Time's Turnings  by daw the minstrel 23 Review(s)
lwarrenReviewed Chapter: 4 on 1/20/2005
Now this little jewel of a chapter had a bit of everything:

Thranduil seriously considering a rage: Educ can be thankful that Thranduil just had the guard escort him out, rather than evicting him himself like he might have wanted to. Those rumors are suddenly very serious, and Eilian to the rescue *sounds the trumpets*!!

Thranduil seriously considering having his head examined: I had to snicker when Thranduil looks at Ithilden and says "Did I just make a big mistake?" LOL I can just see him, especially after Eilian and his laughing, rubbing his hands together in delight, way of accepting the assignment. I'd pause for a moment, too. :-) So someone in the Eastern Patrol will accompany Eilian and Maltanaur (YAY, Maltanaur is entering the story!) to see King Bram. Gee, I wonder who it might possibly be?????? Then again, probably following the wrong trail...been known to happen. ;-)

Ithilden in stocking feet contemplating the mental workings of the male elf adolescent, i.e. Sinnarn - who of course is hot to become a WARRIOR and thus, one of the EX-students of that wicked, cruel tutor who obviously knows that the only way to keep an intelligent, hyperactive (hmmmm...not elfling anymore...must think of new term...elf-ado..naaah, teenelf...yuck...oh well) elf "kid" busy is to pile the work on....lol. Yes, I just love those repetitive arguments...Ithilden's response was priceless...are we going to have that conversation AGAIN?

Ithilden's adventure into the world of risk: What a great story...and the poor guy is beset by a great many emotions all at once: jealousy over the girl, envy over Anin's becoming a novice before, anger at his parents for not understanding, incredulous amazement at his escapade in the tree, and wanting to hide somewhere and just cry his eyes out! I agree with Alfirin, he needed someone there to appreciate him...Had to sniff some at the fate of his two friends....very sad.

Ithilden's adventure into the world of whoopee: The ending was just perfect, daw...after revealing that reckless venture, we see the serious elf getting down to some serious (tho' joyful..I loved that!) foolin' around with his appreciative wife! Wonderful, really good stuff, daw!

Author Reply: Thranduil really is lucky that he has a kid like Eilian who would do well at this kind of thing because Thranduil sure wouldn't be making nice with the men very well. And you know, I think if one son of the king and his keeper make a good envoy to Dale, then two of each might be twice as good!

Ithilden is being very patient with Sinnarn, I think. He's firm. The kid has to have lessons (I think of Sinnarn as smart like his father)and he should be learning self control, but in the meantime, if he does what he's supposed to, he can be mad. I think dealing with Legolas softened Ithilden up a little.

Ithilden really was in turmoil at this age, poor thing. I don't think he drew on a support system of friends as well as his younger brothers did. I really felt for him. I'm so glad he had Alfirin now.

How refreshing to see Ithilden being so uncharacteristically reckless, but I suppose youth gives him ample excuse to do that, especially if there is an ellyth to impress. Somehow I never pictured Ithilden being interested in anyone until he met Alfirin - shows how much of an imagination I have. And that trick with the sled - an elvish version of the skateboard, perhaps? A picture of the elves in those godawful baggy skateboard shorts actually came to my mind as I was reading that part LOL!

And Eilian is off to Dale. That should be interesting. I wonder whether everyone in Dale will be his friend by the end of his visit, as Alfirin says.

And what's this thing about those rumours? Your excellent story weaving is at work again, I see.

Author Reply: I think Ithilden had trouble making friends, poor thing. He's serious and intense, and he's the king's son. But I expect he noticed a pretty maid or two in the 600 years before he married Alfirin.

I picture Dale as being a pretty place. I think it's the idea of the "merry bells" of Dale. We'll see how Eilian does there.

I can't wait to see Eilian visiting Dale - his enthusiasm is contagious. I also liked seeing a young Ithilden, jealous and making a bad decision. I would imagine he doesn't make the same mistake twice and learns from his mistakes, but nonetheless I am curious to see his parents' reaction to this type of behavior. I would imagine he took a much different parenting technique than Eilian or Legolas!

Author Reply: I'm looking forward to seeing Eilian in Dale too! Unfortunately he has work to do there, but maybe his guards can have a good time. I would think that Ithilden might be as infuriating for Thranduil as the younger two ever were, but I'll bet you're right that Thranduil doesn't have to tell him things twice. He'd berate himself far more than his parents ever would. He should listen to his mother. Of course, that's what I feel about my son too.
