Oh--you have caught this so perfectly! Yes!

Author Reply: Thank you, Larner! I'm glad you liked this!

What better birthday present could Aragorn have asked than the return of Gandalf, and at such a crucial and desperate time too. In a few words, you've shown that beautifully.

Author Reply: Thanks, Estelcontar! I'm glad you liked this little short thing... definitely was a timely gift, in many ways, wasn't it?

I think that it's a wonderful trivia, which I have always loved, that this joyful meeting happened on Aragorn's birthday. I do not think he could have had a better birthday present than the return of such dear a friend and mentor.

Thank you so much for writing this.

Author Reply: Thank you, Vilwarin! I'm glad you liked this, and yes, it is a nice bit of trivia, isn't it? (Next time I watch that scene in the movies, I'll no doubt start humming "Happy Birthday to You"...) I agree in that it had to have been one of the best gifts ever for Aragorn. Thanks again for the review!

I don't think Aragorn, in this time and place, could have had a better birthday present than this.
Very well shown.

Author Reply: Thank you, inzilbeth! I'm glad you liked this... yes, it definitely lifted that birthday up above the run-of-the-mill ones, didn't it? Not many of us get a dearly departed friend back to life as a present! Thanks again for the review!

Very beautifully written. I like the mystery of what is going on until the end. At first, I relly wasn't sure who it was about. I really love that you wrote about this moment. As I said before, it's one of my very favorite moments in LOTR, hands down. So glad you wrote this, and you did an amazing job of it too.

Author Reply: Thank you, Roisin! I'm glad you liked this, and glad you found it a bit of a riddle until the end. I'm also glad I captured one of your favorite moments... it's definitely one of the joyful moments during a time when very little was going right. Thanks for the review!

What a wonderful birthday indeed! This is beautifully written.

Author Reply: Thank you, Shirebound. I hadn't realized until I saw the notice on tORN that they met Gandalf on Aragorn's birthday. Probably one of the best presents he ever received. :) Glad you liked it, and thanks for the review!

This was just beautiful. I love the glimpse of foresight and the words Aragorn would later use to Frodo.

Author Reply: Thank you, Linda! I'm glad you liked this. You touched on my favorite part, actually, the words Aragorn later used. Not to steal anything away from Aragorn's eloquence but I thought it might be interesting to think that those words might have been part of the pledge the Dunedain use when they join the Grey Company and swear fealty to their Chieftain. Those are the kind of details Tolkien left unsaid, and that I love to speculate about. Thanks for the review!

That was so sweet! I loved how Halbarad's perception of Aragorn changed completely once he had looked into his eyes. His first impression of his new chieftain made me smile. ;-)

Almut

Author Reply: Thank you, Almut! I'm glad you liked this. I imagine Aragorn probably made a pretty good first impression wherever he went. Except maybe to Breelanders and suspicious hobbits. ;)

A wonderful glimpse into this part of Aragorn's life. Being only a little older than he in this piece, I can only imagine his insecurity standing there at the entrance to a new life among people he doesn't know. He is probably very much aware of what everyone expects of him - can he fulfill it at the age of 20?

Halbarad was great and imo very in character for a man coming from a people that is focused on mere survival but still has retained the perceptiveness and wisdom of their fathers. Dour-handed ranger indeed. I especially loved him showing emption once he realises what this man may become. Very well done.

Author Reply: Thank you, Vilwarin! I agree with you on that... he probably did have a lot of poise but you still have to think there were insecurities as well. This was a big change he was facing, and he was largely untested at this point. I'm glad you liked this, and liked my take on how Halbarad may have acted and felt.

Raksha The DemonReviewed Chapter: 1 on 2/24/2009
A lovely look at Halbarad's first acquaintance with his long-lost lord. Being Dunedain, he can see the king in the gangling shaggy-haired boy. This must have been when teenaged Aragorn rode out first with Elladan and Elrohir, right, with Aragorn about 16, before his meeting with Arwen?

Author Reply: Thanks, Raksha! Glad you liked this. Aragorn was actually in his early 20s here, since he knew his true name. I always pictured Aragorn not as a fully developed man when he came to the Dunedain... strong and capable, yes, and honed some from time in the Wild, and that sort of 20-going-on-150 innate wisdom and poise in his eyes, but still with quite a bit of youth to his frame, hence the gangly detail. I think of men I've known at 20, especially tall ones, and it can be a bit longer before they reach the full musculature (and sometimes even height) of manhood. I think a Numenorean like Aragorn might be even a bit slower to develop physically than a "regular" man. He does, after all, have centuries to go yet. ;) Thanks again!
