| Welcome back. Wingman Glorfindel next to The Wrath of Elrond makes my heart go pitter-patter. I can't believe this foolish ranger... what will happen to him? And will Dorhaur find any useful intel? Gosh, you've created such a plausible, interesting, unique scenario here that I hope you consider some related fic! Author Reply: Baradhald definitely had some self-control issues ... he hasn't learned that bluster isn't always best. :-P It's interesting ... | Welcome Back PSW, I was happy to see your story continue and I do indeed understand about real life getting in the way. I am really loving Dorhaur, his description on his superiors mental state is priceless, lol from "foolish" to "insane". Although I do have to admire Baradhald's gumption, to spout nonsense while having Glorifindel's grip around one's throat may well be a sign of mental instability. You've written a great character Author Reply: I know, I was actually thinking that as well -- it's either very brave, very stupid, or very insane to keep at it with Glorfindel and Elrond looming over a person like that ... :-) Thanks so much for your comments, I really appreciate them! | |

| It's always a pleasure to see a nasty character get what's coming to him. I personally wouldn't want to have Elrond pinning me to a rock and demanding an explanation of my actions. I admit, though, that I can see how Baradhald's theory makes a kind of twisted sense. It's problem is a fundamental lack of trust of Elrond and his people. If you don't have that, the whole chieftain arrangement ceases to make sense. Dorhaur will have his work cut out for him. I liked the way you showed the reactions and relationships of everyone in that scene even though most of the time the other characters are in the background. That's tough to do with a multi-character scene. You know them so well, though, that you let us know them too. Author Reply: Right ... it makes sense, sort of ... if you have a suspicious mind and a chip on your shoulder ... :-P I'm glad the various characters worked well in the scene, thanks for commenting on that! It was a bit of a struggle for me to decide how to work them all in so that they weren't forgotten, but also not belabor every little reaction. I'm happy to hear it worked out! | Well, it's out in the open now, and there is much to learn about how deep this dissent may go. I am glad it is Dorhaur who will plumb that depth, I find. But Baradhald has a good deal to learn about self-control, as he doesn't appear much practiced in the skill. Author Reply: That is definitely one of Baradhald's major problems -- and why he's more of a liability than an asset to his allies (and why I suspect they tolerate rather than welcome him to the cause). They will certainly have cause to rue his involvement in the near future ... Thanks so much as always for your comments! | |

| I know how intensely 'real life' can intrude on our tale-telling. Thank you for continuing the story. “They are not your family, Elf.” He couldn't be more wrong! It's good that Elrond is finding out about all this resentment, and that Estel has champions among Men as well as among Elves. Author Reply: Yes to both -- they are his family (definitely), and Estel will certainly need support from his own people not only now, but when he comes to the Chieftaincy. It will be good for him to have a little bit of a base outside of his own kin early ... Thanks so much as always for your comments! | |

| As calm as Elrond seems to be (most of the time) I suspect that having his wrath directed at you would be quite intimidating. And frightening or upsetting one of his children would certainly be a trigger. I always did have sympathy for the Dunedain since most of them did not know what had happened to him. The years of thinking the line of Elendil/Isildur had ended could not have been happy ones. ButBaraldhald did know and was not thinking of the big picture. Author Reply: Sorry for the delay in response! I didn't realize I hadn't done so yet ... Yes, I imagine that it was a stressful time for the Dunedain people as a whole, and there would have been the potential for various power shifts as they tried to deal with the 'loss' of their Chieftain and the line of Isildur. But yes, the ones who knew had less excuse -- though they may have seen it as an opportunity of a different sort. Who knows? Real life history is littered with all sorts of situations ... And yes ... protecting one's children does tend to bring out a person's sterner side ... :-P Thanks so much for reading, and for your comments! | |

| Well, that was an exciting end! And Baradhald turns out to be even crazier than I thought. I can see how there'd be problems with no clear leadership though, if everyone thinks Aragorn is dead. And yet, how do you keep the boy safe if you let too many people know he's alive? I liked some of the small moments in this chapter too. In particular, I liked when Elrond pulls Estel farther from the edge of the cliff, and then 12-year-old Estel thinks he's not going to fall, for pity sake. Both those reactions seemed true to me. Sharing the raising of Estel must have been hard for Gilraen and Elrond. I don't know exactly what Gilraen told Estel to keep from Elrond. If it was about her, then that's her choice, though that kind of secret is a burden to put on a child. But if it was about Estel himself, then I'd be ticked off if I were her and Elrond contradicted me. She's his mother. Good chapter. Glad to see it. Author Reply: Ha! We had many of those moments while hiking when I was a kid -- my mom going 'get back!', and us going 'mom, nothing's going to happen...' :-P I imagine the raising of Estel together definitely was an interesting experience for the both of them, given that Elves and Men come from completely different places (as it were)!in so many instances. In this case, however, Gilraen definitely meant just her own experience w Baradhald -- she didn't even know about Estel's, and I don't think she would have kept that from Elrond if she did. They're there for the boys protection, after all. I suspect she didn't reslly think it through ... Anyhoo... thanks as always for reading and for your comments! | |
