"It will be easy, Uncle Bilbo," Pippin grinned, "What I lost doesn’t look like anything else that you ever saw so if you see it, you’ll know!" The perplexing child took his hand and began leading him toward the trees that lined the small road. "All you have to do is look for things that aren’t supposed to be here." Bilbo scratched his head with his free hand. "If I find this thing like no other, Pippin, then I shall know what it is." Now he was starting to sound like Pippin! This wasn’t at all encouraging. "You said that you couldn’t tell me what it is, so if I find it, won’t that be a problem?" This is one of my favorite parts! I love the logic (or illogic) of Pippin.

I realized from the prologue this was an older story, and NO, no one forced me to read it. You MIGHT remember it is up for a MEFA, you know! And this year's MEFA's have allowed me to read some of the older stories of some of my favorite writers that I'd not read before, you realize. Thanks for this story, and yes, I try to revisit some older tales as well as current ones from time to time, and will try to find more of yours once the MEFAs are past. And I'd love to see how you rework that chapter. Author Reply: I keep forgetting that this got nominated for a MEFA. In fact, I was very surprised when that happened. I hope I do get to rework that chapter. It has always annoyed me. LOL I will let you know when and if I manage it and thank you for reading.

Personally, I suspect that Bilbo found it during his own walks, and that he's known for some time Merry had it, and so returned it himself. But for Pippin the magic itself returned it, so that's good enough! Nice to see this story unfold. Author Reply: Ages ago, after I wrote this story, there was a third one in the works. (Save us!) I had it nearly completed and had neglected to hit 'save' while writing it. Something went wrong with my computer and I lost most of the story! I tried to rewrite it but it just never seemed the same to me and although I have it saved to my computer I never posted it. It was to contain the answer to your question about Bilbo as well as a final wrap-up about that mysterious coin. Maybe someday I'll finish re-working it and post it. (There's a scary thought!) Thank you so much for reading this and for reviewing all of it! I did enjoy your reviews and it was fun seeing an old story get some attention!

Yes, let Merry save him the next time! Heh! Author Reply: I do think it's Merry's turn now. Frodo has done his part in this.

Poor little Hobbit! Author Reply: I know. Sometimes I want to go back and rewrite this chapter because it really doesn't seem to fit the way I see them now. In fact I have given lots of thought to reworking this part because it seems too unhobbit-like to me.

I can certainly feel with dear Merry here! Poor kid--scared himself, and now having to listen as Pippin turns the tale all around. Am glad he managed to get himself down all right with a bit of instruction from Frodo, though. Now, to find the coin! Author Reply: Yes, Merry really doesn't enjoy heights at all. He is lucky that Frodo doesn't mind them or Pippin might still be up that tree.

Oops, it appears Toby knows Pippin a bit better than Pippin likes. He certainly knows how to push the small Took's buttons, doesn't he? Poor lad--stuck in the tree until Merry and Frodo find him, I'll bet! Now, hopefully that won't take TOO long. But where is that dratted coin? Heh! Author Reply: Toby has Pippin's number all right. I think he's won this round. As to the rescue, well, you may be onto something there. And that coin is being rather stubborn isn't it?

I take it Pippin is once more out looking for the Wizard's coin. At least Frodo and Merry get a jolly moment to themselves, something I suspect hasn't happened for a while. Author Reply: Yes, Frodo and Merry have minute or two here but I am afraid like in all of my stories it won't last long...

Aha! Now those little cold feet are where they belong, and Frodo MIGHT get some sleep where he got no nice hot bowl of mushrooms! Poor lad! Author Reply: Denying a hobbit his mushrooms shouldn't be allowed! Frodo deserves sleep and mushrooms just for not beating the crap out of both of his cousins.

Talking of needing privies led to needing privies? Heh! Poor Bilbo and Frodo--caught between this pair/1 Author Reply: Yes, Frodo would have been wise to run for Hobbiton and take Bilbo with him. These two are not going to make his life easy. On the other hand, he may want them later on for that big Quest thing. hehehe
