Elf Academy Part Deux  by Fiondil 13 Review(s)

no doubts anymore and finally clear words. Does Glorfindel know that Alex has met with Namo?
"it is to Life to whom you owe your allegiance, not Death" what a powerful and musing sentence - I like it! From the mouth of a mortal it would sound weird, yet from an elf....
I had to smile on the phrase "back of the beyond - we have an exact similar phrase in german.
One of my favourite chapters. Now Alex has to turn from his path and become Artemus again or he is a real fool.

Author Reply: Hi Lai. Well, since you always sign your reviews it doesn't matter if you sign in or not. *grin*

Anyway, you are correct, there are no more doubts. I think Glorfindel is simply stating a truth as one who has had died. We'll see how Alex/Artemus handles things from now on. He has a way to go before he can be who he is meant to be and can be of help to the Elves.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

You know, Atto, I get the feeling this visit with the elves could be the best thing possible for our 'ethir neth', even if he doesn't see it right now. I wonder what's going to happen to him - well, I know what happens in the next chapter already, of course, but I mean after that. Eagerly awaiting Friday! (And I'm STILL wondering how the heck Amroth got in the spy game! *cough* Excuse me, _intelligence_officer_. Hehe.)

Tye-melin, Atto!

Kaylee

Author Reply: Hi Kaylee. We'll see how beneficial staying with the Elves will be for Alex as the weekend progresses and we will actually learn how Amroth got into the spy business in the first place very shortly, I promise. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it. Tye-melin.

Alex had quite a harrowing experience and now he is confronted with Ambrose. Although he didn't get the answers he thought. The clues that something strange is going on are more obvious than ever, but Alex is still in denial. At the moment, I can't blame him. He first needs to get back to himself (whichever self that is). Does he even know which persona he wants to be?

And a weekend with the elves. He doesn't even know what treat that is!

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. A very harrowing experience indeed and Alex is just not ready to hear the truth yet, though he will be soon. You're right that he needs to get back to himself, whichever self that is, but it's not going to happen overnight. Hopefully spending some time with the Elves will help. Thanks for commenting. It's very much appreciated.

Well, after all, Ambrose taught him his craft, so it's only right that Amroth give him back his bug! Heh! I'm still curious as to what kind of being dwells in that tarn, and why Alex/Artemus and it are so sensitive to one another. It obviously isn't fond of those who are capable of becoming warriors for the Light.

Author Reply: Everyone is curious about what dwells in the tarn, Larner, including me. I have no more idea what lurks there than the next person. The only thing I know for sure is that waking it up is not good for anyone's health. And you're right that it's not fond of potential warrior of Light, which Alex is, though he's unaware of this yet. We'll see how it all plays out in the end. Thanks for reading and reviewing. It's very much appreciated.

Poor Alex, he's got to be so confused! But it's interesting to watch how he notices these small things, like the glow or the ancient feeling around Glorfindel. I wonder how long it will take until he finally guesses the truth, or enough that they can tell him the rest.

Uh. That sounds like whatever hides in the tarn reacted quite strongly to Alex and tried to get a hold of him. That's creepy! And his nightmare is even more creepy. Somehow I have the feeling Lord Irmo has something to do with it and sent it as a warning?

So finally these two met again! All in all, it went better than I had feared, but then, Alex isn't in any state to confront Amroth.

Wow, that was how Amroth guessed who is coming beforehand? Wouldn't have thought of the handwriting, either. They *can* be close, after all!

Why do I suspect that Zach knows it were Maiar who came to the rescue? Of course, he can't say that, not to Derek and Alex, at least not right now.

Oh, Alex gets to spend the weekend at Edhellond? Why am I a tiny bit envious? Though the end was amusing – love the way Amroth just handed him his bug back! :D

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. It won't be long before Alex learns the truth, though the manner in which he does is yet to be seen. And I suspect Zach is well aware of the fact that the 'hikers' were Maiar in disguise, but, of course, he can't say that to Alex and Derek, since they're not in the know.

And Amroth certainly has a wicked sense of humor, doesn't he? *grin*

Thanks for leaving a comment. I really appreciate it.

"'Why aren't you dead?' Alex demanded." There now, that's the kind of talking I like. Blunt and straight to the point. *grin*

Lots of interesting conversations in this chapter, and it is always heartwarming to see how much the elves care about Alex despite the danger he brings along with him. I especially liked the twins chanting over him, presumably healing in some way. I'm looking forward to seeing how his stay at Edhellond goes. The hospital scenes made my think of a (probably stupid)question, though. What happens if one of the elves is injured in some way? Do they just rest in private and rely on each other for healing? I wouldn't think that they could go to a hospital, but then again I suppose that they wouldn't really have much of a chance to get injured these days. Still, with Glorfindel doing Search and Rescue I feel like it must have happened at some point. Thousands of years without battlewounds, traveling accidents, etc. is a long time.

I know Zach doesn't really have an excuse for forgetting about the Tarn, but I still feel bad for him. Getting a scolding from an authority you honestly respect and admire is hard enough without that person being thousands of years older than you.

Author Reply: Hi Lizbeth. I'm gald you found the conversations in this chapter interesting. As for your question about Elves suffering injuries and all and going to the hospital, I really don't know the answer to that. I suspect with Elrohir and Elladan both healers and given that Elves heal faster than humans anyway, I suspect they do their best to stay out of hospitals unless they're just visitors. *grin*

I'm sure Glorfindel wasn't too hard on Zach, but I'm sure their 'little chat' wasn't very comfortable either. Zach will survive and maybe next time he'll remember what the Elves tell him about certain things.

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Hi Fiondil,
Thanks for your response. I don't often come back to follow up a review but I feel the need to clarify myself just a little. I hope that you don't mind!
I understood from the first about Ambrose 'dying'. I think that what I was trying to say was Amroth was able to leave behind his Ambrose persona, albeit not totally, and move on. Artemus/Alex is beginning to need to do the same but in his case it is a bit like an emerging moth leaving behind it's old self and becoming a new creation.
This is probably as clear as mud! :)

Author Reply: Hi Harrowcat. Your explanation actually makes sense (*grin*) and I agree with you. Amroth was able to leave 'Ambrose' behind to some extent, and who knows how many times he's had to 'die' as he moved from one persona to anotherover the millennia? The same with the other Elves. Artemus/Alex is only just beginning to undergo that process, though he doesn't realize it yet. Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate it very much.

Oooooo - a weekend with the elves - what I wouldn't give for that! Though I'm not sure I'd want a brush with the Dark One in the tarn... FOUR days to banish its hold even with Glorfindel helping?!? Yikes! I do hope Alex gets the answers to many of his questions, and even some that he doesn't know he has.

And Amroth is having entirely too much fun showing up his protege. *grin*

Author Reply: Hi Lyana. Yes, whatever lurks in the tarn is not to be trifled with. We'll see what residual effects that might have on Alex as he continues to interact with the Elves. And we'll see what answers he gets as well.

You're right about Amroth. He was having too much fun tweaking his protégé. *grin*

Thanks for taking the time to comment. It's very much appreciated.

'happy sigh' lots of eleven healing and, I agree, I would not have wanted to be Zach facing his boss but I wonder who inspired him to think that that particular hike was a good idea. So 'Ambrose' died 15 years ago and it sounds like the spy/hard part of Artemus has been left behind in the tarn. All that remains is to bury him but it is not going to be easy. BTW...I am still wondering about Derek!
I have some idea of how Alex feels. I have been on retreat to places wher I have felt both welcomed and very strange at the same time. (I have never been handed a bug though!)

I am glad that you are enjoying your e.book reader. I wouldn't be without mine but I prefer real books. However, how can I carry Tolkien and related fanfic with me without it?
And I think that I am keeping pace with Lynda on Elf Interupted!

Author Reply: Hi Harrocat. Hmmm....Zach being 'inspired' to take that trail with Alex. Now there's a thought. *grin*

And 'Ambrose' faking his death 15 years ago was discussed in the first chapter between Artemus and the Deputy Director. His showing up in the photo is what brought Artemus to Wiseman in the first place. As to whether spy!Artemus has been left behind in the tarn or not remains to be seen.

I prefer real books as well, but the e-reader does make things a bit more convenient at times.

Thanks for commenting. It's much appreciated.

Something tells me that Artemus and the Spy Game will be parting company some time soon, probably with Amroth's help! I do hope Mr Farrell's accident isn't too serious.

So Artemus and Amroth have finally met and talked a little, maybe they can spend some more time together over the weekend, away from the Acadamy things will be a little more relaxed.

I don't think I would have wanted to be in Zach's shoes for his little chat with Glorfi, some thing along the lines of one of Namo's little chats, maybe not quite as scary.

Hope Caleb is doing O.K. and not having nightmares either, falling in the water must have been quite frightening for him, even with the rapid rescue.

Oh well, have to hit the sewing machine and get my pants finished for tomorrow, we get to wear jeans to work, for a donation to Bag Hunger, so I am making myself a new pair, with a purple dragon on them no less!

Up to the Midsummer Ball and the announcement, I have my ear plugs handy for Almariels 'comments'!

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Hi Lynda. I wouldn't want to be in Zach's shoes either. Glorfi can be pretty scary when he wants to be, though I'm sure he wasn't too rough on the poor kid.

We'll learn how Caleb is doing during the course of the weekend and we'll see what answers Alex gets to all his questions as well.

The purple dragon sounds pretty cool.

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I much appreciate it.
