You've got me in suspense and eagerly awaiting what Glorfindel has to tell them and how they will solve this.

Author's reply

Thank you. A grand compliment to any author is, "And what happens next??"

lavendertook · 4 December 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

Scary and soothing both. Poor Sam! "When at last the path opened up to reveal a fair valley, bathed in light and alive with the sound of fountains and birds, he wondered if he was dreaming, at least." That beautifully describes a first glimpse of Rivendell.

Author's reply

Thank you, my friend. It's always a relief to me when they arrive safely (more or less) in Rivendell. It's a very special place.

lavendertook · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 2: Dazed

Oh, that was chiling! And Pippin almost getting swept away from being thoughtlessly brave is so Pippin.

Author's reply

Dear Pippin! It must have been agony for the hobbits to not be able to rush to Frodo's aid right away.

Fiondil · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

Only once every age or so?.... Surely not! LOL! A great chapter, Shirebound. I'm glad you're having Glorfindel play such a pivotal role in this tale. He's my favorite Elf (tied with Finrod) and I love to see him in action. Looking forward to more.

Author's reply

I'm fascinated by how pivotal a role Glorfindel is playing, since that wasn't my original plan at all! I love how our own stories take us places we never imagined they would. I'm really happy you're enjoying my depiction of him.

Lily Baggins · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

Oh, words cannot describe how much I enjoyed Glorfindel's concern here! Yup, it quite made my afternoon. Your Glorfindel is awesome... but of course, I love your Aragorn and your hobbits and your Elrond and your Gandalf... all of them! I can't wait to see them break the news to Aragorn. I shuddered at the image of the black shadow over his head... yikes. But it makes perfect sense that of everyone, Frodo would be the one to be able to see it, given his closeness to the Ring and his heightened senses after carrying it for so long. I can't help but wonder how Aragorn is going to react to this. Is he going to be all, "I'm fine, leave me alone!" or is he going to be a bit upset and dismayed? Hmmm... I am really looking forward to finding out. And of course, I have NO IDEA how they're going to get that Nazgul to flee. All I know is that I hope it does hurt Aragorn at least a teeny tiny bit... or more... or whatever you have up your sleeve for him. So enjoying this! I LOVE having all these people worried about Aragorn!!!

Author's reply

All I know is that I hope it does hurt Aragorn at least a teeny tiny bit... Heeeee. Since you're the one who inspired this story, you can be assured that there might be a wee bit of difficulty in coaxing this Nazgul fragment out of him. I just have to get us there. I'm incredibly thrilled that you're enjoying this. *beams*

Cairistiona · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

Oh to only make a mistake once every age or so! That was a nice bit of humor to lighten (a teeny bit) what was a very ominous chapter. I'm dying to see what Aragorn himself feels about all this... but it's interesting to see events unfold through Glorfindel's eyes. Looking forward to the next installment!

Author's reply

Yes, poor Glorfindel... when he makes a (rare) mistake, it's a doozy. :) I'm also quite curious about Aragorn's experience. I'm letting the story unfold as it chooses to, which is quite fun. I'm glad you're enjoying this.

Estelcontar · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

Fingers crossed Glorfindel fixes things soon. Very thrilling chapter.

Author's reply

Thank you. With luck, the combined wisdom of wizard, elves, and hobbits will combine to find a solution to this dilemma.

Gentle Hobbit · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

Ah... Glorfindel is on the path. I've always been fond of Glorfindel and hated seeing him replaced by Arwen. I'm so glad you are giving him a good role in this story! That was a little creepy when Frodo described the dark shadow that emerged from Aragorn during Gandalf's use of the Black Speech. *shiver*

Author's reply

I'm growing quite fond of Glorfindel! I hadn't originally planned for him to be a major character, but the story is weaving itself, it seems.

Dreamflower · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

Oh, I am so *glad* Glorfindel seems to know what's going on, and will be able to inform Elrond and Gandalf. But the enemy seems to have wrought his spell rather carefully-- how in the world will they be able to break it without harming its host?

Author's reply

How indeed? I hope my plan to resolve everything works out. *bites nails*

Ellynn · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

What a thriller! I love this, and can't wait for more. I hope you'll update soon. :)

Author's reply

Thank you for the encouragement. I look forward to diving into the next chapter as soon as I can.

Addie71 · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

I love this chapter! The arrival at Rivendell, finally among friends to care for them was wonderful. The Council made me shiver and worry for Aragorn and the Quest. And Glorfindel's realization that he needed to talk to Elrond was such a relief. I just hope it's not too late.

Author's reply

Hopefully it's not! I'm so glad you're enjoying this. :)

Grey Wonderer · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

I am so very glad that Glorfindel is on the watch here. He may be a bit behind but he's catching up fast. I loved that last line about Glorfindel making a mistake 'once every age or so'. hehehe The Elves are such confident folk.

Author's reply

I doubt Elves make 'hasty' decisions very often, but perhaps Glorfindel could have confided in Elrond or Gandalf before this. Oh well, with luck everything will work out in the end... :)

6336 · 3 December 2011 · Chapter 4: Awakened

Hm, yes, I suppose fighting a Balrog could be called a catastrophic mistake but I think the Balrog made just as big a mistake in taking on Glorfindel! Yep, probably should have spoken up a little sooner Glorfi! Huggs, Lynda

Author's reply

We always do what seems best at the time, but sometimes we find out we should definitely have acted differently. Why shouldn't Elves have the same problem? :)

lbilover · 26 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

Poor dear Sam, so worried about Frodo and so weary himself. Phew- I'm glad they've all made it safely to Rivendell. Interesting how Glorfindel handled the Ring. It's something I never thought about before. Still all those gaps to fill! :-) Thank you!

Author's reply

May the gaps (and the urge to fill them) go ever on and on! :)

Layne · 23 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

> After awhile, a group of Elves joined them, singing softly as they walked. They brought fruits, ripe and crisp on the tongue, and bread warm and sweet, and soon the hobbits’ sharpest hungers were eased. As they travelled, the air grew warmer and the sun seemed to sparkle more brilliantly through the trees. The Last Homely House ... a very apt name indeed *sighs*

Author's reply

I wish we could all visit there. *sighs with you*

Linda Hoyland · 22 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

Poor Sam. It is all too easy to forget what an ordeal all this must have been for the Hobbits. I'm worried now if Aragorn will turn to the dark side!

Author's reply

It must have been tremendously difficult for the hobbits to keep up with the pace necessary to get to the border of Rivendell before it was too late for Frodo.

Andrea · 22 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

What a fine welcome they received in Rivendell! And Sam thinking that he's dreaming or has died! And when he saw old Mr. Bilbo standing on the steps of a grand house, and heard his voice, he was sure of it. No wonder at all :-) But what about Sam? He was near Aragorn and he heard the words in the Black Speech. I have a feeling that he is more than just exhausted...

Author's reply

Safe at last, at least for the moment. I hope to spend my Thanksgiving break daydreaming about "what happens next". What fun! Thank you for reading, Andrea.

Antane · 22 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

So glad to see another chapter! Poor Sam with being sick and all. He will at least get part of his wish when he wakes up, but alas not all of it. I love this little gapfiller part.

Author's reply

Thank you, Antane. What a joy to make sure our hobbits receive gentle care.

Estelcontar · 21 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

A lovely chapter. After such gruelling journey it's no wonder that they're all exhausted and that Sam is feeling sick and thinking it was a dream. Hopefully, he'll soon remember it wasn't, and hopefully, Aragorn will prove to be much stronger than the Nazgûl takes him for.

Author's reply

There is always hope! *grins*

Laikwalâssê · 21 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

Uh oh, what an interesting story. Creepy, sad and horrific all at once. I like it very much, even if I´m not a hobbit fan, but your descriptions of the little ones have caught my eye and heart. Glorfindel is great as always and has any right to wonder and worry. Looking foreward to the next chapters. Thank you. Lai

Author's reply

Thank you for reading, Lai. The "little ones" have always been dear to my heart, especially their interactions with the Big Folk. I'm glad you're enjoying this.

Grey Wonderer · 21 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

Poor hobbits! And now, is Bill the pony one of the Ring Bearers? Does this mean that later, Bill will get to go into the West too? (plot bunny or crazy rantings, you decide.) Still, I can just imagine Sam turning up and being met by Bill who takes me to Frodo. : ) Exciting chapter. I hope Sam is feeling better soon.

Author's reply

What an adorable idea about Bill! *grins* May our plot bunnies and crazy rantings go ever on and on.

Lily Baggins · 21 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

I really enjoyed seeing the company welcomed so gently and warmly to Rivendell... I can't imagine their welcome would have been any different at all, since it was known to be a place of such peace and healing. A really beautiful last paragraph, that was. And of course, I really enjoyed seeing everyone's fear and concern for Frodo, and Glorfindel's observation that the knife hilt seems to have lost its aura of evil. Honestly, I'm so looking forward to Glorfindel in this story! I am absolutely clueless as to what's going to happen next... this is NOT a predictable story, and it seems almost anything could happen. It's keeping me on pins and needles!!!

Author's reply

I'm so pleased that this isn't predictable, since I always fear writing the same story over and over. I had no idea Glorfindel would be such a major character! My original notes barely mention him. It's amazing how these tales take on a life of their own. Thank you SO much for reading, and I can't wait to start work on chapter 4 over Thanksgiving. :)

Fiondil · 20 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

And so the Ring and whatever is inside Aragorn have entered the Valley of Imladris. Glorfindel is right to wonder about that shard. I wonder if Sam will be instrumental in solving this particular enigma, one that none yet know exist. Looking forward to the next installment, Shirebound.

Author's reply

Thank you, Fiondil. It's such a challenge -- and a joy -- to imagine all the "what if's" in the Professor's multi-layered world.

Cairistiona · 20 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

Poor Sam, getting sick! And little wonder he started thinking it all a dream; he had to have been completely exhausted. This was a nice gentle chapter, reminding me that their entry into Rivendell wasn't frantic like you'd think it would be but rather a careful, gentle affair. You captured that mood perfectly.

Author's reply

Thank you. It's interesting that the Professor wrote that Frodo was brought "slowly" to Rivendell. It gives us a chance to imagine many different scenarios.

Dreamflower · 20 November 2011 · Chapter 3: Rivendell

I never get tired of expansions on this part of the story! You show the grief and weariness of Frodo's friends so very well! Those last three paragraphs, from Sam's POV: It didn't take long for Glorfindel and the hobbits to catch up with Aragorn, and the Elf-lord and Ranger took turns carrying Frodo. Sam rode in a haze of weariness beyond anything he had ever felt, his head still spinning, and the thought occurred to him that perhaps they had all indeed died at the River and none of this was real. When at last the path opened up to reveal a fair valley, bathed in light and alive with the sound of fountains and birds, he wondered if he was dreaming, at least. And when he saw old Mr. Bilbo standing on the steps of a grand house, and heard his voice, he was sure of it. The Elves' song changed, and melodies urging rest and sleep bathed the hobbits in rhythmic pulses. Sam's fingers slowly loosened their hold on Bill's reins, and gentle hands lifted him and bore him away. As he slid into a deep sleep, his last thoughts were of his master, and hopes that they would all awaken in real beds, to a homely breakfast, far from dark riders or adventures. Those are just beautiful-- wonderfully descriptive and filled with warmth and release from fear.

Author's reply

"warmth and release from fear"... two of my favorite things, and no mistake. How wonderful that we can imagine these scenes in so many different ways.
