· Chapter 20: A Privy Council
Yes! You must have him back - Hrassa must definitely be prevailed upon to stay. All sorts of things depend upon it. (Myself, I'd leave it to Celebrian. She's already got her hooks in. And they're barbed to prevent easy removal.)
I love Celeborn and Galadriel together. They fit like puzzle pieces. And build on each other's strengths. (And I'm not surprised Galadriel nearly went into meltdown.)
Aurthôn and Laerlínath didn't know what they were getting into with their wine-pilfering, did they? I hope they make it home before ... well. They wouldn't want to become a public scandal, now would they?
Love it.
Author's reply
Oh certainly! Rest assured that Celeborn has a plan to keep Hrassa hanging around that includes both Galadriel and Celebrian. But, restore him to his old status as a nostel? We'll see... ;)
That's the thing - Celeborn and Galadriel together. I really believe Celeborn would have turned out as a powerful elf-lord as Oropher, Thranduil, or Amdir - or Lord of Harlindon/Eriador/Eregion and ally of Gil-galad as was Cirdan - even King of Lorien himself - if Galadriel were not so glorious and the most wise among elf-women. ...or pulled him into a certain Golodhrim smith's proximity. (Tolkien makes it clear in what he has the characters say, particularly about their lifemate, that they had a strong bond and a great weakness for each other).
At least the two are wed and not just courting! :D Now, that could be scandalous!
Glad you are enjoying! Thanks for the review!

This is a wodnerful Chrsitmas gift, Redheredh! I ws missing your talented flow! :-)
I love many things in this story but I think I like mot the relaionship that you have creted for this two. This playful, changing, self possesed and talented Celeborn is an intriguing, exasperating, fascinating character, as if befits him. I love his depth and complexity, his changing moods and also how he at times aloows himself tobe less than perfect and yet in control. And galadriel is a wise woman who knows the treasure that she holds and by which she is held, and knows perfectly how their mutual bond does make each of them stronger and wiser. A perfectly matched couple, and it shows in such subtle details as their mind games and their witty exchanges, even in private.
It is clear that all Ost in Edhil, and evenm uch of middle Earth dances around them, and they know it, and are comfortable with the fact. This court comes alive so vividly and detailed, and complex that it is a sheer pleasure to follow each chapter in this long night. I am going to re read it all during this holiday.
Have a nice vacation and my best wishes for the next year, with more of this jewels to come!
Author's reply
Well, I am missing your story-telling too! :) Actually, I wanted to get this chapter out before becoming preoccupied with other activities. Else it might have been another month... *sheesh*
A perfectly matched couple, you say? I suppose they do keep it interesting for each other. But, by being less than perfect certainly! ;D The Christmas season has reminded me that Mary and Joseph were *married*. They were not august potentates in their society, but I choose to believe a less than perfect but loving couple who faced their challenges together, not just looking after each other only because they were committed to some higher purpose.
Movers and doers! You gotta respect them for their chutzpah, but also be able enjoy their foibles. I am always very pleased that you are enjoying this tale and grateful that you let me know it. The next chapter is outlined - the entire story has been outlined for some time - but needs the usual polishing. Polishing is why it takes me so long to post. Especially when one line turns into two pages. Several other outlined stories are waiting as well, plenty for years to come, if I could just get them into shape...
Ah well! A Very Merry Christmas and Fortuitous Happy New Year to you!

I loved this. And I'm so late in getting round to telling you so! Many apologies for sloth. Galadriel is such a politician ... although she might prefer the designation statesman ... but I'm glad to see that Celeborn doesn't let her get away with anything. (She could be unbearable, were she married to anybody less strong. And less devious.)
And, really, Hrassa cannot expect her to be pleased. (Although slapping him shows she's a girl with too many brothers. And I'm glad it hurt her hand.)
Lady Elrovail is to see to his every need, though? That could be scary. Though not, perhaps, with quite the potential of the morrow's tea party.
The mind talking between C&G is delightful. And revealing. Much easier to present a calm and omniscient front when you can share information in silence.
Author's reply
I am very glad you enjoyed it! Now, Galadriel has real work to do like any real princess. ;) Ha! Personally, I think she gets away with quite a bit. (As with most women in a man's world, she has learned to be somewhat devious herself. But, it is an ability Celeborn has also developed, which could be another reason why they engage each other so well.)
Hrassa most certainly would expect to apologize - whatever he did or did not do - if the Lady decided she was not in a happy mood. ;) (Yes! I think you might be right about that! When younger, she would have competed with her brothers by acting more like them. But once grown up, you would think she could become more subtle, like Elrovail. H'm, maybe that is not exactly what one would wish. Manly manners just might be better...)
Actually, Elrovail is protecting Hrassa - but still getting her own opinion across. Just like Celeborn. Really, there is not much Celebrian can do to the wood-elf except get a story out of him. I suppose, he could use the opportunity to get back a little at the little princess' parents, but he would never abuse a child's trust.
There are actually two such conversations in LOTR, while the Fellowship is in Lothlorien, which I think are revealing of their relationship and personalities. One when Galadriel, after rebuking/cajoling does not seem to be working, has to ask Celeborn to let our heroes stay. And, another after she refuses the Ring on her own, then checks in with Celeborn to let him know the Ringbearer is ready to leave and when could he meet with them all again.
Thank you so much for the review!

WEll, at last I am able to sit and review!
I really enjoyed this long-awaited chapter, but now I have found that I must re read the whle tale so I get a whole view of everyone`s movememnts. THis is so perfectly set, the structure is like a perfect choreography and they all behave like well coordinated dancers.
I loved Galadriel's pov, her playful mise en scene, and her confusin at her husbands silence. Her whole mental process i very revealing of her inner weaknessess and strengtths...and I really loved her interaction with Hrassa. She managed to make it show but also as something very private between the two of them.
And HRassa is the hero of this tale. For he surely has a tale to tell. His self assuredness in the face of the expected reproaches and grudges and yet his determination to go through each and every are reallly moving. As it was Celeborn`s pain, so subtly epresssed. Just another guest. Indeed.
YOu have managed to depict a very credible relationship for Celeborn and Galadriel, in which both are strong and weak and both know each other's points... I loved how their strong love shows along Glaariel's mental runinations and her conversations with her lord, until they so indulgently watch over Aurthon and his wife. A perfect dance of words, and details and plot line. I bow to you.
And you have me intrigued with the prophecy and the reborn hero! :-)
Author's reply
Thank you, Perelleth! Heaven knows I love the feedback you give me! Because you are so positive and generous.
Actually, there is nothing complicated about Hrassa's tale. He may get around to talking about it someday. But, if he is anything, he is brave and looks to certin high-elves for inspiration.
I glad you think C&G interact in a credible way. They are certainly not afraid to argue with one another - about anything. I was not sure about using Galadriel's pov at first, but she opened up eventually. I am glad you liked their conversation because there is more of that to come... eventually.
Now, canonically, Galadriel became aware of an evil growing in the East when in Lindon. It was one of the reasons they left there. I just thought she might also know that a another golden elf was determined to make it *back* to Ennor for he felt he was not released from his duty either. ;)
Thank you again for the kind review!

I was sure that I had not had the time to review this, for I remember that I read it on an airport...and have been running around since then!
I loved the opening section. I was expecting Galadriel, but Mirathel´s mise en scene was hilarious...and a sharp contrast in all her playful behaviour to the shock that awaited her...I really like the way you showed her, because for many chapters we have been seeing differnt reactions to Hrassa´s return, and I think that this one is the more honest, in the sense that it is the one that really let us know how deeply Hrassa´s absence must have been felt by all the rest, even if only MIrathel expressed it so openly. NOw you have me waiting in anticipation at Galadriel´s reaction!
And I am loving more and more Aurthon and his wife´s pov as one of the leading povs in this tale, for their inner thoughts and their own insecurities and small family drama are an excellent side story for this very long day. I marvel that it is 18 chapters left, Redheredh, and I praise you for your talent, because to me it seems as if I knew this splendidly depicted court in all its secrets and particular ways. A wonderful, wonderful tale.
Author's reply
I just glad you had a moment for yourself and we could entertain you!
Everyone was expecting Galadriel. ;) "Mirathel's mise en scene was hilarious" Ha! - as long as you were not laughing at my metteurs en scene. ;P The matron's ironic sense of humor never really leaves her either, thank goodness. And, I admit to going more 'stage' then 'screen' with my scenes. I am sorry about Galadriel being so reluctant to participate, though. The next chapter is not getting polished up for posting even slowly.
Ya know, I never actually meant for that couple to garner any affection from the readers. But as characters, they are good, decent, upstanding people who are climbing in precarious heights. I think I like them mostly for their bravery.
Thank you, Perelleth. You are always generous with the compliments. I appreciate the boost. Oh please! 18 compared to over 40 in other author's single plotlines? But, I promise I will finish telling this story. Even if it takes years... omg, it already has!

I am very glad that I know Hrassa is around and telling tales to Celebrian as she grows up - because otherwise I would be worrying that all his angry 'family' were about to cast him into the outer darkness in penalty for his abandonment of them.
Mirathel is definitely Not At All Happy. And won't be until she has made Hrassa suffer visibly - and plentifully - for his sins. On the other hand, the fact that they are all so angry does indicate a care for the recalcitrant bowman - or why would they bother?
I like the vision of Celeborn and Galadriel as the collision of two elemental forces. Hydrogen and oxygen - a chemical reaction essential to life.
Laerlinath is learning a lot. And will soon grow up and be ready to take her place among the players.
Author's reply
Well, we will find out how he got through. Galadriel still has to decide whether or not he can stay under her roof! Really now, they have not treated him that badly...
Poor Mirathel tends to take things very personally. I think she gauges her own worth by how much trust people give her. It took her a while to get over Galadriel not telling about the Kinslaying, too. And Hrassa only spoke to Celebrimbor about not coming back home, it seems. But, she came around back then and probably will now.
Yep, air and water, that's them. ...with Celebrimbor as fire in their triad.
Hmm, you sound rather supportive of Laerlinath. ;) I promise you she does alright down the road. Mostly alright anyway
Thank you so much for hanging in there and reviewing over all this time - despite the slow updates! I really appreciate it.

This is turning very interesting. I especially like the little reference to Celeborn and Galadriel's meeting. Do we receive futher info in this area or is this a fleeting comment?
Can I use the idea/quote (Oh my, child, the Lord and Lady did not meet in Doriath!” Mirathel grinned at her puzzled expression. “Rather, they collided and were welded together by the sheer force of the impact.”)in reference to a short story that popped into my head when I read it? Please?

Ah well,'tis not a mere fleeting comment. ;D I have the backstory outlined. Although, getting it written and posted is much much farther down the road. But, there will be references to that encounter in this and other tales as the subject comes up.
I am very flattered that you were prompted by Mirathel's remark. You must write your story! A sensual tale of impelling passions (without any BSDM please) would be a real treat! However... I must reserved this specific quote for this character alone. For her statement has significance.
Thank you, lackam! It's always so nice to hear from someone new!

· Chapter 17: A Considerable Welcome
I confess I blinked when Celeborn turned from elegant, lordly friend to intimidating, offended lord! (These are very scary people - puissant seems a very good word to describe them. And Celeborn and Galadriel are well-matched - I'm not surprised Laerlinath is nervous at the idea of being too close to her!)
The arrival of Celebrimbor is a decided relief. (Not often that is said about Celebrimbor!) And Hrassa snaps back into old friend and welcome guest.
I'm coming to like Laerlinath - give her a few more centuries and she'll definitely be a player. She's still a bit out of her depth - but her swimming skills are improving rapidly.
And Hrassa will be going to that tea party! There are powers greater than his will involved in this - and he will be sitting with Celebrian's dolls and sipping noxious fluids from tiny cups before he has time to run!
Author's reply
Well, Gimli and Aragorn show that there is a softer side to Galadriel, too. ;) I'm sure Laerlinath will catch on to the Lady's moods like everyone else. And like Hrassa, she'll know when she's crossed a line ... eh, or maybe not until its too late...
"(Not often that is said about Celebrimbor!)" You're right! I had not thought about it that way! And Hrassa knows that he just has to admit his mistakes and he will be forgiven. You would think.
Laerlinath is not stupid, by any means, but she was raised Noldor. In many ways, that puts her at a disadvantage dealing with Nos Galadhad. For circumstances aren't always what she would expect. However, she is a trooper where her and Aurthon's budding family fortunes are concerned.
Oh, we know he does! More than once! Hehe! But, Celebrian learned to brew choice teas from her father remember. No one's gonna croak on it. Unless she starts experimenting...
My thanks for reading and reviewing!

I was wondering about you jsut yesterday! I´m so glad this was about to come out and I did not know!
I am impressed by the first scene. Celeborn´s change was stning and perfectly done, a blizzard indeed, that was a masterfully chosen image! And I also loved his sense of opportunity, for he had been waiting patiently for the chance to show up to clearly state the level of his disappointment with Hrassa in a wonderful display of the efficiency of "show versus tell" NO wonder that Hrassa was stunned. I was as well, bowing at Celeborn´s (your)smartness and a bit intimidated by the forceful way in which he expressed himself. Bravo!
I also enjoyed very much Laerlinath's pov. She appears now as an intteligent, discerning woman, a good match for Aurthon indeed. And no wonder that Hrassa was so relieved and happy to see Celebrimbor after the cold shower received from Celeborn. I suppose that Celeborn was just making his point, since they are joking and toasting together again in no time, the Lord again turned summer, so I also like the depth of understanding between them that those reactions show.
I am really loving the subtle intricacies and winks of this tale, and now I am more than looking forward towards the meeting with Galadriel! I will wait patiently, I swear!
Author's reply
Are you saying you like surprises? :) So do I - very glad to see your post too!
Opportunity is a keyword with Celeborn. But, I really think he did not want to have to do any more than let Elrovail remind Hrassa to behave and was angry about that as well. He was certainly harsher on Hrassa than he was with Celebrian in the jail. But, correction made, life goes on; no need to dwell over it overlong.
I thought it was about time to get into her point of view. She is sooo Noldor. Celebrimbor is a chance to let go of the unpleasantness at hand.
Oh dear, I am afraid that you will have to be patient. Very patient...

So gorgeous. I love Elrovail and Hrassa - they clearly know each other very well indeed. So well, really, that newcomers like Aurthon and Laerlinath can only blink as they try to decode all the unspoken messages.
Molehill seems quite a good description of the maze in which they are all roaming! And the thought of Celebrimbor getting lost in it is most entertaining. He has had longer than A and L to try to slot himself into this bewildering group of ancient elves - but I suspect his physical confusion reflects his incomplete grasp of all the ins and outs of what is happening at some very deep level.
I love the grooming scene! And considerations as to fashion. And I'm very impressed by Hrassa's shirt - not only a beautiful fabric and made by the Lady, but also in remarkably good condition for its age! Nice bit of flirting between Celeborn and Laerlinath - I expect Aurthon was quite relieved to hear that he's very married. (Plus Laerlinath knows that Galadriel is dangerous!)
And Celebrian has come for her cogndir? Put the claim in quickly!
Author's reply
Oh dear... obviously there are problems with not posting quickly enough for past chapters to be in mind when reading the latest. I have changed the phrase 'a shrill chirp' to 'a shrill chirp of sound' for clarification. That was Celebrian's unrestrained shout to Nitmilru. Celebrimbor was not lost, but further delayed. Elrovail is just being derisive. Still, she does have Quare's number, it appears...
However, I am glad that you are ok with the elaborate description of everything. :) Although, not much ever happens; mostly stage-setting for what comes later.
Hrassa's shirt is indeed old. Most of his gear is. Indeed, metal and stone objects would last practically forever. But, if *lovingly* cared for, I can see elven textiles lasting a few centuries of use.
I am convinced that Celeborn enjoys young ellith - in a sheltering, very paternal and teasing, sort of way. As Celebrimbor once mentioned, he is very indulgent with his wife and, I think, would be with all her gender if he could be. Although, one of that gender might choose the word 'patronizing' instead ...
Thank you so much for reviewing, Bodkin! I really appreciate it!

· Chapter 16: A Confounding Welcome
I was out of town for the week-end, but it was a most welcome present and a nice surprise.
Your adjectives and imagery always stun me. The first three paragraphs left me speechless, seriously, the whole story is like a fresco, rather a miniated parchment, with so many little details that it is a pleasure to find out with every reading. And most of the action takes place in the same night! I bow again to you. YOu surely do not pretend it, but this court at Ost-in-Edhil is getting a deeper baroque flavour to me with every chapter. I suppose you are drawing from another period, but for some reason that is what it evokes to me. And in a very good way. The second part, with Celeborn and Hrassa rearranging their appearance attended by Aurthôn and his wife was perfectly done, in my opinion, with Aurthon's attempts at light conversation and Hrassa showing his best manners, and Celeborn flirting with Laerlínath while you show all the details of what they are actually doing...I almost picture all of them with long curled white wigs and powdered faces...
Who would have thought that Hrassa was capable of being such a comediant? ;-) He was great, and it is great fun to follow the exchange between him and Elrovail, the cues and hints, as perceived by Aurthôn. His analytical and calculating mind is always at work, although he surely has trouble understanding the truth of waht is going on behind the comedy being played before his eyes -and his wife's. Yet, for some reason, Hrassa is being polite and kind to him, and I am glad for that. Poor Aurthôn would not survive the first assault!
It is always more than worth the wait. Now I am looking forward to Galadriel's reaction, and Celebrimbor finally finding his way in own palace...and how Celebrían got there? This is deliciously tangled, with so many people running around in the palace while the party goes on! I must go back and re read.
Author's reply
My goodness, you are always extremely generous with your compliments! But, I am very very glad if you enjoyed it that much! Thank you.
Looking back, I think I should have had the first chapter as a prologue to the rest. However at the time, I wanted to keep some continuity to Celebrian coming to see Hrassa in jail in the evening when things really get started.
And yes, I do have a another period of history in mind most of the time. :) Renaissance Florence. Although, as of yet, unsure whether or not I see Celebrimbor as a DaVinci. ;)
I think Hrassa, in choosing to be more commoner than a courtier, would lean towards pantomime or pranks before too subtle tart twists of phrase. Not that he does not appreciate clever language or decorum! Only that physical comedy would appeal more to him personally. To him, it might seem more forthright and clearly meant in fun. He likes causes, not politics.
Aurthon and his wife are young and growing. In an ideal situation, they would not feel the full weight of their future positions until their elders felt they could handle it. However, I am with Laerlinath in thinking Celebrimbor is not bringing her husband along quickly enough. 'Course, Galadriel may have slipped up alittle with scaring the bejeeses out of the new governess, too.
Thanks for being so patient waiting for this chapter! I truly wish I was capable of working faster. Celebrimbor will arrive on the scene next chapter - as well as another party.
I have tweaked that vague bit "a shrill chirp" to "a shrill chirp of sound". That was Celebrian's excited shout to Nitmilru traveling outward. But, with such a long time since the last chapter, you certainly point out the need for some clarity in that sentence.
I really appreciate your taking the time to review! Especially during the busy holiday season!

I love seeing Celebrimbor with Celebrian - who is close to being irrepressible! He had a job maintaining his dignity and upholding parental authority, and I suspect Celebrian knows perfectly well that she can manage him to her heart's content. Probably just as well he didn't agree to marriage, though. I can't see Celeborn and Galadriel going along with that. Especially not for the next several hundred years - until their little princess is properly grown up.
She's not stupid though. She's picked up all the information Celebrimbor has dropped about Hrassa - and possibly put together more. So she can't own him as her own personal pet ... she will have to come up with another scheme, because I think that she is determined to foster this link she feels with Cliff.
I do love the way everyone is scurrying around trying to get some advantage and understand what everyone else's motivation and desires are. At least Celebrian is fairly obvious! And this is all the same day! They must sleep well at night from total mental exhaustion.
Author's reply
Yep, close to being irrepressible. Something that will be a plus later in life. Poor Celebrimbor needs a better self image. Maybe in another couple centuries, he'll know he's not so unworthy of the women he loves.
Ah, so she does have some semblance of her grandmother's wisdom, if not her looks. ;) She is definitely going to try and keep Hrassa's attention on her. I think the adventurous part of her spirit is feeling a little couped up in the palace. A kindred spirit, of some kind, would be welcome.
Oh dear, are things getting monotonous and predictable? Sorry, and the night is not that far along yet...

This was lovely, Redheredh! I really loved the first part, with Celebrimbor sailing the turbulent seas of the palace after the dragon. It is full of detail (apart from the continued, perfectly drawn nautical metaphore) and that is one of the things that amaze me in this story, the way you portray the atomphere in the palace with little details.
And I really like this instrospective Celebrimbor. The detai about the lamp and the light and the comforot that it brought to those who had seen the deseprate Drakness after the death of the trees was a very impressive touch. As the detail that he was against withholding the secret of the lamps for the apprentices, considering it a piece of civilizatino that was better spread off aloud that witheld. I think that here you have come to pindown such a perfect Celebrimbor, itnersted in his forge, seeking company and friendship, feeling a bit lonely and uterly undesrving, yet trying his own cunning for his own purposes but without succeeding.. ar teast at mischief. I come to tink he is a good elf, and I think I like that.
And Celebrían is a delightful child, this scene between Uncle and niece was lovely, for lack of better word. It is clear that there is deep understanding between them , and his reflections about celeborn through the child's behaviour are hilarious, not to mention her mimicking of the Adar...
Wonderful tale. I am so enjoying it! Your writing is so rich that is a pleasure, and, as i've said before, I am most abosrbed by hte depth of thought you have devoted to rebuild from almost nothing the epic of the third hiost, which is now hinted at so naturally here, giving depth and sense of doom to all conversations and relationships around here. Wonderful.
Author's reply
Thank you! I did have a bit of fun with that metaphor. ;)
Thank you! Celebrimbor was not a bad guy, doggone it. And he was good at what he did. He just was not much of a prince or king.
Thank you! You always put something very 'human' in your stories that makes me laugh too. And what is more realistic than children taking after their parents - and everyone but them noticing it?

Catching up... I've been biting my nails since I saw the alert...but I was finally able to sit and enjoy. I'm amazed as usual, Redheredh, at your crafted style. I like how every conversation turns into a flow of explaining words from the author in order just to hint at what is hidden or implied or suggested by the spoken exchange, enriching and filling it all with new meaning.
You have portrayed such a complicated court, with so many subtleties and talented players that poor Aurthon seems totally our of is league, despite his over confident view of self. The moment Celeborn and Hrassa catch them and begin toying with them I was reminded of a pair of felines playing with their prey... thankfully without biting, poor Aurthon, he did not deserve that!
I like the playful, charming, teasing side of Celeborn we get to see here, and how Aurthon perceives him. And remembering Celebrimbor's trouble with shirts and linens in the last chapter one cannot help laughing along with these Sindar at how well they manage to lead things to their own way. This chapter was a true jewel!
Author's reply
Oh my, thank you very much!
Yeah, work is rather *distracting* sometimes, when you should be able to sit and enjoy your hobby more. Thanks for the compliments. They salve my poor ego. I dispair of explanations at times, espcially when I take so long and get so wordy setting up the meaning I want to get across.
I know I over-complicate things. ;) But, Celeborn and Hrassa weren't toying with Aurthon, just pushing him along. And he wanted to go along. I'm still not sure anyone understood the 'odds' thing over the wine-cups.
Celeborn can be stern like Aurthon says, but he likes being kind more. And who can resist him when he's being nice? ];} I think he likes the ladies, young ladies, in particular. He certainly knew some great ones. He would have to have picked up quite a few skills dealing with Melian, Luthien, Nimloth, and Galadriel, me thinks. And then there's Elu, Eol, and Oropher.

My goodness, but they all have to be sharp as tacks all the time! They daren't let their attention slip for a second. They're so busy picking up on a twitch of an eyebrow and a fractionally bigger smile and the tone of a response - whilst walking a tightrope over a shark-infested pool. It's wonderful.
Poor Aurthon. He's really kept off-balance - never quite sure if he's gainin or losing. (I'm not sure he's quite up to the game yet.) Laerlinath is more dangerous, probably, but they're both puling babes next to Hrassa and Celeborn. And now Elrovail has joined the party. I think our young couple should just step back and watch - and learn.
the Sindar princes’ mates were all beguiled into marriage Lovely thought! I do think that Galadriel is - almost - putty in Celeborn's hands (and happy to be that way) and that they both enjoy convincing the world that she's the tough guy.
And he managed them all with no more than a smile. Hrassa and Laerlinath... I look forward to seeing how their relationship develops!
Oh, interesting stuff. I just love the sneaky subtle dance of diplomacy and manipulation. Looking forward to discovering what comes next! I expect Hrassa is, too!
Author's reply
Really? You mean it's not like this at your workplace? ;)
Well, the others have been doing this sort of thing for some time now... But, Aurthon is doing fine, if you ask me. Celebrimbor's the one missing the boat for not advancing him just like Laerlinath says.
Ha! I don't think the Exiles thought it so lovely a thing! Ya know, you have bought this up before, how they just Click! when they meet their spouses. Yes, *almost*. But then, he is the same way sometimes, I would think. - Whatever you want, honey. Just tell me and it's yours. 'Cause I'm yours. *SMILE* -
Well, these are friends, not soldiers, after all. I think Aurthon is indeed worried about those two getting along when let alone together. That is getting along too well...
Next chapter may have to catch up with Celebrimbor again. I will have to wait and see how much I get polished up. Galadriel will come out of the great hall soon enough for Hrassa, who better be really ready to apologize to a lady.

· Chapter 13: A Slight Disappointment
I love Celebrimbor squirming on Elrovail's hook. In fact, I rather think I'm developing a strong affection for Celebrimbor. He did well to escape his family and choose with whom to spend his life rather than frittering it away on flipping Silmarils. Still cursed, I suppose, and not in receipt of a happy ending - but there's always Valinor and post-death opportunities.
And you can't say he's dumb - not if he knows enough not to upset the person who provides the clean, ironed clothes and fluffy towels. Some things are more important than dignity.
C&G seem to have a very piercing sight - and go far beyond the superficial in deciding who becomes part of their extended family. And Celebrimbor should stop seeking advantage and go and join the party. It should be a lot of ... fun. Hrassa can squash Elrovail, she can terrify Celebrimbor - now, how does the circle close?
But ...'It was as if an elaborate mask – the fanciful sort worn at rowdy fairs and carnivals where only the eyes could be seen and the thoughts behind them barely read – had suddenly been dropped, revealing a surprisingly normal and worn face beneath. “And you do too.” He was taken aback at the genuine sympathy in her voice.' He's had a glimpse of the person beneath the shiny carapace - not for long, though.
Oh, I can't wait to see what happens next! Delightful.
Author's reply
Well, this version of him is so likable! ;D But, cursed? That original curse was removed. 'Course that doesn't mean certain individuals have incurred their own sentence for refusing to admit any wrongdoing. Keep up good thoughts for Celebrimbor, though.
But, the appearance of dignity can be the most important thing to some people. However, in his case I think, the comfortable and aesthetic life carries more weight.
One is a judge and the other a seer. I would certainly listen to their opinions of someone's character. Well, the master smith has finally joined the party and with much anticipation of... fun! Hmmm, I am not sure what you mean. That there must be someone in dread of Celebrimbor? Whom Hrassa would rather not cross? ;)
This is what he gets for being hung up on her behaviour and never trying to understand it.
Thank you for saying that!
*sigh* I wanted to spend more time polishing this chapter, but opted to just get it posted instead. Re-reading it, I am appalled at some of things I should have done a little better. Looks like the next chapter is not going to be that soon.

· Chapter 13: A Slight Disappointment
Another interesting chapter, and this time from Celebrimbor’s point of view. I had almost forgot that he was running around :-)
I am amazed, as usual, by the level of detail and consideration you give to such matters as the attendant at the entrance to the guests’ quarters, as a sign of whether there was someone lodging there or not, as well as the service bell, knotted up or not, depending on the status of the area… That is a nice device to tell us about the disposition of the area and organization of that part of the service. I also found Celebrimbor’s thoughts very amusing, when he was deciding whether he would provoke Elrovail’s wrath. His decision that he’d rather enjoy his fluffy towels and press upon his clothes and that he would leave the formidable housekeeper alone was very amusing, and very wise from his part, too!
I still consider Hrassa to be the ancestor of my grandfather’s housekeeper, the one who will not let you move an armchair a inch form its right place, nor welcome any innovation to the vineyards, nor stop claiming that how good things -and wine- were in the goof ole days! That’s Hrassa! But Galadriel was very brave to equal him to Huan! ;-)
Elrovail’s appearance is truly fearsome, even for a grandson of Fëanor, and one who apparently looked the Powers in the eye in his youth... But she taunts him almost to grovelling in a well practiced manner…That meeting shall surely be worth a lot of detail! I’m so looking forward to it!
Btw, a lovely idea. Tolkien's cosmology is so open that leaves room for many things...:-)
Author's reply
Thank you, but I certainly could not let Celebrimbor get away from being part of the fun *that* easily. ;)
I do have a problem with characters reaching significant conclusions without explaining how they did that. Now, I would say a wise person weighs the worth of what he wants. Besides, as many would say, Celebrimbor has to live - and work - there.
As another saying goes, a man's best friend is his dog. Along with his horse, his hawk, and his lady - all very precious to a any good lord. derry derry down down And another big reason Hrassa's running off hurt both C&G.
Ah, but do the Powers of Arda ever smite someone down without cause? Well, maybe Osse... just for the fun if it... Celebrimbor is obviously anxious to see Galadriel's face. However, he knows why Hrassa left and that he was never actually dead; the master smith may be expecting the lady to be *happily* surprised. Like Elrovail seems to be anticipating.
Oh, the Begetting holiday thing? Thank you! And thanks again for your thoughts on the subject. :)

· Chapter 12: A Narrow Doorway
Well... sleep has been elusive so I sat back here and began catching up...
"But if you cannot abide our business, Hrassa... stand by your choice and stay out it.” I loved this sentence. This Celeborn is perfectly built up in his convictions, his wide sight, his calm acceptance that he's underestimated more often than not, and his persistence in pursuing his goals. And I like to think that, despite his plans going "a bit" awry, he did feel proud of Celebrian's sons.
Now, Laerlínath surprised me in the beginning with her trembling and general nervous state, when she allowed Aurthôn comfort her and protect her, but soon she returned to herself. This relationship reminds me of something I am now too tired to remember, but their roles seem quite familiar. And the master scribe can now, by a hit of luck, earn a point with his master...or so he hopes. Poor Aurthon, anyway, he's no match for Hrassa's dry wit... :-)
Good point to have Celeborn and Hrassa finding them such way. As we know, Hrassa shall spend some time telling tales to Celebrìan, but, shall he have an opinion about who should be those sons' father? :-)
Author's reply
Well... I'm glad you did... ;)
It definitely was a clear statement. Of course, Celeborn will love Elohir and Elladan and be proud of them for who they are! And he better be grateful that he has them at all!
Poor Laerlinath was unexpectedly overwhelmed, I think. Probably because Galadriel understood her fears a little too well. I mean, look how she affected Boromir, brave man that he was. Hmm, the couple both have pretty regular pesonalities for their character types and that may be why they seem familiar. Hrassa's first impression of Laerlinath is that she is much like Galadriel. But, Aurthon is a very decent sort of guy, just like Hrassa. I think they will get along ok together. Unless, one of them is asked to do something entirely dishonest...
Laerlinath will be a better person for is all, I think. And I really think that who is a little too far in the future for Hrassa to consider the possibilities yet.
Thank you very much for the review!

Ah! So delighted to see you continuing this story! I know you had to take a step back and decide what direction the story was going to go. What a treat to get the author alert in my inbox.
Heh. Poor Laerlínath. Galadriel's "test" are rather ... trying, I would think. Yikes, I certainly wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one.
So good to see her and Aurthôn making up. There was some mistrust going on between them in earlier chapters. I wasn't sure I liked Laerlínath at all, but I think I'm understanding her better. She's been a little afraid and off balance the entire time, I think. Seeing the love the two of them truly share does a lot to improve my opinion of her. Sneaky of you, convincing me to embrace her after all ;) Getting caught in the corridor ... too good. I love how neither Celeborn nor Hrassa comments on it. They wouldn't see it as odd at all, would they?
Well, this just killed me: Hrassa says: “As you have said, ‘tis a new age, one without the Enemy." Ooof. Not so much. No Morgoth, maybe, but Sauron is lurking out there. I think Celeborn and Galadriel suspect that there is an enemy out there--that's a part of the reasons for the alliances that Hrassa is suspicious of. Tough to swallow, though.
This was such a great paragraph: "In the previous age, Gil-galad and Celeborn both had come too late to Sirion to save its people from slaughter. Oropher had earlier been driven away. Eärendil was always at sea. Elros and Elrond had been too young. In this age, Gil-galad had again failed to provide protection to his dependent country and Orophe.r would not. If called, Amdir would have to cross the mountains and come too late. Would Celeborn and Galadriel be long gone as had been Tuor and Idril? What if Celebrian’s yet-to-be-born sons did not arrive in time either and were unready to take up arms against a fell foe? What would happen to this princess?" It covers so much history, so much about the concerns that Hrassa is having. With that thought in his head, methinks that Hrassa will stay, despite his misgivings.
Looking forward to where you take us next, as always.
Author's reply
I am so happy to see your review! Yes, I did back-step from what you had read previously and have progressed forward again. Hrassa wanted things to be a little more true-to-*his*-life.
Poor Laerlinath, indeed. Galadriel obviously pinpointed her greatest fear and did not hesitate to use it. Perhaps Galadriel got so close to it, just as she does later with Boromir, because she shares the same fears. The two ladies are much alike.
Yes, Laerlinath has been off-kilter - Ost-in-Edhil is not Forlond. But, I really do not mean for everyone to *like* Laerlinath, just understand her. Heh! Caught kissing! Celeborn and Hrassa have not said anything yet...
Hmmm, you think they should know about Sauron already? I don't. Yes, there is always the threat of an evil dictator, but how substantial is it at this point? And, do you possibly give away your best advantage by letting the opposition know that you know he's up to something and cause him to hide his movements from you? Do you panic people and cause even more nationalism and polarization? Difficult calls to make... especially if it is only vague premonition, a shadow of evil rising far away somewhere... However, you, and Hrassa in his own way, perceive the situation.
We know Hrassa will stay for a while. He's been telling stories to Celebrian. But, for how long? I really do think Celeborn will protest against him wasting his special talents just babysitting.
I started this story to introduce Hrassa and have him educate Celebrian about her heritage. And I hope to get a few more of those tales done as this one progresses. Doggone if HAN hasn't turned to only the outline for all of these stories!
Thank you so much for letting me know you are reading. :D

· Chapter 12: A Narrow Doorway
Poor Laerlínath. Galadriel must have been truly scary to shake her this badly! And then to get caught smooching in the private rooms by Celeborn - her face will take a fair while to resume its normal complexion. Aurthôn is feeling pretty gleeful - with a that'll-show-'em nod towards his in-laws!
(“You cannot risk termination over me!” This sounds a pretty serious reaction to standing up for your wife!)
It's rather entertaining to picture them stuck there by an inability to find the private door. (And a desire to smooch.)
Hrassa and Celeborn are being so veiled with each other - but hackles are rising - they will have to be a little plainer with each other, I think, or risk division through incomprehension. Celebrian and her sons, huh? Foresight? Or a really rather premature idea of marrying her off?
And Celeborn probably already has a scheme in mind involving Hrassa - his arrival might have been a surprise, but his prince has already shuffled and recut his card to include this trump. Good to see Aurthôn congratulating himself on his good fortune in encountering Hrassa. Don't know if he's quite up to the game - but really look forward to finding out.
This is all one giant political bouillabaisse.
Author's reply
Poor Laerlinath was taken by surprise, me thinks. Galadriel's ire might just be up, as well. Aurthon does seem to have a slight esteem problem with the wife's relatives. But, he is happy for 'dearest comrade' too. :)
(Does it? Well, I think everyone knows Celeborn will stand up for his wife, too. And she is "Ceasar's wife" almost literally. Someone complaining to her husband - the only one who may actually judge her - that she is abusive to her minions had better have irrefutable proof.)
Of course, they could always leave by the regular doors. But, I think L knew A would be too curious and also want to try to avoid the crowds. That ringing toast may have encouraged the smooching. ;)
Celeborn had said before that there would a new northrim springing from Nos Galadhad to watch over the Lindar. ... Hrassa said here that he sees what is going on now - Morgoth's evil will return in some form. The elves must be ready to face it together (with Men and Dwarves) or they will lose everything sooner rather than later to the humans. And what kind of people would they be, what kind of world would they make under the dominion of an evil dictator? C&G have a plan to thwart that rising evil in the east, but they need time for it to work. BTW, the Naugrim are being included because Galadriel sees them as an vital addition to their forces, just like Tolkien mentions, not because Celeborn really trusts them all that much. He just wants access to the route through the mountains and not have to go over them.
Yep. You got it. You don't let a friend's talents go to waste. Aurthon is another talented guy. Believe it or not, he is a principled person, as is Hrassa. They should get along well together. But, you are right; we'll have to wait and see if Celebrimbor is right about Aurthon.
Hmmm, like bouillabaisse... is that good or bad?
Thank you so much for reviewing!

· Chapter 11: A Necessary Caution
I was holding my breath for the whole chapter! and did not notice until I reached the end... The conversation along the dark narrow passage was terrific! Celeborn's worries for his child are understandable and amusing. THe seriousness of the subjects under the apparent light bantering is greatly done, Redheredh, and the description of the passage and the way Hrassa is preceiving his surroundings through his other senses is simply perfect. Loved that.
My lady’s wardrobe has ever included a mantle of piety which I have borrowed for our daughter’s sake I laughed at this! There's so much implication in all the conversation, but this I find so subtly put! So we have a truly Eldar who grew up among the powers, married to an elf who, despite having lived by one of the minor powers is... less than awed by them...lovely!
I also like the implications about Celeborn's behaviour when he was lord of Harlindon... and far more courageous than undertaking an exodus in protest. LOL! Of course that was!!! This ever ready Celeborn reminds me of someone, yet I cannot tell whom...but I loved that slogan... I bleive it suits him oerfect, as it does this self effacing attitude. A great, great lord indeed. I'm loving this look at politics in ERegion!
And, let me tell you, I for one, don't mind that it takes you so long to post, when the result are these great, deeply layered and wonderfully descriptive chapters . I wouldn't be able to produce such a thing, were I given a whole year and writing in my mother language! So go you! take your time and let us know what happened with Galadriel! :-)
Author's reply
You are just too kind! I am very glad you found this chapter worth raading. ;)
less than awed by them Yep, and the Valar really haven't paid much attention to the Lindar. Galadriel would behave with a little more respect towards them though. But, bad-language is bad-language and childres should be protected from questionable extremes until they have learned a little judgement in such matters.
There are princes and prince-consorts who have influenced history from behind the throne and are not acknowledged in mainstream history. You have to go back to what their contemporaries said about them and piece together the accomplishments that has been shelved in favor of more popular figures. I really appreciate your experience with the wheels of government and being able to see the movement and not just the grinding.
Thank you so much for saying all that! Aurthon and Laerlinath conclude matters with Mirathel next chapter, sorry to say. But, Hrassa will eventually have a talk with Galadriel.
Thanks again for the encouragement!

· Chapter 11: A Necessary Caution
I do like Hrassa and Celeborn. They're being all comradely and long-lost-friends-ish on the surface, but they're still dancing round each other trying to decide why they're behaving exactly as they are - and Hrassa is very wary of Celeborn's schemes. (Rightly, I suspect.)
The picture of Celeborn encouraging the common perception of him as an attractive accessory to the Lady - much like a handbag - is delightful. Especially since all know it to be a complete illusion, perpetrated to pull the wool over other eyes. I like him being protective of his wife and daughter. And the child already sneaks off does she? I wonder what Celeborn could do about that? Galadriel as an uneasy gambler - well, motherhood does that to you. Nesting and protecting - security suddenly becomes a whole lot more important than in your wild youth.
Doing one’s duty must be a choice huh? Why do I get the feeling that Celeborn is being very clever and manipulative? I don't think Hrassa stands much of a chance of escaping without doing what his friend and lord wants him to do. But then the cleverest thing of all is that he won't want to!
Do we get to see Hrassa with Galadriel? I would love to see how they interact. This is a fascinating story and I just love Hrassa - (of course, loving Celeborn goes without saying) - and want to know more.
Author's reply
I'm very glad you like their relationship. They are like friends from the old neighborhood who have lost touch with each other and then unexpectantly met-up. Both know the other person, but not necessarily who they have become. Hrassa might yearn to be part of world-changing events again, but he has to be asking himself once again if he is up to compromising his honesty?
*g* An inconsequential aura certainly allows Celeborn a lot more freedaom of movement. And has the extra bonus of helping people underestimate him. E2L can understant that benefit. ;) Well, protection is his thing, after all. Galadriel should trust his security-skills. And he was right on Celebrian's tail, now wasn't he? But, you are right about how parenthood can effect you.
I think Celeborn believes and practices what he says. If one is not given the choice to make the commitment, the duty it entails becomes onerous and fosters shoddy execution. But of course, the motivation to make the commitment can be very complex and personal.
Do we get to see Hrassa with Galadriel? Heh! Is this what I get for harassing you about Oropher? Yes, they will talk...just not in the next chapter...maybe couple of chapters. *sorry* But, I am so glad you do find this fascinating. Which encourages me to continue - so thank you very much!
