"love at first smell" - what a delightful expression! Great poem, I like it very much. Author Reply: Thank you! I'm not much of a poet, and in fact this was my first attempt at anything that doesn't exist for the characters in-verse. So I really appreciate your compliments!

She is almost ready for that adventure, even if it is merely a trip out to Bree and back again. Dear Kira--all good things WILL come to her in the end. Hope she can fit a bottle of wine in there as well, to toast the Birthday when it comes. Author Reply: There are still a few things that Kira needs before she can have an adventure, the chiefest of which is a heart in the right place. Till she knows exactly what it is that she wants, I don't think that a trip, even only to Bree, would do much good.

Start saving, Kira, and keep dreaming! I'm with you! Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Yes, but even if she did have them, she'd have to wait six years before she could do anything with them, and even then there'd be all the people she's leaving behind and no guarantee that she'd be happy...

Oh, this is good, to see things from Rosemary's perspective for once! Author Reply: Thanks! I've finally got things lined up where Kira can begin to see things from her mother's perspective, and I realized that I should probably set her a good example and actually get in the hobbit's mind. (Previously I've understood where she's coming from, but never actually written anything from her p.o.v.)

It's late for her to come to this realization, almost too late. If she only knew that Kira's forged her own prospects and that her bookishness is the mainstay of it. It's not the kind of prospects her mother would ever understand, and that's where it's so sad. All Rosemary has wanted for Kira is security, never considering there is more to it than that. Author Reply: Whether it's too late or not depends entirely on Rosemary's ability to revise her behavior, which can be really difficult this many years into the game. Especially because she has no idea that Kira has her own plans, because Kira will never tell her. In case you can't tell, I'm doing a lot of work on their relationship right now. I've always felt really bad for Rosemary, but I think it's hard for readers--especially in modern society--to understand her perspective. Probably because almost everything I write is written from Kira's.

Aww...this is *so* Kira! She really is such a romantic! (And I mean that in the old-fashioned sense, and not the modern one.) Author Reply: She really is! Thank you!

I raised my glass of orange juice (since I drink nothing stronger) and silently spoke to him. I wonder how many others made their own toasts? Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Who knows? I'm just glad to see Kira holding her own little celebration since it's canon there was nothing done in public in the Shire...

Oh, I love this idea of Kira paying a silent tribute to Frodo! Wonderful! Author Reply: I really couldn't see her not doing something like that, not on his birthday which she knows is celebrated outside the Shire.

Kerry is so wise and so practical and long-thinking...somehow it makes me think he takes a good deal after his magnificent ancestor. Author Reply: I've always loved the practicality of Merry Brandybuck, so it wasn't too difficult to guess that he very practically made sure that some of those traits would be passed down to his descendants.
