Elf, Interrupted: Book Two: Glorfindel's Quest  by Fiondil 13 Review(s)
EärillëReviewed Chapter: 65 on 2/20/2010
Hahaha! Such a girlish question! I would imagine it was a sort of embarrassment for the sister too, the culprit, not only for the brothers. *grin* It was good that I was not drinking again at that time. I can hear my keyboard's relief on that. You have the nack to make random, hilarious things appear. Life-like, really.

I have forgotten much in the way of little details from earlier in the story, but, regardless, I do hope that in time Beleg would not interact with his kin more because of his guilt... That kind of attitude would not be permanent, and it would ruin many things in the long run instead. I am still a bit skittish when it comes to Eärnur, wondering when he will be taken/go to Numenor... But his being unintentionally ditched by the two segments of the group was amusing in a way. People usually cluster in accordance to gender, languages and interests, indeed... Poor ellon.

The bit about Gilvagor was surprising. I do not know if you have said something about him earlier in the story... Here you put the sea-longing as a kind of random illness, like the flu, also. It is quite interesting; but what do you make of that? People in Lindon surely went to the sea at some point, so why were not all of them affected by the sea-longing - like Legolas was, towards the end of the War of the Rings? This illness brought more spice to the story, though, and I wonder if there will be something to do later in the story regarding that - healing or something else. And speaking of the sea... I do wish Ulmo or his Maiar would come some time in the story. You have many instances of interaction between the people of some Valar - and the Valar themselves - but not this particular people...

The government in Tol Eressëa was quite interesting; rather like the Laketown before and after Smaug's time. I do not know if I have said that before; if I have, then I would like to reiterate it again. :) Quite a good solution, actually (to me, at least) with the island being a melting pot of many interests and cultures and whatnot, like someone from the contingent said in the last chapter. (I think, and I am sorry that I cannot provide you with a name. :embarrassed:)

The rumor that Manwen and Laurendil had been made prisoners by the Amaneldi was shocking. Hmm. I wonder who spread all those outrageous rumors around... This was not the first time. I feel that you are setting us readers up for something. Anyhow, I hope it will be resolved soon; say, in the next 10 chapters, at most. The suspense is killing me slowly but surely!

And speaking of suspense, I had better go on to the next chapter. *grin* Who knows if it has the point of views of other groups... (Oh wait. You and the other readers know. :sheepish:)

Author Reply: Eärnur won't be heading for Númenor until very late in the Second Age, about four hundred or so years before the Downfall, so you needn't worry about him yet. His travails won't happen for millennia yet.

I see sea-longing as being something inherent within the elves but not necessarily triggered simply because they happen to residing by the sea. It can be something that comes to the fore at any time, else the elves of Lindon and the Grey Havens would have gone West a long time ago.

The rumors surrounding Laurendil and Manwen may or may not be resolved. Sometimes other things in life interfere and some things are left at the wayside. We'll have to see if anything comes of it.

I wonder if Gil-Galad has been reborn and if not, why? He certainly should be IMHO. I can feel for Eärnur as I’ve been in that position myself.

While I am thoroughly enjoying the meeting of the elves and the determination to resolve all misunderstandings, I am sure someone is out there ready to throw a monkey wrench into the mix. It always happens that way.

Hope you get your computer up and running soon. I have quite a bit of reading to do after returning from a two week vacation, so it will be a while before I’ve caught up.

Author Reply: Gil-galad is still alive at this time. We are only in the early part of the Second Age. He does not die until the end of the age almost 3000 years later.

My internet is still out and will be for at least another month so I am using an internet cafe, coming in once a week to answer emails, post chapters and reply to reviews, so take your time catching up. *grin*

Atar Fiondil,

Sorry about the late review!

I love Tavrobel's description...now I want a picture of it. *grin* I see I'm not the only one who loved this line:

"Tell us about Finrod Felagund," she said. "Is he really as handsome and noble as all the ballads say?"

*grin* Of course he is, he's Finda. Amarie is the perfect person to ask *lol*

I was dismayed to hear reports of Laurendil being taken "prisoner" by the Amaneldi though...waiting to see what will happen next. Indeed the Tol Eresseans are not the only ones who need healing, the Amaneldi need it, too.

Tye-melin,

Kaylee!

Author Reply: Hi Kaylee. Sorry, no photos of Tavrobel. You will have to make do with your own imagination. *grin* I did model the description of the homes on wooden houses I saw while traveling through Siberia last summer. Many of them had turquoise-painted shutters and doors.

Everyone needs healing, both in Aman and on Tol Eressea. We will see how it all comes out in the end.

Tye-melin.

Still romours abound - and interessting new ones. But it is astounding what people are ready to believe.

I guess it will be long time, even for elves until all parties are ready to live with each other.

Author Reply: Hi Hel. Yes, I think it will be a while myself, though certainly before the Second Age ends.

This is all very intriguing with all of the rumors. I do wonder who started them and why as well as what wil happen to them once the kings get ahold of them. Wouldn't it be horrible if the rumors came from folks from Aman trying to keep the division between the two lands as deep as possible?

I loved the romantic notions of how handsome is Finrod anyway there at eh end. that was too funny! and It was probably comething that was likely to happen. It is amazing how much we can romanticize folks in song and legend.

I liked the parents we meet in this chapter, too. They are suitably alarmed by they why learn, but yet they are willing to talk and listen. I wonder how many others will be so willing to listen to what is being said by those of Aman?

Can't wait for more! Do you have to post only once a week?

Author Reply: Hmm... well as to who is spreading the rumors and why, that remains to be seen. Even *I* don't know all the particulars. Theee Elves are a cagey lot and keep things close to their chests. You have no idea what I go through just to get a *name* out of them! *lol*

Anyway, Nimbrethil is still quite young by elvish lights and so is in that romantic stage that young females tend to go through at some point in their development. And let's face it, Finrod is a very romantic (in the older sense of the word, i.e. a fit subject for 'medieval romance') character, which is why he's always been my favorite First-Age Elf.

I'm glad you like the parents. They are both Noldor who feel that they no longer are worthy to belong in Valinor because of their history. Their children's story, though, will go a long way towards healing their bitterness.

Do you have to post once a week?

At least it's not once a year, like some people do! *lol* Be grateful for that, at least.

This chapter was a real life saver for me (to be frank up until now this day sucked, but reading the new chapter brightened the day!)

Do we dare have Glorfindel and Finrod in the same group indeed: the bet is still on (as I said, my money´s on Glorfindel... though maybe Finrod will keep him out of trouble :) )

Already looking for ward to more!

Greetings, Thalanee

Author Reply: Hi, Thalanee. Sorry to hear your day was not too good, but glad that this chapter helped brighten it a bit. As for who will be causing trouble, Glorfindel or Finrod, that remains to be seen and we won't know for a couple of weeks as the next chapter will describe what happens with Arafinwë's and Olwë's groups.

The spread of misinformation is very interesting. Now to learn who started it, and who benefits by it being spread!

Author Reply: Indeed, so, Larner. Hopefully, such information will eventually come to light and the kings can deal with it and those spreading the misinformation.

Hi Fiondil,

Hmmm...there are several little teasers in this chapter that I hope we may hear about later on.

I'm hoping that Eäralato will not need the ring Gilvagor left with him, but I'm also busy thinking up ways the ring might be significant in later chapters. But yes, that scene was a bit of an eyeopener, to say the least. I think Gilvagor may at some time in the future be quite a fount of information for Glorfindel.

I did a mental wince when I heard Haldir's and Olwë's remarks to the young ellyn. I am glad they took it in stride and were agreeable, as it did sound very much like an order--especially what Olwë said. I had visions of a mini-rebellion taking place and the Progress grinding to a halt before it had hardly started.

The suspicions of Boromir and Morwen are sad to hear, but understandable under the circumstances. It is really hard to know what is "right" when living in a veritable vacuum as far as information goes, or even if only one side of a story is told. I like Eregil's comment, "better late than never." I think it was good that he let the Tol Eressëan's know he is only recently reborn, with the implication that he has literally been plunked in the middle of whatever misunderstadings and disputes exist between the Tol Eressëans and the Amaneldi.

Oh yes, it sounds like a big order for Sador and Laurendil to have to keep both Glorfindel and Finrod in line. Hopefully we'll find out next week if that was necessary.

And lastly, I want to know how Amarië answers Nimbrethil's question-if only for the reason that it would let us know a little more about how she see's Finrod now that things are going well between them and the wedding date has been set, no matter how far in the future that may be. *grin*

As always, well done! And I know you realize you're an expert at leaving your readers anticipating the next chapter...there's always more to find out and I can't wait!

Thank Fiondil.

Joanne

Author Reply: Hi, Joanne. You're right that Gilvagor (and others) will be a font of information for Glorfindel as he eventually prepares for his return to Middle-earth.

Yet another person who thinks Olwë was issuing an order at the six ellyn. *shakes head* Maybe, but I think Olwë was just making a suggestion, offering the services of his people to help them move their camp, nothing more. And I think the six ellyn secretly wanted to be stay the night at the camp so even if it did sound like an order to them they would have accepted anyway. *grin*

The Tol Eressëans have a number of Reborn among them who are clueless about the animosities that are festering on the island, especially since they have been in greater contact with the Amaneldi who cared for them in Lórien. Eregil pointing out that he's so new to Life again that he doesn't even know if he would be welcome among the Tol Eressëans (with the unspoken implication that he already has been welcomed among the Amaneldi with whom he is traveling) is a reminder to Boromir and Morwen that not all who might reside in Tol Eressëa feel towards the Amandeldi as they do.

The saga of Finrod and Glorfindel won't be revealed for a couple of weeks, unfortunately, so you'll have to rein in your impatience just a little longer. *grin* I'm glad though that you are looking forward to what happens next. Hopefully, I will not disappoint.

I think I'll leave it to the imagination of the readers what Amarië's (and Alassiel's) response to Nimbrethil's query about Finrod was. Or maybe I'll have Nimbrethil meet Finrod in a future chapter and she can see for herself. *grin*

Just read Sunny's review and had to laugh, it's not just the young teenagers who moon over Orlando Bloom, there are a few of us not so young ones who do to!
Ah me!
Lynda

Author Reply: Yeah, I know a few 'not so young ones' who are rabid Orlando Bloom fans myself. *grin*

Hm, I could see some people making that interpritation of Laurendil and Manwen's failure to retun to Tol Eressea, there are still those who want to cause trouble, for their own reasons, none of which are clear to me! Some people just like to stir things up and watch the ants scurry.
Me thinks Nimbrethiel has something of a crush on our Finrod, Amarie had better watch out for screaming fan girls :<)!
It is a pity that there has not been more communication between the Amanaldi and the Tol Eresseans, a lot of the misinformation could have been prevented if there had been, it seems almost deliberate as there must have been some contact since they do receive some supplies from Aman, food especially, since I don't think Tol Eressea is arable enough to support a large population.
Hope Finrod and Glorfi behave them selves!
More please,
Lynda
Hope this makes it to you, my internet connection has been a bit iffy since last night, apparantly it is system wide and not just me!

Author Reply: Hi Lynda. The reasons for causing trouble never have to be clear to those who are not the troublemakers. Often, such reasons as given make no sense to those of us who are on the outside of these little groups. And sometimes, the only reason is there is no reason. People feed on their own hatreds to the point where even they don't really know why they do what they do. The insecurities of the Tol Eressëans coupled by the unwelcome of the Amandeldi (either deliberate or not) has festered into something dark and potentially dangerous. Tol Eressëa, having once been part of Middle-earth is more tainted by Morgoth's evil than Aman itself, and therein may lie the problem. Even the island needs cleansing.

The interaction of the two groups of Elves has been very limited in the 500 years since Tol Eressëa was opened up to the Elves of Middle-earth and 500 years for Elves isn't all that long. Arafinwë and Olwë unfortunately did not really take the time to examine the situation on the island until now. Perhaps had they kept a closer eye on things the problmes they are facing would not have arisen or be less of a problem than they are. (Of course, had they done so, there would be no story *grin*.)

We will have to wait a couple of more weeks to see what Finrod and Glorfi get up to as next week we'll see what happens with Arafinwë's and Olwë's groups.
