Spring Awakenings  by daw the minstrel 28 Review(s)

*Karen, save me a front row seat!*

Ok, have I mentioned how much I aboslutely love Beliond being present? I am still laughing over him - he is like Oscar the Grouch - completely adorably grouchy.

And I like Tuilinn. Now Legolas gets to hope he gets posted North next so he can search her out while on patrol!

Please, please - two things: I want Beliond to have a discussion with Thranduil and I want someone to take Tinar down a notch or two!!

Author Reply: Yes, I think you did say how much you enjoyed reading about Beliond! I suspect he's much more amusing to you and me than he is to Legolas, who has to live with him all the time.

I don't know if I can put Beliond in the same room with Thranduil. The Elven king is likely to be in a bit of a temper as it is.

Well, I didn't see that coming...or is it Tuilinn going? Ah, the mystery elleth. From somewhere up north. I don't think she's gone for good. (Is she?) She'll pop back up when Legolas least expects it. (Won't she?)

I was glad to see Beliond show up. I mean really...what was Thranduil thinking sending Legolas off without his 'shadow'? He's such a lovable grouch. And so good at putting Tinar in his place. I don't think that Elf has a brain cell that fires right. He's dumber than a dead tree limb. You'd think he would have caught on by now. Guess not. Of course, Beliond will have everyone set straight if given the time and opportunity. He has his 'speech' prepared already. I don't think I've mentioned lately how much I love Beliond...so just for good measure...

I'm looking forward to returning to the palace. I guess Legolas will get back in time to witness Storm Thranduil blowing through. So much for a relaxing few days before he has to return to his patrol. I have a feeling he'll be ready to battle orcs. Much less threatening...

Good chapter, daw. Forgive me for not getting to the other two I missed while away, but when this new chapter went up, I decided to just get in the current groove. But, they were a pleasure to read as always.

Okay, I've got my front row seat ready. Let the fireworks begin. :>) Karen

Author Reply: Karen-- you have been such a kind, consistent reviewer that you are excused from reviewing anything you don't feel like reviewing!!

The fun part of making Tuilinn go away is that I can use her again or not, depending on how I feel. It would be fun to have her show up at an inopportune moment for Legolas.

Thranduil probably thought he was sending Legolas off on a safe, if slightly tense, mission. Beliond will have to let him know how mistaken he was. And the king will be in such a good mood to hear it too!

Sigh..... So Legolas and Tuilinn are not meant to be.. (Yes!) lol... I am very glad to hear about Legolas not well you know... lol...

Anyr frustrates even me.. He reminds me of someone that I know who is like that rather unknowingly... He doesn't realise the things that he says are so well vauge... lol... But anyway... Legolas is going home:-) Am happy...

Author Reply: Legolas should arrive home some time around mid-day. That means that there has been the whole morning for Eilian to break his news and for Thranduil and the rest of the family to react. I suspect Legolas will find things somewhat less settled than they usually are in his home!

Yeh, Beliond! So nice to have him around again, if only to annoy 'Lord' Legolas to distraction, and to put Tinar in his subserviant place. I am glad you have solved the mystery of the stolen food - what a couple of clowns those thieves were. I couldn't help but laugh as I was reading their little encounter with Legolas. They are lucky to escape without arrow holes in them. Legolas is really a sweet, little softie, isn't he? I mean, to feel guilty about his rough treatment of the thieves. I guess that's why we all love him so much. A very entertaining chapter.

P.S. I wouldn't mind being around too when Beliond lectures Thranduil about the irresponsibility of sending Legolas off on a mission without his 'nana'. Really, what was Thranduil thinking of?!

Author Reply: Beliond turned out to be a lot of fun to write about even though he was grouchy. And then, he immediately knew what Legolas was feeling about Tuilinn. I think he knows Legolas pretty well by now and has a lot of affection for him.

Bad tempered Legolas is actually oddly appealing. Something must be wrong with me if I think that! Somehow, I don't think Thranduil is going to be in the mood to be lectured by anyone. ;-)

Daw, this was a *great* chapter! There was so much to love about it that I couldn't name all of the things that I love without repeating the entire chapter. Thank you for bringing Beliond into this story! He was just the comic relief needed in this chapter.

Poor Legolas. Tuilinn was the perfect "love" interest for him. You did well with that...I don't remember anyone saying that they hate her! I'm glad that he was able to take a moment of happiness with her.

I think I have fallen in love with your newest version of Legolas-the king's son is much to be admired (and not too bad to look upon, either!).

Author Reply: Thank you, naneth. Nilmandra begged for Beliond to appear and then he turned out to be great grouchy fun. I'm just glad I'm not Legolas, who has to live with the guy most of the time.

I don't think Tuilinn was around long enough to be hated, but still, I take that as victory! And masterful, royal Legolas is really pretty compelling, I find. I'll have to show him more often.

Great to see Legolas being masterful again - he was great with the thieves. The fact that he enjoyed pushing them around, then felt guilty, was a nice touch.

Tinar hasn't learned, has he? He still argues about orders! I hope someone pushes him in the river on the way to Esgaroth.

I liked Legolas carefully not looking as Tuilinn changed, but I was right to be concerned when he couldn't find her. Maybe in your next story he goes in search of her. BTW, it always sounds odd to me when you call her a 'caretaker'. It makes perfect sense as she is one who takes care of the children, but in the UK a caretaker is what you'd call a janitor. It makes me see her in blue overalls carrying a mop ;)

Author Reply: In the US, a caretaker is someone who looks after a property for the owner. Tuilinn would be a babysitter or day care worker, but I wanted a word that would seem slightly foreign to us, and 'caretaker' seemed a likely candidate!

My beta wants very bad things to happen to Tinar. I think that's appropriate. I just haven't decided what they should be yet.

on ff.net it said that you updated but the chapter was not available! How irratating! That was an excellent chapter! I do hope that Thranduil is proud of Legolas. He has certainly worked hard on his vacation! I am also anxious to see what happens with the Eilian and Celuwen situation!

Author Reply: Thranduil will either be so distracted by Eilian that he won't even notice that Legolas has returned, or he'll be in such a bad mood that he swats everyone in his way. Or maybe Eilian has made Legolas look good! What are brothers for? ;-)

French PonyReviewed Chapter: 10 on 4/12/2004
Oh, but Legolas does know somebody who hates the niceties of diplomacy more than Beliond. That would be his own dear middle brother, the one who thinks with the head that does not sit on his shoulders. But I rather enjoy the niceties of diplomacy on occasion, and I like that little fudging to account for the exchange without calling it regulated trade.

Mountie Legolas has gotten his Men with flair and style. Sadly, looting often follows upon the heels of disaster. I wonder if there is an Elf equivalent to the National Guard that can be called out to keep the peace in situations like this. This time, all was well only by virtue of Legolas happening to be in the right place at the right time. But sending the National Guard out to disaster areas might have prevented the looting to begin with. Hmm. Maybe Thranduil will form one and place the new bridegroom at the head of it.

Count on Beliond to turn up just in the nick of time, like the cavalry. His appearance came thisclose to smacking of deus ex machina, but I think you explained it well enough that it is safe from that.

And Tuilinn vanishes, much like Captain Kirk's various and sundry alien babes, because The Hero cannot be tied down for long. . .

If you feel that my rant to Sólith was worth saving, then go right ahead with it. It's just common sense, though, from one who knows.

Author Reply: I believe you are right, FP! Eilian probably is more impatient with diplomacy than Beliond is. He might enjoy it if it felt like a game, but he wouldn't have much patience for careful word choice.

In all truth, Beliond is there because my beta begged to see him again. And I was glad she did because he provided most of the comic relief for the chapter. I think Legolas probably could have managed without him, but it was nice for Beliond to see him in full princely mode.

Thranduil will undoubtedly have plans for Eilian once I get to that chapter, which is next.
