Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 16 Review(s)

What a wonderful event! As a one-time chatelaine, I can recall getting guests and newcomers outfitted in loaner garb, and finding enough "loaner gear" (plates and such) to go around. We always had too many "small" and "extra-large" items of garb and not nearly enough "mediums" and "large"! And oh, the ubiquitous T-tunics, LOL!

You captured the atmosphere of a small event so perfectly, especially how such unsuitable venues like school gymns or church or community halls can be utterly transformed by tablecloths and candles and dim lighting! It really is amazing how easily that can happen.

I'm eager to see what happens with Wiseman's soon-to-be canton, who joins from among the mortals and who doesn't. I do hope Alex chooses to do so, as it will be so much more fun for Derek if he does. I also look forward to seeing Gareth's visit to Wiseman.

Author Reply: Hi Dreamflower. I figured readers like yourself who have been or are in the SCA would recognize a lot of it in this chapter and I'm glad you think I captured the atmosphere of a small event so well. We'll see something of the formation of the canton in Wiseman and what happens when Gareth visits. Thanks for reviewing. I greatly appreciate it.

So THAT'S where you get all those details about Medieval food and etymology and everything that keep cropping up in your stories and author's notes.

Author Reply: That's right, Sasha. It helps to have that kind of personal knowledge and experience to help write these kinds of scenes. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

What a happy and peaceful scene. Everyone enjoyed themselves and relaxed for an evening. I sense you are building to another wild ride so it was great to see a new plot point evolve. Love the comments about the clothes.

Author Reply: Hi UTfrog. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. Yes, everyone appears to have enjoyed themselves very much. We'll see how things progress from here when our intrepid heroes return to Wiseman. Thanks for commenting. It's appreciated.

What a delightfully fun feast for all! It was good to see folks who had been so uptight and tense go off their guard and relax and enjoy themselves for a change. I enjoy seeing everyone through Ron's clinical eyes. I believe the surprise was well-received by all and Finrod took it all in stride, even though he was out of his element thrown into such a situation as this.

Author Reply: Hi Ellie. It was nice to see everyone in a relaxed and enjoyable mood, especially given what some of them have had to endure lately and what may be waiting for them when the return to Wiseman. This was something they all needed in order to decompress a bit. And Finrod knows how to regroup and carry on in spite of the strangeness of the situation, so it didn't take him long to get into the spirit of things. Thanks for taking the time to read and review. It's always greatly appreciated.

A wonderful and long chapter this time. I loved the feast that was put together by the SCA group. The details that you provided in this instance were very interesting to a history buff such as myself. Eating without a fork can be difficult at first and it does need a dexterity to not drop the food on one's lap instead. I love gingerbread and lemon sauce which sounds like a good end to the meal. And I am still chuckling over the cloved lemon. What an ice breaker!

Derek is taking the lead here in deciding to join the SCA group when it gets organized in Wiseman, but I hope that Alex feels able to join at some point. I can see that he is still struggling with what happened to him in EA2 and pretending is probably not something he is going to feel comfortable with for a long time. But the social activities of the SCA would go far in integrating Alex's new persona and helping meet new friends and feeling more like he belonged. Hopefully Ron can get that across to Alex in one of their sessions.

All of the Wiseman elves seem to be on the same page for seeing how this would work. Even going so far as to let the mortals run the SCA and not try to control it for the Dagor Dagorath. In a way, the elves that are in Wiseman could set up the manufacturing of armor and weapons that could meet what is needed by the SCA members and even sell some items on the side to provide a adequate income. I don't think the Sindars and Silvans did much metal work, but if I remember the Noldor did work in metal.

Now for the looonnnnnggggg trip back to Wiseman and if you are true to your story I have a feeling that this is not going to be a quiet ride. There are still migrating animals, blizzards, and asundry events that can happen on the way home.

Have a great weekend!

Author Reply: Hi rikki. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter and all the little details. Cloved lemons are lots of fun and an innocent way to flirt with people.

I think eventually Alex will join the SCA because of Derek, but nothing is guaranteed so we'll just have to wait and see.

We know from the Silmarillion that the Sindar at least had knowledge of metal work and sword making, but I think only with the advent of the Noldor did they bother with it, especially with the war against Morgoth heating up.

And yes, it will be a looonnggg trip back to Wiseman for some. We'll see how that goes in the next chapter.

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much. Have a great weekend yourself!

This was fun! I'd love to attend such a feast myself. Interesting that Alex is afraid of losing himself due to roleplaying, but not really surprising if one thinks about it.

Author Reply: Hi Soledad. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. Yes, SCA feasts can be a lot of fun. Alex has a lot on his plate at the moment, so being involved in the SCA isn't at the top of his to-do list, but I think eventually when he feels more secure about himself and his new identity, he'll join up, if only because he'll see Derek having fun and won't want to miss out. *grin* Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.
