRT left on purpose (so "other hands and minds" could play with them!) ;^D
