Elf, Interrupted: Book Two: Glorfindel's Quest  by Fiondil 16 Review(s)
RhyselleReviewed Chapter: 59 on 5/24/2009
I had been wondering about who would be the ones to come from Lorien to assist Finrod and Glorfindel in organizing the security for Arafinwe's trip to Tol Eressea, but I wasn't expecting to meet Edrahil and Eregil (tricksy fellow he! *has a great mental image of Laurendil weeping over a bowl full of peeled onions*).

No wonder that Finrod reacted the way he did, particularly with Edrahil's appearance. I do like Edrahil very much--his statement about not letting the Feanoreans turn him into an oathbreaker was perfect--and I liked his little twist of humor in there too... it was just what Finrod needed.

And Mithlas! So good that his mother and sister are recovering enough to kick him out of Lorien. *grin*

Thinking about them made me think of how going to Mandos is not necessarily a BAD thing, but it is certainly easier for those dealing with them to treat a damaged living elf than to have to deal with all of the ramifications of being reborn.

Well done (as always!) and it was so lovely to read this before going to church to give a talk about Memorial Day. Please thank your muse for me!

Author Reply: Hi Rhyselle. I know a lot of people were wondering who Irmo would send. I found it amusing how many were hoping Celepharn would be one of them, though I'm not sure why they all wanted him to be there. I didn't think he was that popular a character in spite of his attitude change. Anyway, I wasn't sure who else would be there until almost the last minute myself.

Dealing with damaged living elves is probably easier than dealing with the Reborn, since, at least in the beginning, their actions can sometimes be unpredicatble as they try to reclaim their lost lives. Still, they are a bit more fun to write about. *grin*

Glad you enjoyed this chapter, Rhyselle, and I hope your talk went well. My Muse says 'You're welcome'. *grin*

Yep! I don't think I would be too fond of surprises after the one Maeglin pulled on Gondolin either!
I was wondering if any of Finrod's companions had been released and now we know.
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: Yes, now we know and now we know why Glorfindel isn't too fond of surprises as well.

Hi Fiondil. Thanks for another chapter with some food for thought. I am reminded again that the Valar do live up to their promises, but not when and how one might expect.

I recall that Finrod once asked Irmo if the companions that died with him had been released from Mandos.

"Most have," Irmo said, "but you must not seek them out. Let them come to you." "Why?" Finrod asked.

"Each of them took oath to you, didn’t they?" Finrod nodded. "Their oaths will lead them to you when the time is right for them to do so. Until then, it is best not to intrude into their lives."

So now we know Irmo decided this was the right time, and still it is very difficult meeting for Finrod to endure, at first.

Glorfindel's retort to Sador's question shows that he (Glorfindel) is not always being difficult for no reason. Though Sador's experience could be said to be just as horrific as Glorfindel's, all react in different ways to the things that happen to them. Glorfindel had his entire world torn from him hour by hour, and I can understand his dislike of surprises. They present him with situations in which he has no control, and after Gondolin, I'd say that's understandable.

Still looking forward to the end of the preparation for and beginning of the Progress and wondering what other surprises are in store!

Joanne

Author Reply: Hi Joanne. I'm glad you remembered that conversation between Finrod and Irmo. And as you say, the Valar always keep their promises, just not in the way most of us would expect.

Glorfindel hates not being in control (can you tell? *grin*) and surprises to him are a manifestation of that, since he has no control over the surprise. Of course, he's not above surprising others, but that's the way it is. We're all full of contradictions and Glorfindel is no different.

One more chapter dealing with preparations and then they will be ready to leave for Tol Eressëa.

It seems that Glorfindel’s distaste for surprises (when it is not he who surprises somebody else, that is) is rubbing off on Finrod. Not that these four surprises were _bad_ surprises, just that two of the surprises were, well, surprising. To Finrod, at least. :-)

It is obvious that Mithlas’ mother is well on the way to recovery since she sent Mithlas off with the declaration that he was getting underfoot. And he might well have been hovering in his anxiety over her fading. Which would no doubt prevent her from having proper girl talks with the other ellyth in Lórien.

Heh – is it smart putting all those Reborn in rooms so close together? It is hard enough to predict what they are going to do with only one or two, and that problem only seems to increase with numbers. But I notet that it was _Sador_ who evidently arranged for the rooms. So if there are any raids on the kitchens – or other events of a similar nature – he will likely be up to his neck in whatever-it-is. ;-)

Author Reply: I think the last thing Finrod was expecting was to see people out of his past that way. I think he probably figured the Reborn he knew about would show up so it wouldn't have been a surprise for him. Evidently, Irmo had other plans. *grin*

And I suspect you are correct about Mithlas' mother. She probably couldn't take him hovering over her in his anxiety and was glad for the excuse to get rid of him for a while. I'm sure the separation will do them all a world of good.

Well, Sador being Sador.... you just never know. *grin*

Thanks for reading and reviewing, Sunny. I really appreciate it.

Yikes !!! is about all I can say. Never a dull moment, even when it's not our 'heroes' who have caused the upset...

Author Reply: Yes, never a dull moment. *grin* I think our 'heroes' attract trouble even when they're not looking for it. That seems to be in their character, which is why most of them ended up dead. *grin*

Ah, glad that Laurendil and Manwen are coming, too - really would have missed them. And they are going to be parents? YAY!

Ha, I kept wondering if one or two of the Reborn might have belonged to Finrod's companions who died with him, and I was right! :) Though Finrod obviously didn't expect it. Poor ellon, that was quite a shock for them, but I am sure he will be happy to have another one with him whom he can trust implicitly. And I remember the story about Eregil *grin* Guess he will fit in well with the other troublemakers ;)

Do I need to mention that I am glad Mithlas is with them, too, and that his mother and sister are getting better - well enough, in fact, to throw him out, as Finrod put it? And Celepharn is with them, too! Good. Now only Gilvagor and Haldir are missing, which hopefully will wait on Tol Eressëa. Maybe even with more of the ones who went with Finrod and Beren? And I hope there will be a few of the other Amaneldi warriors we got to know at the Tournament. I love to have everyone together :)

Very nice chapter, Fiondil!

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Yes, Gilvagor and Haldir are waiting for them on Tol Eressëa. They are in fact coordinating things from that end. Who else shows up remains to be seen. Actually, I'll have to go back to the Tournament to refresh my memory as to who competed to see if they happen to be available for the Progress. *grin*

I was rather surprised the number of people reviewing the last chapter asking for Celepharn as one of the Reborn, so I was happy enough to include him in the party. I think he will play a central role in the Progress but I'm not entirely sure. We'll just have to wait and see.

Glad you liked the chapter. Thanks for reviewing. There will be one more "Tirion" chapter before they finally set off for Tol Eressëa.
