Deceptive Uncertainty

Amidst the worry and fear of watching Pippin depart with Gandalf to Minas Tirith, Merry could only maintain a fearless facade, encouraging the perception to Pippin that he felt that this was for the best. But Pippin’s tearful cries of “Merry” echoed in his mind and all emotions surfaced.

He ran up the wooden stairs, watching Shadowfax bear away his beloved cousin to a far, unknown place. Aragorn placed his hand comfortingly upon Merry's shoulder, but this did not prevent salty tears to freely flow down Merry's eyes as the white horse vanished into the vastness of the Rohan plains.
