Very sweet story! You had me fooled several times, lol. AT first I thought it was during the Quest, then I thought it was pre-Quest until I finally found out it was post-Quest. Very cleverly done :D

Author Reply: Thank you! I hoped that their ages would come as a surprise when people read this one. Thank you for the sweet review!

I absolutely love this story! It's very cleverly written and the twist in the middle really made me smile. It's so sweet, and poignant too, to see them behaving no differently than two lads on an overnight trip, even though they're far from it - and I love that Pippin has a real reason for wanting to sleep next to Merry, and that he still needs his older cousin to comfort him.

I especially love this:

“That is one of my very favorite things to be, Pip,” Merry said, hugging his cousin. “Oh, and don’t worry that I will tell this to anyone. At my age, I will have likely forgotten it before we stop for lunch tomorrow. I can hardly be expected to remember this all the way to Gondor.”

Just wonderful. Thank you! :)

Author Reply: Even after all of that time had passed I do believe that both of them would still have some rather frightening memories and I do believe that the Palantir would have been the hardest for Pippin to forget. So glad that you enjoyed this one and that was one of my favorite lines as I was writing this one. I love it when Merry plays protector. Also pleased to see that the little surprise in the middle worked out as I had it planned.

That was very sweet! I liked the banter and easy between the two. Pippin being frightened and wanting Merry to just be his older cousin was too cute! The reason for Pip's unease being because of where they were camped made since. Merry first teasing he would tell everyone about it then admitting he probably wouldn't be able to remember it was great. Then Merry talking about the only way he could defent them made me laugh! It was very touching and made me want to cry, I had to refrain as there are too many people about ;) Thank you for the sweetness!

Author Reply: Thank you so much! I always look forward to your reviews and I am very pleased that you enjoyed this one. It was my first try at writing them when they are much older, but I didn't want to think that they had lost their sense of fun even then. Glad it made you laugh!

This is a beautifully written story and a point in time I've not seen much written about. Most well done!!!!!

Author Reply: Thank you! I usually see them written at the point that one of them dies, but I can't do that. I like to think that when they left the Shire to go to Rohan and Gondor they still had a few adventures ahead of them, both of them together. I am playing with the idea of trying to write more on this subject if all goes well, if not, I think leaving them at this point suits me just fine. Alive and well! Thanks for reviewing!

What a sweet story! It's lovely to know that the gentle, teasing ways of hobbits never leave them.

“Only just now, could you do me a favor and just be my older cousin, Merry who looks after me when I’m frightened?” Pippin requested, meekly sounding very like he had when he had been no more than a teen.

:D

Author Reply: Thanks so much. I like to think that those two were teasing and supporting one another all through their lives. It just makes me happy to think that. Seems that you agree with me on that.Thank you for the review!

Aaaww...you made me tear up.
When the story first opened I was a bit uncertain whether it was pre-Quest, or during the Quest--but if the latter, where was everyone else? Then it began to dawn on me just about the time you dropped in Merry's age...

I love this. It is so sweet, and the banter is so funny and dear, and so like our Brandybuck and Took throughout their lives.

*sniffle*

Author Reply: Oh, good you couldn't tell. I was actually hoping that their ages would come as a surprise in this one. I was trying to show that in spite of the passing years, Merry and Pippin were still much the same inside, if not on the outside. This is the first time I have dared to write them in their later lives. I am glad that you enjoyed it. At least the sniffling won't be likely to wake anyone. Thanks for the lovely review.
