A Matter of Honor  by meckinock 23 Review(s)

Oh dear. Now you've got me really nervous. What in the world did Aragorn figure out about his father? I'd like to think that he's been through enough... I just want to pet his little ranger head and say everything will be okay, sweetie. But uh... I'm guessing that won't happen? I hope you won't make us wait too long to see what in the world is going on =)

Author Reply: Hi, Audra,

Hey, Aragorn got a little bit of TLC from Elrond this chapter, did that count? Unfortunately, he was forced (in his mind) to reject the comfort and understanding Elrond was offering him. So you may pet his ranger head, if you like :-)

Oh yeah! Because yesterday was a holiday and you weren't on line, I was hoping you were about to update. I'll come back and review when I don't have to get ready for work RIGHT NOW.

Author Reply: I'm pretty predictable, aren't I?

Oh my! Bigamy? Secret sons? Has Aragorn just discovered himself to be the illegitimate product of a bigamous relationship? Therefore not the heir of Isildur, not the Dunadan, not the once and future king and potential beloved of the Evenstar - now accepted as such by his foster father? While, of course, still shaky from his near-terminal illness and too woozy to realise the unlikelihood of said disaster? Since elves know Everything and would certainly have sussed that Arathorn was leading a double life! Or is Aragorn's sudden rather stiff formality with Elrond because he suspects that he did know and is being devious? H'mm. Or just Aragorn being unworthy and shocked and feeling like hiding at the bottom of the midden.

What a delightful prospect for lurking around and digging in the deepest pits of human ignominy. Or Bree.

I just love the attic. Even perfect, elegant Rivendell has to have somewhere to store the debris of ages - and what more likely than that Estel would have found himself drawn to his natural environment for a bit of dusty lurking. The description of Erestor as the sole person able to lay his hands instantly on long-disregarded treasures is delightful - precision seems to be such a part of his make-up. And I can just picture Rivendell thrown into total disarray because he has gone off to visit Mithlond or somewhere and nobody knows where to find the best silverware.

Dudo is still a joy - such a curious little hobbit. He's supposed to make his home with the Bolgers, is he? Provided Aragorn doesn't waylay him on route and make use of him for another purpose, that is. I love the reasons why Frodo can't take him on. Nothing to do with a shiny band of gold. It would be interesting to see what Dudo made of the Troubles - I imagine one who had survived the pleasures of Bree would be quite good at the necessary ducking and diving, wheeling and dealing. And lying. He'd be good at that in need, too.

Great chapter - I look forward to more confusion, mud, embarrassment and mud. Poor Aragorn will deserve that throne when he gets it!

Author Reply: No, yes, no, yes.

"Deepest pit of human ignominy" - I love it.

It's weird when characters just jump out at you. I never in my life intended to write Erestor.

Clever Bodkin - I gave Dudo to the Bolgers for a reason :-)
