Elf, Interrupted: Book Two: Glorfindel's Quest  by Fiondil 13 Review(s)
LarnerReviewed Chapter: 41 on 1/27/2009
Shall we say, "Beware of Valar bearing gifts and Maiar with thoughts of mischief"? Heh!

What have they gotten themselves into, I wonder?

Author Reply: I suppose you could say that, Larner. *grin* And I suspect they will all be asking that same question before Glorfindel is through with them. *heh!*

"'I think Lady Nienna would like you to,' the Maia said, choosing his words carefully. 'A week is hardly enough time in which to relax and I don’t think you’ve had as much time to think about things as you would like, have you?'" Nothing but the truth there! Very smart Maia.

"'Perhaps not,' he admitted somewhat reluctantly. 'But to tell you the truth, I find thinking to be hard work. I’d rather be doing something instead.'" Yup, that's Glorfindel. But also he's trying to run and not think about what he's been through.

"He grimaced at that, feeling somewhat insulted by the image the phrase evoked in him." Not terribly fond of the phrase either, but it fits.

"For the moment, though, Nyéreser was concentrating on helping his fellow Maiar with Glorfindel who, truth to tell, intrigued the Maia very much." Are there *any* Maiar he doesn't intrigue?

Smart of Pallando. (And won't he be one of the Blue Wizards?)

"I... watched Glorfindel while he was in Lórien. Above all, he needs to feel needed. If... if he thinks that someone here needs him, perhaps...." Lisselindë is learning already- everyone needs to feel needed.

"'I am glad that you are able to see your need, child,' she said to Lisselindë, 'and to see Glorfindel’s need as well. I think it just might work.'" I hope it does, for both their sakes!

"Let our impossible ellon see that he has nothing on impossible Maiar." *laughs* After all, the Maiar have had far longer to practise.

"I’m a Reborn, despised by half the population of Aman and apparently the bane of the Valar’s existence. Everything I knew and loved has been destroyed and I’m left picking up the pieces, but you don’t see me hiding in a corner, do you?" No, you aren't hiding, but aren't quite facing everything either.

That whole conversation was heartrending. I think both of them were being far more honest than they had planned to be.

But I am curious as to what Glorfindel's prank was that turned out so bad he spent a month in prison for it.

"I did not mean to compare you to Morgoth. That was unforgivable of me." Not unforgivable, just difficult.

"We never saw the Rebellion coming." *winces too* Much stems from that lack of foresight...

"Then Lisselindë, feeling the time was right, set the trap. She reached out a tentative hand and placed it on Glorfindel’s arm to get his attention. 'Wo-would you teach me, lord?' she asked in all humility." Well, even with all the emotions running rampant, she didn't forget the plan.

Two weeks certainly isn't long, especially for the Eldar. But will it be long enough?

I wouldn't feel much like eating after that, either.

"'Glorfindel will be good for Lisselindë,' Námo stated with a straight face. 'Just think of all the mischief the two of them can get themselves into, especially with Tiutalion there to goad them on.'" *eyes widen* If they thought Aldundil and Vorondil were bad, they ain't seen nothing yet.

I have the feeling Atar will enjoy the hijinks as much as the Ainur.

Author Reply: Hi, Indy. Yes, Pallando will someday become one of the Blue Wizards. For now, of course, he is Nienna's Chief Maia. When he leaves (apparently forever) his position will be taken over by Tiutalion (of course!).

I think you are correct that both Elf and Maia were being far more honest than either one had planned to be. As for Glorfindel's prank that got him an exclusive tour of Turgon's prison (*grin*)... perhaps some day we'll find out just what it was and what went wrong.

And while two weeks isn't all that long, it should be long enough... and who knows? Perhaps something will happen in the meantime that will force Glorfindel to stay even longer. *grin*

I think you're right about Atar enjoying the show as much as the Ainur. He's probably setting up the popcorn machine even now. *lol*

Tell me I didn't say this. Please, tell me that I didn't make such a fool of myself.
In my language, "reading" is translated with "lectura" and right now I did very much like a character from a comedy written by one of our authors. This character tried to translate "mot-a-mot" her words and expressions in French, coming out of course with unbelievable funny things and making the utmost fool of herself. Well, I did it too.
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry....."burying herself in a big black hole"

Again, I'm very sorry for saying this, even unwillingly, and allow me please to reformulate:
Thank you so much for a refreshing and heartening READING.
(meaning, Iti multumesc foarte mult pentru o lectura invioratoare si datatoare de sperante. - rough translation )

Looking veeery ashamed, Sitara

Author Reply: Not to worry... just one of those false cognates that crop up between related languages, is all. *grin* Apology accepted.

Huh, the story seems to unfold nicely from this point on ...As it did so far, of course. "smile" Apparently, this would lead to the end we all know: Glorfindel turning back to Middle-Earth in order to take care of Turgon's descendants and fulfiling his utmost desire to be needed. Well, I suppose I should keep my mouth shut, but, as always, I cannot help myself. "sheepish grin"

Anyway, what I have absolutely loved in this chapter is the way Nienna and her Maiar dealt with Lisselinde. Their care and gentleness (along with the need to not have another Sauron) got me almost weeping. Very moving. Although (if I recall correctly "wince")Lisselinde's doing wasn't out of pure mischief, but rather jealousy and perhaps prejudice, she deserves another chance and I simply love the way you're managing to redeem "villains". "smile"

Again, the Maiar are absolutely adorable and Tiutalion ans Nyereser are among the best OC's I've ever seen in a fandom. Glorfindel comparing Lisselinde with Morgoth...harsh, but I personally cannot say that the accusation is exaggerated. Furthermore, in a way, Lisselinde acted even worse than Morgoth, for she's been using elflings, even if her agenda was nowhere near like Morgoth's.

Thank you again for a refreshing and heartening lecture. Sitara

Author Reply: Well we still have a ways to go before Glorfindel returns to Middle-earth so dont hold your breath. *grin*

I'm glad you liked the way Nienna and her Maiar dealt with Lisselindë. She made a mistake and is sorry for it, so they will naturally treat her with compassion and respect. Lisselindë's mistake was in thinking she knew everything she needed to know about the Eldar and their motivations and felt justified in bringing Finrod down a peg or two, but, of course, she had no right to do that and so her punishment.

Still, I think that ultimately she and Glorfindel will be good for one another, though for different reasons.

I never lecture... I simply tell a story. What you or other readers get out of it is your affair, not mine. *grin*

My hope is that both Elf and Maia will experience healing from each other. (That was quite clever of Nienna.) I can't wait to find out what mischief they get into as I know they will. How could they not.

Teheheheh.

Author Reply: That is the hope of all from Nienna on down, that both Glorfindel and Lisselindë will expericence healing from each other while wreaking havoc all over the place. *grin*

Agape4GondorReviewed Chapter: 41 on 1/25/2009
A good chapter - but I had to roll my eyes too - even before Nienna did! I can only imagine what your Muse conjures up!!!!

Author Reply: Thanks, Agape. I'm glad you enjoyed this. I'm wondering what my Muse conjures up as well. *grin*

The Valar and Maiar kind of remind me of a child stirring up ants and watching what they will do next. I still marvel while reading these stories that they, for all of their knowledg,e understand the Firstborn as little as they do. Looking forward to the next chapter!

Author Reply: Well, if you recall in "Elf, Interrupted 1", Ingwë says the very same thing to Glorfindel. *grin* And as Glorfindel pointed out in this chapter, knowing *of* something doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as *knowing* something (or someone). The Valar had nothing to do with the Theme that brought forth the Children so they are very much at a loss somethimes to figure out which way any of us will jump. It makes life a little more interesting for the Valar, if nothing else.

RadbooksReviewed Chapter: 41 on 1/25/2009
Well, this ought to be interesting! I do think it will help both of them, though I imagine in ways that none of the Valar can conceive of. It was interesting to hear what Glorfindel is truly feeling... fractured and if some part of him is missing. I hope he's able to find that soon, he needs to be healed and whole. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Author Reply: I'm sure that Glorfindel will 'find himself' eventually and most likely with Lisselindë's help and the help of others. I'm sure *everyone* is looking forward to the next chapter, including me. *lol* Thanks for the review, Radbooks. I'm glad you are still enjoying this tale.

Nienna´s Maia will get spoiled with all the entertainment certain elves provide them with. They will be bored out of their mind when Glorfindel finally leaves.

I wonder into what trouble Glorfindel and Lisselinde get themselves. Hopefully both will feel better after spending some time together.

Author Reply: Well, I have the feeling that Nienna's house is never completely empty of Elves causing trouble, so the Maiar shouldn't get too bored once Glorfindel does leave. *grin*

We'll see in the next chapter (hopefully) just what sort of trouble these two get themselves into.

KittyReviewed Chapter: 41 on 1/25/2009
So the Maiar are bored without anyone turning the place upside down constantly? *grin* Well, if they ever get Glorfindel going, they might have too much excitement for their own good ;)

Hm, I think Lisselindë is right that she needs to know more about the Firstborn. And though I am not sure Glorfindel with his rather erratic behaviour of late is the right one to help her, it’s true that he needs a purpose. He is so obviously at a loss what to do with himself if nothing happens just now that is occupying him and no one needs him and his help.

Uh huh, the way Glorfindel and Lisselindë started that dinner didn’t look very well, but obviously it worked. I only hope both of them really gain something from that. The next chapters will be interesting, no doubt!

Author Reply: These particular Maiar are used to dealing with Elves who are in need of special healing and look forward to the sort of mischief such Elves can get themselves into.

The confrontation between Glorfindel and Lisselindë, of course, was 'staged' to some extent by the Maia as a way of goading Glorfindel into agreeing to stay longer. Her need is real, though, and Glorfindel's role in helping her won't be a sham and therefore his own healing will be for real as well.
