Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 24 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 36 on 6/24/2014
Oh, good, at least the three made it safely to Fairbanks.

Now that's unexpected to learn that the twins can detect the Maiar when barely anyone else of the Elves can. Might give the Valinóreans something to think about, too, if they knew ... In any case, even if I wish it weren't the case, I fear he's right and keeping watch might be a good idea. Even more so considering Glorfindel's insistence to get to them.

No matter how well-meant it is, that way of influencing Elladan makes me a bit uncomfortable. Why can the Maiar not just *tell* them what they want, instead of taking them over like that? It's not as if they can't incarnate and talk to them, after all.

So there is a SCA group in Fairbanks? Thanks to Dreamflower I had at least an idea what that is, though the explanation the trio got was welcome. Hm, that sounds like another way of training for the Dagor Dagorath, you know. Which is probably why you introduced them?

Gwyn ... the name reminds me of Gwynneth or however that was spelled. Somehow I have my suspicions about that guy – and why he did what he did.

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. The Maiar were on a schedule as they say and they needed to get the Twins to the fight practice without wasting time arguing about it. And they did get permission, both from the Valar and from Elladan. At any rate, no real harm done.

The SCA is all over the world and there are several groups in Germany, most of them I think connected to various military bases.

Gwynneth is a girl's name though properly it should be Gwenneth, since "y" is considered a "masculine vowel" in Welsh and many names in the language are the same for both genders except for the "y" and "e" differentiation. Thus, Arwen, is an actual Welsh name, but it does have a masculine equivalent, Arwyn.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Who is this Gwyn? I was surprised that this was a man, since the only Gwyn I know is a woman. Oh, well, I can make that adjustment. Is he another elf or a Maia? Obviously, the twins need some help in calming down. This group seems to be too conveniently meeting outdoors and the strange way they got there left me wondering.

I guess I just have to read on since the next chapters are already posted.

Author Reply: Well, by the time you read this response, you'll know who Gwyn is. *grin* In Welsh, Gwyn is considered a man's name. The feminine equivalent is Gwen; both names means 'white'. A lot of names in the Celtic languages, particularly Irish and Welsh, that in those languages are considered masculine, have become gender-neutral as parents have given such names to girl children in recent years (especially here in America), so I can understand your confusion.

Thanks for leaving a review, obsidianj. It's appreciated.

I meant to leave a comment here earlier and forgot! Oh well... placing my bet on Gwyn being an Elf is rather anticlimactic now, but I love the idea that the Twins could sense a Maia because of their heritage; then again, the Maiar following them aren't exactly subtle! And the possible excursion to Dul Guldur? Oh, those plot bunnies!

I found the discussion of Umaiar scent interesting, and think it would be along the lines of something that once was beautiful but is now corrupted. So perhaps a scent that begins as fresh or sweet, but ends cloying and sickly sweet, decayed. (I was actually thinking of a scent like burning marijuana - to me, it starts as a "green" scent, but seems to turn into a scent that you can taste, and triggers the gag reflex.)

Author Reply: Hi Lyana. I think you're right about the Umaiarin scenta being corrupted. While there are plenty of plants that naturally give off a stink of one kind or another, I think realistically, the scent of an Umaia would still be whatever the original scent was but now cloying and sickly sweet and we've all had that experience with fruit going bad. It's an interesting concept. And yes, the possible excursion of the Twins to Dol Guldur would make an interesting tale in and of itself. A very nice gap filler if anyone is so inclined. *grin* Thanks for your thoughts. They're much appreciated.

A very interesting twist to the story. I can't wait to find out more.
I really liked the bit about 'blood speaks to blood" Well, the twins have always been favorites of mine, but I do think they had abilities and power as a rightful inheritance of their bloodlines.
Also, about traveling down the Silverlode to a strange country...I do think Lothlorien is meant. It would have been strange to men, hobbits and dwarves. I can imagine that along with their maybe scouting Dol Guldur a bit, they would have taken the opportunity to inform their grandparents of the happenings. And said hello.

Author Reply: Hello ainisarie. I'm glad you like this particular twist in the story. It will prove important later on. And while, I agree, that the Twins would have stopped in Lórien to inform their grandparent of the situation and all, I have no doubt that their ultimate destination was Dol Guldur to see if any of the Nazgul had returned there. Anyway, thanks for reviewing. It's much appreciated.

Hey, MikoNoNyte, Umaiar can have floral scents and still be appropriately stinky!

And in anticipation of Monday, a lesson in How To Fight Fair :D

Author Reply: There are lots of stinky plants out there, so you're right about that, Sunny.

LOL! I love that movie and the commentary on this scene was hysterical. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure others will get a kick out seeing this.

My first comment was lost cause the wifi on the train flitzed off. Drat. Anyway, I liked the twist in this chapter. The SCA people might be slightly more inclined to accept the Elves... although their leader seems to be a dark horse.
Looking forward very much how things will turn out.

Author Reply: Hi Soledad. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. We'll see more of the SCA in subsequent chapters and we'll learn more about Gwyn as well. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Hi Fiondil,
I was wondering if you would put the SCA in the series. I like everyone's idea of putting the Valinorians in it as a mutual exchange of culture. It seems like a nearly perfect solution (unless the Valinor Elves think they're toooooo above teaching "clueless mortals).
I know *you* already know who Gwinn is but I think the idea of several Elves left in Arda that never saw the Elf Academy web site is perfectly likely, and I'm sure we'll meet more Elves even in Alaska. Also, people being people, you know there has to be lots and lots of little half-elves and varying levels of mixed bloods all over the place. Perhaps Gwinn is one of those.

Catching up on dishes is a wonderful way to meet people at a party. When I'm feeling out of place that's where I often go, and I always have amazing conversations with people while I'm there. See you at the sink!
Thanks for the nonalcoholic beverages BTW!
The Dude abides...

Author Reply: Hi Diana. The SCA and Elves seem to be a perfect match, IMO. We'll see how it goes. And I suspect there are more Elves residing in Middle-earth than we know about, at least the Valar have been saying so all along. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Just realized that Winter's Gate is another name for the Autumn Solstice, and the name of the S.C.A. group is Barony of Winters Gate....

Dada, Dada, Dada, Dada ...

Just who is Gwyn? (I know, I know wait till Monday!)

I think we need to come to some arrangement about clean up at the Cliff House, I volunteer to do the dishes if some one else will dust and sweep or sweep and dust, cuts down on the dusting that way, everybody cleans up their own trash!

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Hi Lynda. Well, I didn't make the name up. The Barony actually exists. And we'll find out who Gwyn is soon enough, I promise. Hugs back.

Barony of Winter's Gate might be a good place for some of the "new" elves to branch out and learn while they teach. And they might be able to open a new chapter at Wiseman :D Giving even more of the elves a place to teach and to learn. I wondered at first if the leader (I can't think of his name now, sorry) was a Dunedin decedent.

Author Reply: Hi Laer. I'm sure Dan and Roy and Sarah understand all the implications of what the SCA could be for them in Wiseman. We'll learn about Gwyn and his story in the next chapter. Thanks for taking the time to review. I appreciate it.

This made my day!! I am so excited the SCA was brought in hahaha! Can't help but wonder if these lovely people will join the army of Wiseman. It will definitely expand their territory so to speak, but this group itself could help train other people.

As always, I look forward to reading the next installment.

~Lin

Author Reply: I thought it would, Lin. *grin* We'll see how the SCA or more particularly the Barony of Winter's Gate fits into the whole Dagor Dagorath preparation scheme. Thanks for reading and reviewing. It's much appreciated.
