Holding Back the Flood  by shirebound 17 Review(s)

What a charming and delightful lighthearted chapter. It's good to see them all enjoying the company of each other and having some joyful moments before leaving on such a terrible and difficult journey.

I love the way you portray Aragorn and Arwen together.

Author Reply: Thank you very much. Everyone deserves a joyful evening, including a certain Elf-princess and her noble Ranger. Romantic scenes aren't my strong suit, so it's wonderful to hear that they're coming across well. :)

Well, after reading about the feast, I'm very hungry. :) It's lovely to see Arwen take a bigger role and I enjoy the banter between Gimli and Legolas so much. And awww, Frodo and Sam napping together! So cute!! :D

Thank you for another wonderful chapter! I feel quite certain that this all happened, but the Professor forgot to include it in the book.

Author Reply: Awwww, thank you! What a wonderful thing to say. And thank goodness for fanfic, or Arwen would never get to do anything but sit around and sew banners.

I was going to have Sam back in his own room by now, but... where's the fun in that? :)

“It’s all right, Mr. Merry,” Sam said confidently. “I think they were doing this in the cave, too. They’re not really angry, they’re just… well, that’s how they talk to each other sometimes.”

LOL!!! That's it, exactly! Clever Sam!

Great chapter!
I liked Arwen's arrangements for the feast, the candle ceremony and Elrond's speech, especially his words to the two startled Elven smiths. They had a very important task to do.

Author Reply: Sam's confidence in his friends is unshakeable! It's been fun bringing him, Legolas, and Gimli together.

Thank you very much, Andrea. I kept adding little details, trying to imagine how this evening might have gone.

What a lovely feast! You described it all so well, it made me feel as though I was there!

One of the things I like best about a Shirebound fic is the way that the love between the characters shines through-- and it does so here in abundance, from Merry and Pippin's gentle waking of Frodo and Sam to the mock argument between Legolas and Gimli, all the way to Bilbo's secretive appreciation of Arwen and Aragorn's romance...

*happy contented smile*

The only bad thing is that I sense it's winding down, and I don't want it to end...

Author Reply: Thank you so much... I don't want it to end, either! It's such a strange feeling to be wrapping up a story, especially one that I've been writing for nearly a year.

Yay for love and hobbityness! LOL, I'm not sure how 'mock' that argument is, but don't try to convince dear Sam that it's anything but the same gentle teasing that hobbits enjoy so much.

Oh, lovely feast! Everybody had a good time and plenty to eat, 'rained drink and snowed food'!
Liked Arwen and Elrond's speeches, as Merry said just long enough.
Loved Gimli and Legolas spat! Those two will be 'discussing' all the way to Valinor and beyond!
Sorry to see this coming to an end.
What's next?

I love that notion. What an unlikely and wonderful friendship. It's been fun exploring where and how it might have begun.

I have no idea what's next! I'm certainly open to ideas. :)

A most propitious chapter, this! And may they all continue to rejoice! Wish I could have been there, too.

Author Reply: Indeed, even as they give thanks for the present, they look to the future. At least we can attend these joyous events in our imaginations. :)

What a fun chapter, all light and happiness and everyone together. I enjoyed Gimli and Legolas' arguing, and this line made me smiled: “Long enough to satisfy, but short enough so the food doesn’t get cold.” Hear, hear! I hate long speeches before dinners! And of course, the moments between Arwen and Aragorn, especially when he took her hand under the table, were perfect.

Nice way to start the day, reading this!

Author Reply: Everyone certainly deserves a carefree evening. I'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter, especially the Arwen and Aragorn part! :)
