Poor hobbits!
And now, is Bill the pony one of the Ring Bearers? Does this mean that later, Bill will get to go into the West too? (plot bunny or crazy rantings, you decide.) Still, I can just imagine Sam turning up and being met by Bill who takes me to Frodo. : )
Exciting chapter. I hope Sam is feeling better soon.

Author Reply: What an adorable idea about Bill! *grins* May our plot bunnies and crazy rantings go ever on and on.

I really enjoyed seeing the company welcomed so gently and warmly to Rivendell... I can't imagine their welcome would have been any different at all, since it was known to be a place of such peace and healing. A really beautiful last paragraph, that was.

And of course, I really enjoyed seeing everyone's fear and concern for Frodo, and Glorfindel's observation that the knife hilt seems to have lost its aura of evil. Honestly, I'm so looking forward to Glorfindel in this story!

I am absolutely clueless as to what's going to happen next... this is NOT a predictable story, and it seems almost anything could happen. It's keeping me on pins and needles!!!

Author Reply: I'm so pleased that this isn't predictable, since I always fear writing the same story over and over.

I had no idea Glorfindel would be such a major character! My original notes barely mention him. It's amazing how these tales take on a life of their own. Thank you SO much for reading, and I can't wait to start work on chapter 4 over Thanksgiving. :)

And so the Ring and whatever is inside Aragorn have entered the Valley of Imladris. Glorfindel is right to wonder about that shard. I wonder if Sam will be instrumental in solving this particular enigma, one that none yet know exist. Looking forward to the next installment, Shirebound.

Author Reply: Thank you, Fiondil. It's such a challenge -- and a joy -- to imagine all the "what if's" in the Professor's multi-layered world.

Poor Sam, getting sick! And little wonder he started thinking it all a dream; he had to have been completely exhausted. This was a nice gentle chapter, reminding me that their entry into Rivendell wasn't frantic like you'd think it would be but rather a careful, gentle affair. You captured that mood perfectly.

Author Reply: Thank you. It's interesting that the Professor wrote that Frodo was brought "slowly" to Rivendell. It gives us a chance to imagine many different scenarios.

I never get tired of expansions on this part of the story! You show the grief and weariness of Frodo's friends so very well!

Those last three paragraphs, from Sam's POV:

It didn't take long for Glorfindel and the hobbits to catch up with Aragorn, and the Elf-lord and Ranger took turns carrying Frodo. After awhile, a group of Elves joined them, singing softly as they walked. They brought fruits, ripe and crisp on the tongue, and bread warm and sweet, and soon the hobbits’ sharpest hungers were eased. As they travelled, the air grew warmer and the sun seemed to sparkle more brilliantly through the trees.

Sam rode in a haze of weariness beyond anything he had ever felt, his head still spinning, and the thought occurred to him that perhaps they had all indeed died at the River and none of this was real. When at last the path opened up to reveal a fair valley, bathed in light and alive with the sound of fountains and birds, he wondered if he was dreaming, at least. And when he saw old Mr. Bilbo standing on the steps of a grand house, and heard his voice, he was sure of it.

The Elves' song changed, and melodies urging rest and sleep bathed the hobbits in rhythmic pulses. Sam's fingers slowly loosened their hold on Bill's reins, and gentle hands lifted him and bore him away. As he slid into a deep sleep, his last thoughts were of his master, and hopes that they would all awaken in real beds, to a homely breakfast, far from dark riders or adventures.

Those are just beautiful-- wonderfully descriptive and filled with warmth and release from fear.

Author Reply: "warmth and release from fear"... two of my favorite things, and no mistake. How wonderful that we can imagine these scenes in so many different ways.

I have been following and enjoying. But chapter three forces the story forward in such a deceptively gentle way... Great writing.

Author Reply: Oh my, thank you. What a lovely thing to say.

The arrival at the Last Homely House was lovely and gentle, but Glorfindel's observation that 'something had touched Samwise more deeply than the rest' has me worried for more than just Aragorn. I look forward to more!

Author Reply: Thank you. I'm looking forward to *writing* more!

The story so far has been fascinating! This has been a re-telling of the adventure at the Ford from some viewpoints which our good professor did not explore. I believe Aragorn with all of his potential would have made a great target for the Ringwraith's malice! I believe my favorite part of this chapter is the notion that good old Bill gets to be a Ringbearer for a short time! No doubt one who would be beyond temptation or reproach. Do go on!

Author Reply: I'm so glad you're enjoying this. Bless the Professor for giving us so many ways to explore his Tale.

Good old Bill! My first draft of this chapter included Glorfindel addressing him as 'Ring-bearer'.

Ah, safe at last, or nearly so. It seems that Glorfindel is aware that all is not well with the knife hilt, I am not sure that putting it close to the One Ring is a good idea but I expect he knows what he is doing.

The arrival at the Last Homely House was beautifully done, very soft and gentle.

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Thank you. I do love it when the hobbits finally arrive safely in Rivendell.

Glorfindel may not know *exactly* what he's doing, but he's doing his best. :)
