Trust a Brandybuck and a Took!  by Grey Wonderer 17 Review(s)

I love these two so much! You put just the right words into Pippin's mouth. I like how you portrayed Farmer Maggot, and how firm and fair he was with Merry. I have my own "Farmer Maggot" as it were near my house, and my best friend and I love running through those corn fields. After reading this story, however, I won't be tempted to steal anything. Interesting how these stories seem to affect my life. I had heard that this particular farmer near my house grew excellent strawberries, and I had considered going strawberry-hunting this spring for fun. (and to be like Merry and Pippin, I thought.) Well, I won't be doing that. Someone may count on those strawberries for their next meal. Thank you for teaching me that, Grey Wonderer.:)

Author Reply: This story was written from a plot bunny of Lindelea's and I truly enjoyed writing it. I am very glad that you enjoyed reading it. I am also glad that it left an impression of a sort. I never gave much thought to those sorts of things myself until recently. Thank you for reading and for reviewing this.

Splendid! I loved the way that Pippin, for being too young, went to look after Merry. At least he wasn't sneaking about and didn't get in trouble as well, although I doubt Merry would have let Pippin get in trouble when he really wasn't involved.

I liked how you wrote the Maggot family! I would love to see more of them *hinthint* ;) Merry's bad turned out good, saved the Farmer and his family the stolen food and taught Merry a wonderful lesson that I'm sure he'll take with him into the Mastership!

The end was a nice touch about Frodo not knowing about Merry's adventures and Merry not knowing about Frodo's well done! It was nice to see where such a seemingly unlikely friendship might have come from.

Author Reply: I enjoyed writing the Maggots and I may just have to use them again in the future now that they are good friends with Merry and Pippin. So glad you enjoyed this one and thank you for the lovely reviews!

I thought I had reviewed this the day you posted it! But what probably happened is I read it through, started to write a review, and got interrupted.

I love this story; it makes so much sense that one of the things that would motivate Merry to choose good would be his father's good name, and another would be Pippin looking up to him and emulating his actions.

Very well done! And thanks for bringing this bunny to life, and putting up with my nit-picking, too.

Author Reply: Not a cornfield in sight! LOL I do thank you for the Beta and the Bunny. Next time I adopt a bunny I will have to stick with it and post it sooner. This little rabbit had to wait a bit too long for me to get it finished. In the end, it was the nit-picking that made the story come out the way that it did.

I'm glad Merry owed up to his word and that he convinced the other lads of Brandy Hall to stop their raiding. And Pippin was as adorable as ever, coming to his Merry's defense. I especially loved this part:

“You needed lookin’ after,” Pippin said. “You’re a lot of trouble, you know that?”

“I know,” Merry said, grinning.

“Good thing I’m so responsible or we’d both be in trouble,” Pippin said, teasingly. “You’d better keep me around until you grow up a bit.”

Merry laughed. “And then what will I do with you?”

“Finish helping me grow up, of course,” Pippin smiled, and Merry put an arm around his little cousin.

Those two are just too precious.

Author Reply: I believe that even though he is younger, Pippin tries his best to look out for Merry though most of the time, Merry winds up doing the looking out for Pippin. In this case, Pippin got a chance to be the responsible one, though he would have rather been included in the raid. LOL Thanks for reading and I am very glad that you liked it.

I loved this! Farmer Maggot is a wise farmer and knew that talking sense to Merry would make the other Brandybuck lands behave too! A very nice glimpse of how the friendshiop between Maggot and Merry was. :D

Author Reply: Thank you. Lindelea donated this plot bunny and she also did the Beta for me. I enjoyed writing this one very much and I am glad that you liked it.

I reckon it's a good thing that Merry was caught on his first time out. And that he is an honest decent hobbit, who is bright enough to realise why this is a dirty game - once it is pointed out to him.

And I love the way Pippin supports him and proves, by his confession to Otis, that he does take note of the way Merry behaves and imitates him. What better way to make Merry realise that he must be an honourable Brandybuck and an upright, honest example for his cousin.

Good story. Like it a lot.

Author Reply: Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. I do think that by the age of 23 Merry would be responsible enough to know that Pippin was following his every move. I also think that folks in the general area of Buckland would be expecting him to live up to the family responsibilities whether he was ready to do so or not. Thank you for the lovely review.

HTML tags, the things you have to put everywhere into a text to make it a HTML text, sorry, kind of a tautological non-explanation, but I'm really not able to explain something like that in English. And quite a lot of those are left in the text, for example after your signature:

"G.W. begun 03/09/2005 and finished on 06/29/2005

"

Perhaps you just can't see them - or perhaps you see all of them? - in writer modus, just have a look at it as a normal reader who is not a member *takes a deep breath* would ...

Thanks for your nice answer!

Author Reply: Thank you for your help. I can't see them at all when I click on the story to read it on the site as I would with another author's fiction and I also can't see them on the preview option when I am signed in and reading. I don't use them at all when I post because I have no clue how they work. I post using the copy and paste method. I write it all out on Microsoft Word and then copy it and paste it to the section where you post stories then I click to post it. I am sure there is a better way to post but I know very little about formatting as you have seen. LOL I will check again. Maybe I can get someone to help me out. I have a couple of friends that would be able to deal with the ins and outs of formatting.

Again, thank you for reading this and for the computer help.

A nice story...I like that Pippin came back for merry when the other's wouldn't... Merry told his father and prevented others from touching Maggots garden...After all he was protecting the Brandybuck name...

Nice read...

This was brilliant!! Poor Pippin--but we've all been there wanting to impress our friends. I thought you handled Merry's "thieving" very well. LOL...fainting like a lass! And Farmer Maggot was MUCH easier on Merry than he was with poor Frodo--ouch! I liked how you allowed Merry to see his erring ways through Maggot's expanation. I desperately tried to convey that in one of my wee tales; that niether of these lads "needed" to be stealing crops.

Awesome tale!

Author Reply: I know the story that you mean, it was the one I nominated for the MEFAs. I like that one. This one came about in response to Lindelea's bunny and her Beta really helped this one take shape. Strangely, it is the only crop stealing story that I have written and you would think that B&T would have been full of them by now. LOL Thanks for the review and for reading this one. I am glad that you liked it. It was fun filling in the gap concerning Maggot and Merry and their friendship.
