At Tharbad's Greenway Spring Faire  by Dreamflower 72 Review(s)

I agree with the other reviewer, this is getting scary! Knowing that this will be the "Battle of Greenfields", and recognizing the names of Bullroarer Took, and the name of the Goblin chief, I know that this should eventually end well for the Hobbits. The good part will be in seeing how you get them there! And, how will things turn out for our brave Ranger? This gives us a chance to fill in the gaps which our Good Professor left in his version of the tale.

Author Reply: Yes, to one who knows the Tale of Years, this bit of Shire history is fairly well-known.

I hope that you like how the story is turning out.

This is getting scary, and too near the Shire for comfort! I hope he gets to deliver his warning, and I hope somebody takes care of his wound, poor Hirluin. And Belan is such a brave and sweet horse, helping him get on his back when he is too sick to do so.

But I hope somebody from among the Dunedain, or from Rivendell, comes to the rescue of the Shire!!!

Author Reply: It's way too near the Shire!

Hirluin gets his care, as you have seen. I must confess that Belan is partly inspired by Aragorn's horse in movie-verse, who seemed a remarkably intelligent and brave horse.

I think you may be surprised at how the Shire is rescued!

Very nice!

I especially like "old stories are more than mere whispers". Maybe Bilbo used it in another poem?

Why am I not surprised that the "furrin" food comes from Buckland ;-)

I think the Old Gaffer should really make a trip to Buckland to find out how they really live there.

Frodo already showed him that Bucklanders are very good with growing maize.

(P.S.: The German word for maize is "Mais". Very similar.)

Oooh, I like it! I'll be waiting eagerly for Part II.

Author Reply: I'm woefully behind in answering my reviews here! Thanks, dear! ((hugs))

Not just an Ent-wife, but Fimbrethil! Wow! And no-one believed Hal, except for Sam.

At least there is still hope that some day Treebeard might find Fimbrethil again.

Author Reply: Yes, there is hope!

"Sam's a good lad, and I am pleased that he and Merry get on. I think he's a good example for Merry." This made the Gaffer blink.

Thank God the Gaffer is not as stubborn as Lobelia concerning "standards". Otherwise a great friendship would never have started to form.

Author Reply: Well, the Gaffer still might prefer that his son stick to his "own", but with Bilbo's encouraging the friendship as well as Merry's father having no objections, he doesn't really think he can nay-say it.

Nicely done! I love seeing Bilbo's first draft of the rhyme. Thank you for finding it for us.

Author Reply: I'm very glad I could have done so! I am sure there are other copies of Bilbo's work in Rivendell.

Delightful! I suspect that the Gaffer will soon make himself into the local expert on ears 'n cobs.

Author Reply: I would imagine so. I don't suppose that subsequent plots of corn will have to be tended solely by Frodo! 8^D

Another great little story! I have never thought about that similarity in Frodo's and Elrond's lives, but you are quite right!

"Had I a silver penny for every time I heard the phrase 'Frodo is the finest hobbit in the Shire' over the years, my coffers would overflow!"

Very true :-)

Author Reply: I never had either until I saw the prompt; I had thought about Elrond and Bilbo, though.

I imagine Bilbo spent a lot of time bragging about Frodo, LOL!
