Trust a Brandybuck and a Took!  by Grey Wonderer 618 Review(s)

That is probably the best "ending" I've read to their lives in some time. It was sad but you kept most of it away by making Merry and Pippin their usualy selves. I really enjoyed it, thank you for the story!

Author Reply: I did hope to keep it from being too very sad. I don't like to write sad stories and so I never expected to write a death fiction but with this one I tried to stay away from the angst and dwell on the fact that they were together and happy. Thanks so much for reveiwing!

I'm crying.

It was happy, sad, beautiful and perfect as are all your stories . . . well, baring the sad part, many of your stories, GW, aren't sad at all, but this one added that to the mix and it worked so very well.

MEWD several times over!

Author Reply: Awww, now I didn't mean for anyone to cry. Sorry about that. Seriously, I wondered if anyone would take this for a serious attempt since I *did* skip most of the angst. I'm very glad you enjoyed it. It is less light-hearted than my usual stuff. I don't even know why I wrote this one. It just came to me and the next thing I knew I was typing away. Thanks for reviewing!

“Race you to Over-heaven,” Pippin grinned and out of the window they went.

Wonderful story, GW!

And it doesn't need a warning. If death is like that, there is no need to be afraid :)

I loved that bit about the waistcoat!

Author Reply: I never could read many of the death fics because I so hated to think of Merry and Pippin gone from Middle earth and so when I got this idea I decided to write my own version of events. So glad you liked it! And I could hear Merry complaining about that waistcoat. hehehe

My friend, ONLY YOU could get such a giggle out of this subject! Thanks so much! Oh, I love it! And I'm so glad they could let Arwen know NOT to dress Merry in that waistcoat! Heh!

Author Reply: See, this is really as close to angst as I can get. As you can see, I didn't let them do too much grieving here. I'm so glad that you liked it. Thank you for reviewing.

I loved this, GW. It was perfect for the week I just had. It was reassuring to see the two hobbits looking at death as the next great adventure to go on.

Pippin's grief at the beginning was believable, and the whole thing with him thinking Merry was a dream was so right.:)

The bit with the waistcoat was priceless. I had to laugh a little when Arwen told Aragorn that she just knew Merry hated that particular waistcoat.

Something tells me that the presence of Merry and Pippin will be felt in Minas Tirith for a long time.

Author Reply: Thank you, Garnet. I do hope the coming week is better for you. You deserve a smile or two.

If you'll notice I didn't write too much of the grief because I just don't really do angst well.

I did think it might be amusing if Merry were concerned about what he was to wear after death. I'm glad that you enjoyed the issue of the waistcoat.

I do like to think that they were remembered in Minas Tirith and that even at times, some folks did feel them close at hand. Thank you for reading!

Laughing and crying at the same time is a messy business GW!

Author Reply: Sorry to have made you messy. LOL
I'm glad it made you laugh and thanks so much for reading. This is not what I normally write so it was nice to see that folks would give me the benefit of the doubt and read anyway.

Absolutely one of the neatest stories covering this subject I have ever read, GW! I agree, you could *never* write a miserable death story! Loved it, and so *very* "Merry and Pippin"!!!
Cathleen

Author Reply: Why, thank you! I wasn't sure how folks would take it since it really doesn't have that angst that a fiction involving death normally would. (As we both know, I can't write that sort of thing.) I leave the angst to others who do it so wonderfully. I'm pleased that you enjoyed it and thank you for the review!

And now *I'm* nearly speechless. *sigh* This was just beautiful, lovely, brilliantly done. I'm a firm believer in that, with Merry and Pippin, one followed closely after the other, and you wrote about it wonderfully! And I love the idea that Merry waited for his Pippin. :-)

Loved the story! Both hobbits were very much in character, and *very* hobbity. MEWD!

Author Reply: I'm very glad that you liked it. It's not my usual subject-matter. When the idea came to me I was surprised to even be thinking of writing about that time in their lives. I like to think that Merry and Pippin were just as always at no matter what age and so to me, this is how I would have liked them to go on. Thanks for your review and for reading!

Lovely, lovely! I liked this very much. :)

This is a bit of hobbit lore that is close to my heart--though I haven't actually got to it yet in my own story. I don't often get to see other versions of how it might play out, but I always enjoy the insights when I do. Merry and Pippin are wonderfully sweet and winsome here, just as if they were saying, 'You see? It's not so bad or boring to be old and dying--look how charming it is!'

And indeed, in your hands, it is!

Author Reply: Thank you so much for that lovely review. I've always said that I would never write about the death of Merry or Pippin but this idea just came to me and I realized that I had to write this one. As you know by now I just can't write angst so I did think that this subject was out of my area completely. Then I just decided to write it as I would like to think it happened. I very pleased that you enjoyed it.
