This is wonderful, GW! I love spoiled faunt Pippin and jealous Merry and long-suffering Frodo. I had a spoiled younger cousin just like that and she always got her way too. LOL! And I love that Pippin kept and used the coin purse through the years. I'm sure it's the same purse Pippin brought with him on the Quest and kept his pipes in. I love that scene where he mentions the "treasure or two" he keeps close by. Now I'll think of Frodo's coin purse as one of the treasures :)

Author Reply: When I was writing this I thought of mentioning the pipes, but decided to go with toads, marbles and rocks instead. LOL I am sure this was the same purse though, or at least it was in my universe.
As to Pippin being spoiled, I do figure that he had to be. He just wasn't ruined by all of the attention because Merry and Frodo and other older children set him straight when he was older but at three I do think he must have run things his way. I also think that Merry might not have wanted 'his Frodo' to pay so much attention to 'the Pip Squeak'. Besides, Merry did try to warn Frodo. LOL

Thanks for reading and for starting Wee_hobbits too! I love your new site!

Wonderful! I just love these one-shots you write. Pip always manage to charm everyone and Merry and Frodo do their best to keep up with him. :D It was very enjoyable to see that Pippin actually used that purse too.

Author Reply: I could just see Pippin storing things in that purse as a small child and all the while Frodo seeing it and being amused by it all. Seems this time Merry was the only one who knew what was going to happen in the end. Thanks for reviewing and I plan to stop over after work and read the new chapter of "Crickhollow". I am loving that one!

GW, I love you! You just reach inside my brain and find just the thing that will make me laugh uproariously, and sniffle sentimentally all at the same time! I have no idea how you do that, but really--it's wonderful!

Merry snickers at me. “You’ll see,” he says. “The Pip Squeak always gets his way.”

“Why do you call him that?” I ask in amusement.

“Because he squeaks when he talks. Because he’s little. Because he runs through the smial yelling pip, pip, pip ‘cause that’s what he thinks his name is,” Merry offers. “He can’t say Peregrin and so he just says Pip. Ask him his name. He’ll tell you. He can’t talk very well but he chatters his own nonsense constantly.”

I smile at the child who is struggling with the drawstring of my coin purse and muttering to himself. I say, in that sappy voice that folks use when speaking to tiny children, “What’s your name jingle bells?”

He continues to stare at the coin purse but he says, “Pip-pip-pip-in squee.”

Merry snickers.

“You almost have him calling himself Pip Squeak,” I say trying to look disapprovingly at Merry. It is very hard to do this while Merry is looking so proud of himself.

“It’s better than jingle bells,” Merry says.

Of all the stories on how Pippin got his nickname, *this* has got to be both the funniest and the most logical!

And the part at the end? Aaawww...*sigh*

And I'll bet Merry has both wives giggling and sniffling before he's through with the telling...

Author Reply: Now, I finally know where these stories come from! Inside Dreamflower's brain! I knew I was getting them somewhere but had no idea where exactly. LOL So glad you liked it and you do say such sweet things!

I am so glad that you enjoyed my take on how Pippin got his name. Believe me, it wasn't easy to come up with a new verison of that one as so many folks have done it brilliantly before. I think nicknames just happen. Most of the ones I have ever had have been the result of my actions rather than planning or a teasing remark of some sort. I decided to let Pippin provide the start of it and Merry to grab onto it and make it stick. I always like them as a team effort anyway so this fits for me.

In my last couple of fictions I have let Frodo and Pippin tell stories so I decided that Merry needed a story to tell also. I am sure you are right and that he did a wonderful job with this one and then maybe he moved on to "Jingle Bells" and completely ruined Pippin's dignity!

Of all your stories here, I think this one might the most enjoyable yet. It was pure delight from start to finish, and I just adore the way Merry gets back at Pippin in the end. So much fun!

Author Reply: Why thank you so much. I can't help it. I enjoy the pre-quest writing more than the rest for some reason. I am glad that you enjoyed it. I think part of the reason I like to write them as children is because Frodo was still happy then. Thank you for reviewing!

Tsk tsk...Pippin's a little theif! He's awfully cute, though.

The ending made me go "awww.....". He really did like that coin purse, didn't he?!

Author Reply: Merry was right about Pip being a bit of a thief at that point but I do believe he out-grew it. LOL
He did want the coin purse, didn't he? Glad you enjoyed this one and thank you for reviewing it!

Again, you shine!!! This is wonderful, marvelous and hilarious all rolled together!!

"He clutches it to his cheek and rubs the suede against his face and smiles, tears drying on his chubby cheeks. “Tank yoo,” he says in a squeaky little voice. He then gives me a warning look and says, “Mine.” Just to let me know that I won’t be getting it back and then proceeds put the drawstring into his mouth and suck on it. I grimace as I watch him slobber on the expensive, hand-tooled material."

"I can’t exactly recall when the coin purse actually became a coin purse again but at some point Pippin began to use it properly and finally stopped chewing on it."

Bravo! Bravo!! Bravisimo!!!

Author Reply: I am glad that you enjoyed it. I was in the mood to write a bit of 'little hobbits' and this one came to me. This time I let Pip get the better of both older cousins. That last bit didn't come to me until I'd reached the end and thought I was through then it occured to me, 'What if Pippin not only kept the coin purse, but actually continued to use it when he was all grown up?' It was fun to think about the various things that he might have put into it as a child. Thanks so much for the lovely review. I am looking forward to your next story.

His little hands reaching toward me as he kicks his feet in an effort to escape Esmeralda’s hold. This one is going to be a great deal of trouble once he gains some size. None of us will be safe after that.

“Tank yoo,” he says in a squeaky little voice. He then gives me a warning look and says, “Mine.” Just to let me know that I won’t be getting it back

Oh GW, you have outdone yourself with this one! This is one of your best yet. I'm just grinning all over my face. Mine!

:D

Author Reply: I love it when people grin like that! So glad you enjoyed it. I do believe that poor Frodo learned what Merry already knew the hard way. Thanks for reading and for grinning all over your face!
